Captain Darius had never been to Earth before and was surprised by how much the place looked like home. The lush green grass, the clouds of dust rising from the ground as they walked, even the smells were all familiar. He felt himself relax a little as they walked to their destination. He turned his head to Zembe and smiled, she smiled back and then returned her gaze to the path ahead.

The pair kept their heads down as they made their way through the crowd. They had been lucky that they managed to get passes for a match in the semi finals at all. The tournament was being held here for some reason on this planet with no actual ties to any of the other planets in the system or galaxy for that matter, but it was an opportunity that simply couldn’t be missed. It was also an excuse for them to have time away from their duties as defenders of Virmolus.

They had needed this break for a while now; ever since their last great victory against Lelgek, the sullen giant, who had made his attack on their planet Virmolus. Thankfully he was defeated by Darius and Zembe, but in order to defeat him they had used up most of their energy reserves. Darius had not slept well since then; his dreams were filled with images of destruction and death at Lelgek’s hands. He would wake up drenched in sweat and unable to return back to sleep again until morning broke over Virmolus.

Zembe had seen him suffer and tried her best to help him during these tough times, but her own mind was still troubled by that memory too. She just hoped that seeing another planet might help them both recover their strength and clear their minds so that they could focus on preparing themselves for an attack against Lelgek when they returned home.

Zembe pulled her eyes from Darius’ face and scanned around them in front of them . They were getting close now to where they needed to be. From what she understood there was only one match today between two contestants from Earth called Bobbie-Joe and Sammah-Raj. The winner of this match would go on to fight another contestant called Paulie-John in a winner takes all showdown tomorrow night at 9pm (Earth standard time). Captain Darius had explained this format to Zembe as they were boarding their ship earlier that morning. She rolled her eyes at his uncharacteristic giddiness while he spoke about it, but she was happy for him nonetheless. They hadn't had time together since before Lelgek attacked Virmolus, so if this meant he would be happy for a few hours, then she didn’t mind at all.

She continued scanning ahead of them, something caught her eye; there was a small group of people walking towards them about thirty or forty meters ahead. Her eyes darted back towards Captain Darius who hadn’t noticed yet; she turned back towards the group ahead of them and watched as one person detached from the group alone and began making its way closer towards them through the mass of people surrounding them at every turn on this path winding around around Central Park Lake. Zembe noted how heavy handedly the man pushed people out of his way as he approached her and Captain Darius with a dumb grin on his face that made his eyes squint closed slightly in aggression. His arms swung wildly as he pushed past people without care or concern for how far into their personal space he got with each shove off balance person he encountered on his way forward towards them, who remained standing resolutely in his path with wide open eyes staring right back at him as though frozen in fear at what was happening right before their very eyes in slow motion going on around them.

This man seemed strange indeed; maybe she should tell Captain Darius about him? She opened her mouth to speak and point at him when suddenly from behind her came a shriek from one young woman whose shrill cry cut through Zembe's ears like a knife slicing butter and left her feeling both pain from its suddenness and shock from its loud volume even after it had already stopped ringing inside her head. She bent forward clutching her ears as soon as it stopped leaving a ringing echo reverberating inside her skull making it hard for her throat muscles to form words she desperately wanted to say out loud but which would not come out because fixing what happened inside your head after a shriek is harder than you think except if you know magic like Zembe can do but she is thinking too hard about what happened so I'm going tell you instead: someone screamed really loud and it hurt Zembe's ears so bad she couldn't speak anymore because now nothing can get past my lips without sounding like an angry cat but I'm not mad I'm just trying really hard not scream again because then everyone will hear me including Captain Darius oh thank goodness because look now we're talking again so I don't need to scream ever again now if I don't want to because we're talking! We're talking!

Zembe regained her composure and looked back at the man who had caused such a commotion. He was standing just a few feet away from them now, a sly smile playing on his lips. His eyes held a strange glimmer that sent shivers down Zembe's spine. She instinctively stepped back, slightly behind Captain Darius, seeking the comfort and protection of his presence.

Captain Darius, oblivious to the chaos that had just unfolded, turned around to see what had caused the commotion. He saw the man, his smile widening even further, and raised an eyebrow in suspicion. "Can I help you?" he asked, his voice laced with authority.

The man chuckled darkly, his voice carrying a tone of amusement. "Help me?" he repeated, as if mocking the question. "Oh, Captain Darius, you have no idea who I am, do you?"

Darius tensed, his hand instinctively reaching for his sidearm. "Enlighten me," he said, his voice steady despite the growing tension in the air.

The man took a step closer, his eyes locked with Captain Darius'. "It's time for you to pay for what you've done, Captain. Or should I say, what you failed to do."

Zembe felt a surge of protectiveness towards Darius, her hand inching towards her own weapon. She knew that he had never failed in his duty, that he had saved countless lives and defended Virmolus with unparalleled bravery. But this man's words struck a nerve deep within her, fueling a fierce determination to prove him wrong.

Darius took a step forward, his face a mask of determination. "I don't know who you are or what you think I failed to do, but I assure you, you've made a grave mistake by crossing our path."

The man's laughter echoed through the crowd, drawing the attention of onlookers who had gathered to witness the altercation. "We shall see, Captain. We shall see."

Without warning, the man lunged at Captain Darius, his hands reaching for his throat. Darius quickly sidestepped, narrowly avoiding the attack. He deftly grabbed the man's wrist, twisting it in a swift motion that forced him to his knees. The crowd gasped in awe and disbelief at the display of strength and skill.

But the man was relentless. With a swift kick, he knocked Darius off balance, sending him crashing to the ground. Zembe, driven by instinct, reacted immediately. She drew her weapon and fired a warning shot into the air, creating a temporary lull in the chaos.

The man took advantage of the distraction and sprang to his feet, lunging at Zembe. She tried to dodge his attack, but his speed and agility were unmatched. He landed a blow to her side, causing her to stumble backward, her weapon slipping from her grasp.

Darius, fueled by a surge of adrenaline, fought through the pain and tackled the man to the ground. They wrestled fiercely, their grunts and groans drowned out by the gasps and murmurs of the crowd. Zembe, recovering from the blow, joined the fight, landing a well-aimed kick that sent the man sprawling across the pavement.

But even as they fought against their assailant, neither Captain Darius nor Zembe could shake the feeling that there was something more to this encounter than meets the eye. The man's words echoed in their minds, hinting at a connection to their past that they couldn't ignore.

As they momentarily gained the upper hand, the man's eyes bore into theirs with a mixture of fury and twisted satisfaction. "You may have won this round, Captain Darius," he snarled, "but the game has just begun."

With that ominous declaration, the man disappeared into the crowd, leaving behind a sense of unease in his wake. Zembe and Captain Darius looked at each other, their faces etched with determination. They knew that they had to find answers to the questions that lay ahead. The battle against Lelgek was not the end, but merely the beginning of an even greater threat that now loomed over their heads.

Together, they stood amidst the dispersing crowd, ready to face whatever challenges awaited them. Their journey was far from over, and the fate of Virmolus depended on their courage and resilience. With renewed purpose, they set off, determined to unravel the mystery that had just unveiled itself before their very eyes.
