Concealed Intentions, Uncharted Choices

Miranda, a young woman born and raised in the distant village of Balliston in 16th century England, could be called a rose blooming amongst thorns, for her intelligence and beauty brought new interest and life to the small town. Although she had always dreamed of more, her life in Baliston was both comfortable and secure until Robert Blackman arrived. Handsome and charismatic, Robert carried himself with a presence that was both impressive and intimidating. Miranda succumbed to it almost despite herself, drawn in by his intense charisma and engaging manner. Robert quickly convinced her to take a chance, entirely changing the course of her destiny.

The two set off for a new life in London, enticed by the prospect of adventure and the promise of riches and recognition. Gifts and accolades soon followed and Miranda basked in her new status, having been given a chance to live out her desires for ambition and society. Despite her newfound happiness, there were two she still longed for; William, the farmer from her village who had never declared love or commitment, but whom she had always felt deep affection in her heart for, and freedom from her status quo.

It was during this journey to London that Barbara, Roberts childhood tutor and friend, arrived. Although Miranda was both sure and eager to pursue a life with William, Barbara was abundantly clear in ensuring that Miranda knew that should William falter in his pursuit, then Robert was more than available to come to the rescue. Betraying a jealous anger, she threatened Miranda with the insight that not all that glitters is gold.

The midpoint of the story brings Robert, Miranda and William to the edge of a trading fair. Tensions rise quickly as it becomes evident that Robert’s feelings for Miranda differ entirely from William’s. As their conflicting conversations become progressively more heated and pronounced, Miranda struggles to decide what her future holds. With her decisions about the two men drawing her further away from each other, she finds semblance of peace when Robert invites her to accompany him to invest in the market in the town.

At the market, Miranda falls in love with one of the items - an exquisite locket rearing an unfamiliar symbol that stirs up a sense of nostalgia. Miranda is captivated by the charm of the mystery and questions the merchant curious about its history.

He explains that he had only recently obtained the locket, which seemed to be connected to a group of noble people. It carries with it a long and laborious secret involving generations of values, loyalty, friendship and the struggle for freedom. Consequently, Miranda resolves to turn over a new leaf, embracing the purpose imbued by the locket and dedicating her new life to a fight for justice.

The crisis of the story is set when Miranda begins to diligently discover the ins and outs of her newfound mission. However, Robert soon discovers her began her obscure journey and begins to use his formidable skills in manipulation and coercion to force Miranda quickly back onto the predictably safe roads of repose. Meanwhile, William is yet to give his answer and Miranda needs him to make the right decision if her newfound passion is to find absolute fruition.

Accompanied by Barbara, the trio travels through England reaping the benefits of their military experiences while they did their best to complete the secret mission they had all embarked onto. Sharing days of danger and high-speed gallops, Miranda doubts her choices and her intentions, eventually revealing her growing feelings for William over the course of the road. All discover new sides to themselves on the journey, with both Robert and William lashing out in verbal arguments and initial actions of physical violence, so much so that Barbara threatens to abandon them on a lonely roadside if the fighting continues.

This leads to the climax of the story. After an intense battle for the heart and minds of the three, Miranda finds herself having to make the ultimate decision to fulfill the secret mission she embraced or to walk away with her mixed emotions and return home.

A final confrontation ensues between the three, with Barbara finally delivering a stark speech during which Miranda fights to maintain control of her path in life. She begins to understand the validity of dreams and destinations and decides ultimately to pursue her convictions and trust her choices based on what she chooses to believe.

The story comes to a powerful conclusion when the three break across the finish line of the market and Miranda makes a stunning and unexpected choice that grants her freedom, resolution and closure - all the while prompting her newfound love, exploration and determination to challenge societal conventions and turn her dreams into tangible realities.
