Lucy's Dangerous Shrinkage

I opened my eyes and saw a figure looming over me. I couldn't make it out, but I could tell it was a person.

"Hello?" I said groggily. My voice sounded strange, like it was being played through an old radio with bad reception. The figure moved closer, and I sat up quickly and held my hand to my head. It felt like someone had taken a jackhammer to my brain and now there was nothing left but dust.

"Jane?" a familiar voice said. It was Jane. She smiled at me with her big blue eyes and blonde hair, strands of which stuck up in odd places. "I'm so glad you're okay!" she said, her voice echoing slightly as if she were in a very large room and not standing right next to me. "Are you alright?"

I stared at her for a long time before answering. "Yeah," I said slowly, "I feel... weird." The words came out in short, stilted bursts as if they were being squeezed through a very small space. "What happened?" I asked, glancing around the room we were in. It looked just like our living room: the same brown leather couch, the same bookshelf, the same rug on the floor that had been there for as long as I could remember--but it was all wrong somehow. It was too big; everything seemed more than twice its original size. Jane shrugged and began looking around the room herself for some reason. She walked over to the bookshelf and stood on her tiptoes to inspect some of the titles there; I watched as she stared at one book in particular for a bit too long before bobbing back down to her feet again, frowning slightly and turning away from the shelf to scan the rest of our living room surroundings. She did this three times before turning back to face me again. Her eyes widened slightly as if she'd spotted something incredibly shocking or surprising--something that made her look both exhilarated and fearful at once--before she shook her head and turned away again.

I stood up shakily, wincing at the pain jumping up through my neck and shoulders--what felt like miles of muscle lines felt twisted together into knots... or maybe they'd been cut off altogether? If that's what had happened then why was it still hurting so much?

"Jane?" I asked hesitantly after walking over to her, staring down at my long legs as if they were impossible things belonging to someone else entirely. "What happened?" My voice echoed around us weirdly for a second or two before fading away into silence once more. Jane continued staring ahead blankly for another moment or two before looking back at me again with wide eyes that sparkled with tears threatening to spill down her pale cheeks any second now; she opened her mouth like she was going to answer but then closed it again when no sound came out--nothing but silence filling our home once more until suddenly she burst into tears silently and buried her face against my shoulder, sobbing desperately while clinging onto my shirt sleeve like it was the only thing keeping her sane right now. And suddenly I couldn't take it anymore: whatever had happened here needed explaining--and fast--because whatever it was had clearly freaked my best friend out big time!

"Jane!" I yelled loudly in my high-pitched voice (which still sounded strangely familiar). "What's wrong? Tell me what's happening!"

She looked up at me with shocked eyes that seemed both confused and full of terror at the same time; she wiped under one eye with an arm that was far too thin for someone who hadn't gone on any kind of diet in years (and who worked out every single day!). "You don't remember?" she whispered fearfully after taking a deep breath to calm herself down enough to be able to talk properly again without sobbing even more tears (or throwing up).

I stared back at her blankly; no, no I didn't remember anything about what had just happened here--why wouldn't I remember something important like that? Wasn't anyone else worried about this sort of thing? Did they all have amnesia too or something?
