"Ulla, where are you?" whispered Thera from the hallway. Ulla felt a twinge of guilt for leaving without telling her friend, but she was too excited to wait for her, and besides, it was just her and Mother at home. She knew Thera wouldn't tell anyone.

The smell wasn't bad enough to make her stomach turn, but it was bad enough that she wished she had something in her stomach to throw up if needed. Telling herself that she'd be fine and that it smelled better than leg of lamb after being roasted in the ashes, she took a deep breath and pushed open the door to the latrine.

It was dark inside, but as she walked deeper inside, her eyes adjusted. It wasn't much bigger than her bedroom, but instead of two beds next to each other, there were holes in the floor with spaces between them. One hole smelled like rotted eggs mixed with rotting animals and the other smelled like sulfur mixed with rotten fish. Ulla made her way towards the stinky one and squatted over it, hoping to get everything out of her system quickly so that she could wash herself off before Mother noticed anything smelly on her.

She relieved herself quickly, then stood up and began pinching up water from the wooden basin sitting by the wall and washing herself off with it. She had no wish to touch the water in any of the bowls sitting around the room - even if they were filled to overflowing from recent use - because according to both Mother and Father, it was where people washed themselves when they entered or left the latrine. There were wooden shovels in there too, which people used when they... well... did what they did at home or in a field or somewhere else away from this place. It was just a small part of why Ulla preferred going outside - though Mother said that wasn't safe either. But at least Ulla could see what she was doing outside - even if it meant getting shocked by stunted grasses or making a mess as she tried to go behind bushes.

Her thoughts were interrupted as someone opened the door to enter the latrine while Ulla was still washing herself off with some more water from the wooden bowl. The person took one look at Ulla standing there with only water dripping down herself, then ran back into the hallway screaming "Bjørn! Bjørn!"

"What's going on?" asked Thera from outside before entering the room. She didn't answer right away. "Oh my gods..." Ulla looked down at what had caused Thera's reaction: looking back up at them were two dead bodies covered in blood surrounding the doorway - one male and one female who looked vaguely familiar to Ulla: their heads were almost severed from their bodies and their bellies had been ripped open by something sharp enough that blood still gushed out of them almost like water flowing from a spring-well when someone pulled on its rope handle. Their arms had been torn off as well - bit not cleanly cut off as if done with an axe - but rather gnawed away by some great beast until their bones were exposed and their flesh eviscerated by whatever beast gnawed on them until death overtook it's hunger for meat. There was no blood splattered anywhere except for those two corpses; all around them was pristine white marble tiles glistening like diamonds under a full moon's light... except for where a trail of red led away out into another hallway. After seeing this horrible sight, both girls turned towards where they came in: where Ulla saw another body standing there frozen in shock while holding onto an arrow which must have pierced his throat: his eyes staring blankly ahead while he gasped his last breaths out of his now gaping wound like a fish tossed onto dry land gasping its final moments out of water after dying within its depths...

"Get away..." whispered Ulla while backing away slowly towards where they entered through.... Her words echoed throughout the windy hallways beyond as everyone else living within this house heard screams far worse than these echoing through their minds as they turned towards their homes wondering what terrible thing has happened within their walls...

Ulla and Thera must now navigate through the treacherous hallways of their home, avoiding the dangerous creature that lurks within. As they make their way towards the main exit, they stumble upon a dark secret that shakes them to their core.

"Thera, we have to get out of here," Ulla whispered, her voice trembling with fear. Thera's eyes widened with terror as she nodded in agreement. They couldn't stay in the latrine any longer, knowing that a bloodthirsty creature lurked somewhere in the darkness, waiting to strike again.

Hand in hand, the girls tiptoed out of the latrine, their footsteps barely making a sound on the marble tiles. They moved cautiously, their hearts pounding in their chests, their senses heightened in the face of impending danger. But as they crept through the winding hallways, occasionally glimpsing the trail of blood, a sense of unease settled over them.

The familiar creak of floorboards echoed through the air as they inched closer to the main exit of the house. Their hope grew with every step, as they believed that safety awaited them beyond those doors. But just as they were about to turn the final corner, a low, guttural growl reverberated through the hallway, chilling them to the core.

Ulla and Thera froze in their tracks, their breath caught in their throats. The growl grew louder, closer, and they exchanged a terrified glance. Without a moment's hesitation, they turned on their heels, abandoning the exit and heading towards a different direction. They had to find another way out, no matter the cost.

As they wandered deeper into the heart of the house, they stumbled upon a door that seemed out of place. The wood was old, cracked, and covered in a thick layer of dust. Ulla reached for the rusty doorknob, her hand trembling as she turned it slowly. The door creaked open, revealing a dimly lit room bathed in a sickly green glow.

Curiosity outweighed their fear. Ulla stepped forward cautiously, Thera right behind her. The room was filled with shelves adorned with ancient artifacts, dusty books, and strange instruments. The stagnant air hung heavy with a sense of secrecy, as if the room had borne witness to a multitude of untold stories.

Among the relics on the shelves, Ulla's eyes caught sight of a peculiar symbol etched onto a weathered scroll. It was a serpent intertwined with a sword, a symbol she had seen in her dreams. Something about it drew her in, as if it beckoned her to uncover the truth hidden within the depths of the house.

Suddenly, Thera gasped. Ulla followed her gaze to a portrait hanging on the wall. It depicted the same male and female figures they had seen earlier, their faces twisted in agony. Surrounding them were strange hooded figures, their eyes illuminated with the same sickly green glow that filled the room. Ulla's breath hitched as she recognized some of the figures from the village, their familiar faces distorted by something otherworldly.

"Ulla, we have to leave," Thera whispered urgently, tearing her gaze away from the ghastly painting. But Ulla couldn't tear herself away from the haunting image. Deep down, she knew that the answer to their current predicament lay within the secrets of this room.

Rallying her courage, Ulla stepped closer to the portrait, her eyes darting over the details. As she examined the figures, a chilling realization washed over her. The male and female portrayed in the painting were draped in ceremonial robes, their hands holding an object that appeared to be a key. A key that bore a striking resemblance to the one hanging around her neck.

Her heart pounding in her chest, Ulla slowly reached up, grasping the key pendant and pulling it out from beneath her clothing. As soon as she held it in her hand, the pendant emitted a faint, ethereal glow. It resonated with the sickly green light in the room, as if it recognized its origins.

The events of the night suddenly grew clearer in Ulla's mind. The gruesome murders, the creature terrorizing the house, the sinister portraits—they were all connected, all leading to this moment. Ulla knew that if she wanted to save herself and Thera, she had to unravel the secrets hidden within her family's home.

With newfound determination, Ulla turned to Thera, her eyes shining with resolve. "We need to find the truth, Thera. We need to discover what lies at the heart of this darkness. Only then can we escape this house and put an end to the horrors that haunt us."

Thera hesitated for a moment, her gaze filled with both fear and trust. Finally, she nodded. They would face the unknown together, guided by the key that held the power to unlock the treacherous secrets of their home. And as they ventured further into the labyrinth of the house, their footsteps echoing through the halls, they vowed to emerge not just alive, but with the truth that would shatter the horrors that plagued them all.
