Reina Diaz was sitting in the passenger seat of her brother's car, her long brown hair pulled back into a ponytail and her feet up on the dashboard. Her brother, Roberto, was at the wheel, laughing with his friends from high school. It was their last week of school before summer break, and Reina couldn't be happier. She had been looking forward to that break for months now. She was really looking forward to getting away from home for a while. She'd been stuck in the same small town all her life and she needed some fresh air... or something like that. She gazed out the window at the passing scenes of cornfields and suburban neighborhoods, a soft smile on her lips.

"Hey guys," Roberto suddenly announced, "I have an idea."

"Yeah?" one of his friends replied. "What is it?"

"Let's do something fun tonight! Let's go over to my place and play video games!" he exclaimed excitedly.

Reina's smile didn't fade at this announcement; in fact, it grew as she imagined herself joining them for some video games on the couch in their living room. Oh, she loved video games... but she wished she could play them with her friends rather than just watch Roberto play them all the time. She had always wanted to play video games with him... but whenever they got together to do that, Roberto would end up paying attention only to his friends while she just watched him play alone. It was just another reminder of how different they were... and how hard it was for Reina to be accepted as a boy. But if there was one thing she remembered from her mother, it was that "boys are strong". And so was she.

When they arrived at Roberto's house later that day, everyone went straight into the living room and turned on the TV. Reina felt almost giddy as she stood there by herself watching everyone else settle themselves onto the couches and chairs around her - but then Roberto came over and sat down beside her instead of on his own couch like everyone else had done. He gave Reina a quick look out of the corner of his eye before turning towards the TV screen in front of them and calling out: "Let's play Mario Kart!"

Reina sighed softly to herself as she watched him boot up Super Mario Kart – like always – and start choosing characters while everyone else looked on. As he called "ready", Reina took a deep breath before calling out: "No thanks." Everyone stared at her in shock when she continued: "I think I'll just watch you guys play." A long moment passed before somebody finally spoke up: "Hey! You can't just sit there and not play!" As if by cue, Roberto turned around with a surprised look on his face: "But..." He trailed off when he saw Reina shrug nonchalantly: "I'm fine either way."

After an awkward moment where everybody just stared at each other without saying anything, Roberto shrugged and said: "Well... alright." He turned back to his game as everyone started picking their characters again – except for Reina this time who chose Toadette instead before jumping onto one of the couches behind everyone else and allowing herself to relax against its backrest as she watched them play for a few minutes in silence. But then someone spoke up: "Wait! Where did Toadette go?" Everybody looked at each other awkwardly as they realized Reina wasn't there anymore... until someone finally said: "Oh yeah! I forgot we invited Reina today..." Nobody said anything after that until Roberto suddenly shouted out: "Where is she?!" When nobody answered right away, he pushed himself off his couch angrily: "She was right here a second ago! Did someone move her?!" There were more looks exchanged between everybody before somebody finally said: "... No?" Roberto puffed out his chest angrily before storming off towards their rooms upstairs – obviously looking for Reina – while everybody else followed him quietly with worried looks on their faces because they knew no good would come from this situation if Roberto found out where Reina really was...

Reina sat alone in Roberto's bedroom, her heart pounding in her chest as she heard Roberto's footsteps growing louder and closer. She had managed to sneak past him in the living room and find refuge in his room, desperately hoping he wouldn't discover her hiding place. The room was dimly lit by the soft glow of a lava lamp on his bedside table, casting eerie shadows on the walls. Reina pressed her back against the door, praying silently that she would go unnoticed.

Outside the room, Roberto's voice grew louder, filled with a mix of concern and anger. "Where did she go? She was right here, damn it!" His footsteps echoed through the hallway, frantic and purposeful. Reina's heart sank as she realized her plan had backfired. She had intended to watch the others play from the safety of the shadows, not inviting suspicion. But now, the spotlight was on her, and she feared the consequences of Roberto's discovery.

Roberto's friends exchanged nervous glances, unsure of what they should do. One of them, Carlos, took a step forward and spoke up. "Roberto, calm down. Maybe she just went to the bathroom or something. Let's not jump to conclusions."

But Roberto was already consumed by his anger. He stormed back down the stairs, his voice filled with frustration. "No, I know she's here. She wouldn't just leave without saying anything. Reina!" He shouted her name as he searched the living room, his voice echoing off the walls.

Reina's mind raced as she tried to come up with a plan. She couldn't stay hidden forever, but she also couldn't bear the idea of confronting Roberto directly. Taking a deep breath, she scanned the room for any potential hiding spots. Her eyes landed on a half-open window, inviting her with the promise of escape.

She made her decision in an instant. With a quiet resolve, Reina moved towards the window, carefully sliding it open. The night air rushed in, bringing with it a sense of freedom and uncertainty. She hesitated for a moment, peering out into the darkness beyond, and then she took a step onto the windowsill.

Just as Reina was about to swing her leg out and make her escape, a voice stopped her in her tracks. "Where do you think you're going?"

Reina froze, her heart pounding in her ears. She turned towards the sound, her eyes widening when she saw Roberto standing in the doorway, his expression a mix of confusion and disappointment.

Roberto approached her, his voice softening. "Reina, why did you run away? We're your friends. We care about you."

Reina's gaze dropped to the ground, her voice barely above a whisper. "I just... I didn't want to intrude. I thought you didn't want me to play."

Roberto looked at her, his eyes filled with genuine remorse. "Reina, you're my sister. Of course, I want you to be a part of things. I'm sorry if I've made you feel left out before."

Tears welled up in Reina's eyes as she met Roberto's gaze, her voice trembling with emotion. "You mean it?"

Roberto nodded, his voice filled with sincerity. "I mean it, Reina. Let's go back downstairs and play together."

Reina felt a flood of relief wash over her, a weight being lifted from her shoulders. She extended a shaky hand towards him, feeling the warmth of forgiveness in the air. Roberto took her hand and together they walked back downstairs, back towards the laughter and camaraderie of their friends.

As they settled back into the living room, Reina couldn't help but feel a surge of gratitude. No longer on the sidelines, she realized she had found her place among her friends, where she was accepted and valued for who she truly was. And in that moment, as they all picked up the controllers, Reina knew that there was strength in being herself, in being Reina Diaz.
