The Dark Secrets of Orting
·
Published 3/19/2023Detective Qenevo, with her assistant Rax, desperately races against time to uncover the truth behind the mysterious murders that are terrorizing the kingdom of medieval Orting and stop the inevitable before it's too late.
Qenevo had been at this job for over a decade. She was one of the best detectives in the land, and she knew it. Her partner, Rax, had been her partner for just as long, and even though he always found himself on the wrong side of her anger, he still stuck by her side. She was his only friend. Well, besides his family.
After a day of sleuthing through the streets of Orting, Qenevo figured that they would finally be able to get home and relax. That is until she caught site of something that made her blood run cold: a piece of parchment tacked to the town bulletin board.
Qenevo's eyes grew wide as she took in the words before her. She felt a sudden surge of panic within her as she read the note aloud to Rax without thinking: "She lives where the forest meets the sea."
Rax's expression transformed from confused to frightened in an instant. "What does it mean?" he asked in a quivering voice.
"I don't know!" Qenevo replied hastily. "But we need to tell my boss immediately! This note means something!"
They both ran down the street towards their office building as quickly as they could manage. They were both out of breath by the time they arrived at their destination, but they didn't slow down as they rushed into their superior's office and collapsed onto two seats next to each other before sitting upright again.
"What is it?" Their boss asked them with concern in his voice. He was a large man with dark hair and heavy brown eyes that looked like they had seen too much in their lifetime. His name was Kardo, and he had been working alongside Qenevo and Rax for years now on solving just about every case that came through their office door.
Qenevo held out her hand towards Kardo as she spoke: "It's a letter with some riddle or clue on it." Kardo took it from her hand and began reading it aloud: "She lives where the forest meets the sea." He looked up at Qenevo with confusion written all over his face before handing the letter back to her. "I don't know what this means," Qenevo said honestly as she shook her head sadly, "but I think it has something to do with these murders."
"Murders?" Kardo questioned with a raised eyebrow as he leaned forward over his desk so that he could speak more closely with Qenevo and Rax about this new development. "What murders?" he pressed further when Qenevo didn't reply right away. Kardo was used to having his questions answered directly, but he also knew that there were some things that couldn't be answered quickly or easily, especially when facts weren't clear yet or when investigations were still underway--as seemed to be the case here today. Still, he needed answers now more than ever before if he wanted to keep Orting safe from whatever threat might be lurking around every corner--that was why he pushed Qenevo so hard in this moment even though it wasn't really his place to do so anymore. The three sat in silence for a moment while Rax shifted nervously in his seat beside Qenevo until she finally decided to speak up again: "A few days ago," she started carefully, "three bodies were left outside of town limits near the forest... All three victims were killed by being stabbed repeatedly." Kardo's eyes widened at this new information; three murders? And all killed through stabbing? It didn't seem likely that these cases were connected somehow--and yet...
Qenevo continued after taking a deep breath: "And then yesterday we got word of another murder where two bodies were left behind outside city limits between us and the sea..." She stopped talking after saying those words but continued staring at Kardo expectantly for him to say something back--anything back! But instead of speaking up again himself like she thought he might have done after hearing all of that information, Kardo simply nodded slowly and gestured for Qenevo to continue talking with an open palm gesture aimed towards herself--she seemed relieved by this reaction because it meant that either he hadn't heard anything else important yet or else (more likely), he already knew all of this and was allowing her time to collect herself before continuing on with what she was trying to say next--either way, it worked! At least for now...
As Qenevo finished telling Kardo everything important about these murders thus far (or what seemed important anyway), Rax watched silently from beside Qenevo as his own mind raced with fear about what could possibly happen next if this situation wasn't handled properly soon enough...
