Break the Law, Break the Bonds
·
Published 5/22/2023Within the ancient Asian metropolis of Zanbil rises a secret world of drugs and violence, forcing streetwise detective Yulian and his maverick sidekick, Kimo, into an unpredictable adventure full of offbeat humor, complex characters, and unexpected outcomes as they risk their lives in their desperate attempt to avenger their city and break the seemingly untoppable force.

"You're going to die."
"I know."
"You won't make it out of this alley alive. There's no one around. We have you in a dead end"
The man stepped closer and pulled an object out of his jacket. He shot a look over his shoulder, looking at the other men who were behind him. They all gave him a nod, and he turned back to me.
"Where's your partner? You two are supposed to be the best."
Another step closer. "We had you under surveillance since you got off the plane. We knew you were here with that rich old man. You think we care about him? We just wanted to get both of you at once."
He was right in front of me now, holding up a small metallic device with two wires protruding from either side. I hated myself for enjoying the look of fear on his face as he looked at my hand, which was holding his gun. His eyes widened when he realized what I was doing, but it was too late. The bullet went through his head and exited out of the back, splattering blood everywhere. The device fell to the ground, and I kicked it away from me before using my foot to crush it into pieces. I pocketed the gun and picked up the bag that had been dropped when he fell. It was full of cash, which I promptly put into my own bag before leaving the alleyway.

I sat down at my table, after giving Kimo a quick nod greeting. It had been quite awhile since I had seen him last; our jobs usually kept us miles apart unless we needed each other for a job or something along those lines. He waved me over once he spotted me walking towards our usual spot, and we exchanged greetings before getting down to business. He handed me the envelope he had been holding tightly in his hands once I sat down next to him and took off my jacket - it was still hot outside, despite the autumn season starting to show its face amongst us in New York City these days.
"So?" he asked eagerly as soon as I opened it up and saw how much money was inside - more than enough for both of us for at least another month or two if we kept eating where we usually did (which we usually didn't).
"Let's do this," I replied with a smile as I collected everything together and put it safely into my own bag while Kimo took my jacket and headed over to where our waiter would be waiting for us with our usual seats ready for us (plus some extra water for Kimo due to his excessive smoking habits). After receiving our food from our waiter, Kimo returned to our table and placed some more water next to mine before sitting down again with a smile on his face that was probably even bigger than mine was right about now - not that I could see it anyway due to how covered it was by the beard that covered most of my face most days like today (and yesterday). If anyone ever told me growing a beard out would make people think you were cool, they were fucking crazy - growing one out these days only made people think you were homeless (or crazy); luckily though, there weren't many people out there who got close enough to us to notice or care about what kind of facial hair we might have today or any day in general - those kinds of people usually ended up dead somehow one way or another anyway - so we preferred not having them get close enough that they would notice something like that in the first place. As soon as we finished eating, we paid our bill and left, heading back towards my apartment building where we lived together with everyone else who worked at being 'the best' like us - although many others tried their hardest every day but never quite managed to reach our level anyway.
