Published 11/28/2023“Are you sure this is the place?” Victor asked, leaning out the window to survey the abandoned warehouse before them.
Momo nodded. “This is where I was told to meet them.”
Victor sighed and ran a hand through his hair. He had been roped into Momo’s latest scheme once again. Ever since their first drift race together, Momo had been obsessed with finding more races and getting involved in the underground racing scene. And now, it seemed, they were on the verge of discovering something big.
“Alright,” Victor said, opening his car door. “Let’s see what this is all about.”
The two friends made their way inside the warehouse, their footsteps echoing in the empty space. As they ventured further in, they began to hear the low rumble of engines and the screech of tires.
“This way,” Momo said excitedly, leading Victor towards the source of the noise.
They emerged into a large open area where cars were lined up in a makeshift starting grid. A group of people stood nearby, watching as two drivers spun their cars around each other in a mesmerizing display of skill and control.
“Who are these guys?” Victor whispered to Momo.
“I don’t know,” she replied. “But they’re incredible.”
Victor had to admit that she was right. These drivers were on another level entirely. They moved with a grace and precision that he had never seen before, their cars dancing together as if connected by an invisible thread.
As he watched, one driver made a sudden move and sent his opponent spinning out of control. The crowd erupted into cheers and applause as he crossed the finish line in triumph.
“That’s enough for today,” a voice called out over the noise.
The crowd quickly dispersed, leaving only a handful of people behind. One man stepped forward from among them - tall and imposing with a shaved head and tattoos covering his arms.
“Who are you?” he asked, eyeing Victor and Momo suspiciously.
“I’m Momo,” she replied, stepping forward. “We were told to come here. We want to join your group.”
The man raised an eyebrow. “Is that so?”
Momo nodded eagerly. “Yes! We’re both really good drivers, I promise.”
The man considered her for a moment, then turned his attention to Victor. “And what about you?”
Victor shrugged. “I’m just here for the ride.”
The man’s lips twitched in a half-smile. “We’ll see about that. Show me what you can do.”
He gestured towards the cars, and Victor and Momo climbed inside. The engines roared to life as they pulled onto the track, and they waited for the signal to start.
As soon as it came, they were off - tires screeching and smoke billowing behind them. They drifted around corners and weaved through obstacles, their cars moving in perfect sync with each other.
When they finally came to a stop, the man approached them with a thoughtful expression on his face.
“You’re not bad,” he said grudgingly.
Momo beamed at him while Victor tried to hide his surprise.
“But if you want to join us,” the man continued, “you’ll have to prove yourselves.”
“How?” Momo asked eagerly.
“There’s a race tonight,” he explained. “If you win, you’re in.”
Victor glanced at Momo uncertainly. He had never been one for taking risks or getting into trouble, but something about this felt different. It was like fate had led them here - like this was where they were meant to be.
He looked at the man and nodded firmly. “We’ll do it.”
