Saito sat at the head of a long conference table, his hands folded in front of him. On either side were the members of Cobb’s team: Arthur, Eames, Yusuf, and Ariadne. They all stared at Saito expectantly.
“I have a proposal for you,” Saito said. “I want you to perform an inception on Robert Fischer.”
Cobb frowned. “Inception? I thought we were strictly in the business of extraction.”
“This is different,” Saito replied. “I want you to plant an idea in Fischer’s mind that will lead him to dissolve his father’s empire.”
“And why would we do this?” Arthur asked.
“Because if you succeed, I can make your legal troubles disappear and allow you to return home to your children,” Saito said, looking directly at Cobb.
Cobb hesitated for a moment before nodding. “Alright, we’ll do it. But we’ll need complete control over the environment.”
“Agreed,” Saito said with a smile.
As they began discussing the details of the job, Cobb couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off about Saito’s offer. He seemed too eager, too willing to give them everything they wanted. But Cobb pushed those thoughts aside and focused on planning their strategy.
Over the next few weeks, Cobb and his team meticulously prepared for the inception on Robert Fischer. They studied every detail of his life and created a shared dream space where they could carry out their mission.
Finally, the day arrived for them to enter Fischer’s dreams and begin their work. As they lay down in their chairs and connected themselves to the PASIV device, Cobb couldn’t help but feel a sense of unease.
“Are you ready?” he asked his team.
They all nodded and closed their eyes as Yusuf activated the device. Instantly, they found themselves in the dream world, surrounded by a high-tech fortress that represented Fischer’s mind.
As they made their way through the various dream layers, Cobb couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong. He noticed subtle inconsistencies in the dreamscape and started to suspect that they were being manipulated.
“Saito!” Cobb shouted into the void. “What are you doing?”
Suddenly, Saito appeared before him, a smug smile on his face. “I’m sorry, Mr. Cobb. It seems there’s been a change of plans.”
“What do you mean?” Cobb demanded.
“You see, I never had any intention of having you perform an inception on Robert Fischer,” Saito explained. “This was all a test, to see if you were capable of carrying out a much more important mission.”
Cobb felt his anger rising. “And what mission would that be?”
“To perform an inception on me,” Saito said. “There’s another corporation who wants to take over my business empire, and they think planting the idea of dissolving my company in my mind is the best way to do it.”
Cobb stared at Saito in disbelief. He had been played from the beginning, manipulated into carrying out someone else’s agenda.
“What happens now?” Cobb asked.
“Now, you have a choice,” Saito said. “You can either complete your original mission and plant the idea in Fischer’s mind or turn against your employer and help me stop this inception from happening.”
Cobb looked at his team, who were watching him with expectant eyes.
“We’ll finish what we started,” Cobb said with determination.
Saito nodded approvingly. “Very well. I suppose I should wish you good luck then.”
As Saito disappeared back into the depths of the dream world, Cobb turned to his team and sighed.
“Let’s get back to work,” he said.
