The small town of Squarmarsh gathered in confusion when the news broke of Thaddeus the Third, an exiled Leprechaun, who had been granted asylum in the town. Superstitious citizens feared the outcast who had brought trouble and disaster in his wake. Amidst the to-ing and fro-ing over the arrival of the mysterious guest, young Juanita heard rumors in the market square and began to investigate. She tracked Thaddeus to a local inn, where he resided and sipped steadily from a never-empty pint of beer. Juanita asked the bartender who the strange man was. The bartender replied, “That’s Thaddeus the Third, he’s a wise, old leprechaun who offers offbeat advice and has a gift for them who bother to listen.” Intrigued by the mystery surrounding Thaddeus and more so excited by the beckoning of wisdom, Juanita regrouped in the economy of the town, eager to hear what the old, exiled leprechaun had to say.

As days slowly drift by, rumors of Thaddeus slowly spread on the wind. The local tavern was soon crowded with a mix of patrons from youngsters to old mothers, gathering to hear the wise words of Thaddeus. From the corner, Thaddeus begins to speak with a sincere, witty surrender. His words unveil insights as they flow in between conversations and in subtle pauses. His words offer hope, a different perspective and bring together judgemental minds, objecting hearts and curious beings. While the townspeople politely show acceptance of a culture different from theirs, Juanita listens to the criss-cross of discussion, occasionally joining in. As time passes, Thaddeus and Juanita connect over their shared knowledge and experiences. The locals starting noting the changing affair between the leprechaun and the young girl and recognize the power of kindness over fear that Juanita found in her newfound friend. Soon some citizens begin asking for Thaddeus' help as well. Gradually, a deep friendship builds between Juanita and Thaddeus and the young girl begins to recognize the power of the exiled one’s counsel, not only in her own life but in the life of her town.

The people of Squarmarsh have grown to both accept and appreciate Thaddeus’ presence in the town, but struggle to understand the new way of life he introduces that brings with it a slow but mounting conflict between tradition and progress. Unbeknownst to the Leprechaun and the young girl, malicious townspeople use the small tensions between old and new to craft an uprising against Thaddeus and the wisdom he brings to the people. The call for a meeting bubbles to the surface and at its peak, Thaddeus faces exile for a second time. The outcome of the meeting will decide the fate of the town, how tradition triumphs over progress, and more importantly, the end to the pure friendship of Thaddeus and Juanita.

With sinister intentions in the heart of the angry crowd, the residents of Squarmarsh finally comprehend the true battleground they are on and the clash between the local culture and foreign practice, religion and faith, and hope and despair. Juanita stands in the center, embodying the core of the conflict- she recognizes the pure intentions of the old, exiled friend and knows that destruction of the friendship she so cherishes wouldn’t end the issues of the town but further breed them. The time to settle the air arrives and a tense second engulfs the room as the resolution is left to a select few voices to be carried to the rest of the crowd. One voice calls for the acceptance of Thaddeus and the other for his exile. Finally, Juanita speaks up in the flickering silence - “The answer lies here in our beliefs. Sometimes progress hurts and sometimes progress helps. We can fight against progress, but, in the end, progress and tradition can co-exist if we are open to learning from and adapting to the changes ”. Even in the face of division, Thaddeus and young Juanita stand together as proof of their heartfelt bond and use their words to narrate the destruction of tradition over progress. All the while, Thaddeus’ words reverberate amongst the minds of the townsfolk - one must accept change in order to have harmony and gain wisdom. The decision must be made and eventually the residents of the small town marched in unison - they accept Thaddeus and his newfound lifestyle and allow the exiled leprechaun to settle peacefully in his new home, ready to reflect and evaluate the new changes he brought aboard.
