Cursed Desires
·
Published 7/14/2023In a world plagued by inexplicable murders, brooding Detective Joe Green joins forces with a peculiar woman who claims to possess otherworldly powers, setting off on a perilous quest to uncover the truth behind a string of deaths connected to a malevolent, wish-granting artifact—a journey that may cost them their own lives. Can Joe unravel the enigmatic curse, catch the elusive killer, and prevent mankind from falling victim to the price of eternal desires?
Joe pulled the cigarette from his mouth, and examined the smoldering tip.
"Traced back to a single source, huh?" he mumbled to himself " This is just like that last case." He sat in silence for another moment before pulling a small notebook from his pocket. He opened it to the first page, and wrote 'Wish', with an arrow pointing to the word 'Curse'.
He was tired of cases involving some cursed object or other. The last one had been a killer that turned out to be an old mirror that granted wishes. Joe had spent days tracking it through a dozen states, barely able to keep up with all the people dropping dead and then disappearing all around him.
Someone must have seen him smoking in here; he was going to get in trouble again, if not worse. These cubicles were meant for worker drones, not detective work. He might be forced to go outside if the new commissioner didn't let up on him soon.
"May as well try my luck anyway." He said to himself, taking another long drag on his cigarette. With a flick of his wrist, he suddenly disappeared from where he sat and reappeared outside the building of his precinct. No one seemed to notice him appear out of thin air, as they always did. All of life's little annoyances had grown normal after 40 years like this.
He walked a few blocks until he found what he was really looking for; an alleyway between two buildings that was obscured by the shadows of dusk. A simple incantation later and he vanished into thin air again, appearing behind a dumpster in the alleyway beside his cubicle at work. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out another cigarette; lighting it with a flick of his hand as he pulled it from its pack.
"Damn things cost more than money these days." Joe muttered under his breath "But that's why I'm still smoking." He took another long drag on the cigarette before putting it down on the concrete next to him and pulling out his notebook again. He looked at the first page again, which now read 'Curse'.
With an exasperated shake of his head, Joe put away his notebook and continued smoking while leaning against the dumpster behind his cubicle at work. The door opened slightly behind him; someone was trying to figure out why it kept shifting around them when they opened it every morning after their shift started at 8am. As expected, they immediately spotted Joe leaning against the dumpster behind them "Hey! You're not supposed to be smoking in here!" shouted one of Joe's co-workers "What are you even doing back here? It's near quitting time!"
Joe took one last drag on his cigarette and flicked it away into the alleyway just as he vanished in a burst of light from behind the dumpster
Joe reappeared in his apartment, the familiar sight of worn-out furniture and empty takeout containers surrounding him. The air was heavy with the stench of stale smoke. He sighed, his tired eyes catching the faint glow of his phone on the coffee table. He picked it up and saw a missed call from an unknown number. A voice message. Curiosity gnawed at his mind as he pressed the play button.
"Mr. Thompson, my name is Emily Hawthorne. I believe you might be able to help me. Please, please, you must come to the Westerfield Estate. It's urgent." The urgency in her voice was palpable, and Joe couldn't help but feel a spark of intrigue.
Who was this Emily Hawthorne, and why did she seek his assistance? He had heard about the Westerfield Estate, a sprawling manor plagued by legends of ancient curses and mysterious disappearances. Joe had always been drawn to the dark and enigmatic, unable to resist the allure of the supernatural.
His thoughts swirled as he paced the room. A restless energy filled him, urging him to take action. Without hesitation, Joe grabbed his coat and hat, slipping them on with practiced ease. He knew the path he had chosen was never an easy one, but the call of adventure and the allure of the unknown were too powerful to ignore.
Arriving at the Westerfield Estate, he couldn't help but be struck by its eerie beauty. The moon cast an ethereal glow upon the mansion, highlighting its intricate architecture and crumbling façade. As Joe stepped through the wrought-iron gates, a cold breeze whispered through the trees, sending shivers down his spine.
"Mr. Thompson! You made it!" A woman's voice called out, breaking the silence. Joe turned to see Emily Hawthorne, a woman of slender frame and porcelain features. Her eyes held a hint of desperation, yet there was a strength in her gaze that caught his attention.
"Miss Hawthorne," Joe replied, his voice a low timbre that matched the haunting atmosphere. "What is it that you need my help with?"
Emily led him through the grand entrance, unveiling a hidden study filled with ancient tomes and artifacts. In the center of the room stood a delicate glass case, its contents obscured by a milky haze. She pointed towards it with a trembling hand.
"This is the source of our troubles, Mr. Thompson," she explained. "It's a cursed necklace that has plagued my family for generations. It grants immense power, but it comes at a great cost. I beg of you, help me find a way to break this curse."
Joe approached the glass case, his eyes fixated on the necklace. The curse, the power, it all seemed too familiar. Flashes of his past cases flooded his mind—one after another, each woven together by a thread of supernatural influence. The realization struck him like a bolt of lightning.
"I've seen this before," he murmured, a mix of apprehension and determination filling his voice. His gaze never wavered from the necklace. "But breaking this curse won't be easy. We must delve deep into the forbidden realms of magic and embark on a perilous journey."
Emily's face displayed a newfound hope, coupled with an underlying desperation. Together, they would dive headfirst into the unknown, unravelling the secrets that had haunted the Westerfield Estate for centuries. As they prepared for the arduous task ahead, the weight of their past cases and the darkness that loomed above them served as a constant reminder of what was at stake.
With every step they took into the abyss, Joe and Emily would expose themselves to ancient forces and shadowed realms. They would discover truths that shattered their beliefs and face adversaries beyond their wildest nightmares. Yet, in the midst of the chaos and uncertainty, a shared determination would forge an unbreakable bond between them.
It was in this bond that they found solace, for the world of curses and wishes was both a place of unimaginable danger and untapped potential. Together, Joe and Emily would brave the darkness, armed with the strength of their will and the flicker of hope in their hearts. For in the depths of despair, they would unearth the power to rewrite their own destinies and bring light to a world consumed by curses.
