Whispers of the Tides

The waves bobbed up and down while the ship weaved through them. Diego, who had been at my side the whole time, held tightly to the railing as he leaned over to get a better view of my face.

“Yes, is it that bad?” I asked, looking out at the endless clusters of whitecaps.

“No, no, not at all,” Diego replied. “I was just checking to see if you were still awake…”

“Oh sure, I am wide awake now. Thanks to you…” I sighed as I rolled my eyes away from his gaze towards the horizon.

“So what do you want to talk about?” he asked with a smile.

“What? You think we have anything left to talk about? We have nothing in common! You are a man! And I am a woman! We are from different cultures- different times! We don't even speak the same language! The only thing we have in common is that we don't belong here! And we both know it's a matter of time until they figure us out; throw us overboard and say we drowned at sea…” I rambled on, trying to convince myself more than anyone else that this was a mistake.

Diego looked back at me and said: “If you would rather be anywhere else but here with me right now, then by all means go ahead. You can leave anytime you want. But I would rather die than give up on us now… Not after everything that has happened between us… It would be like throwing this whole experience with you away… And I don't want that. I really don't... So if you could just wait until tomorrow before you make any decisions; then maybe things will look better then… If not, well then that is fine too… But if so, then please stay with me for one more day… After that then you can decide for yourself what to do next… How does that sound?”

I looked at him and gave him a smile in return. He squeezed my hand and smiled back at me as he pulled me closer towards him. Then he slowly started leaning down so he could kiss me… After our lips touched for a moment he pulled away from me and said: “So how did that feel? Was it different from kissing your husband?” After hearing this question my mind flashed back to the days when I was married to Paulo back home in Portugal; even though we had grown distant over the years and our marriage was basically over before he died and left me in a wheelchair... But still somehow it hurt to hear someone bring up his name when kissing me… So immediately after hearing Diego's question I tried pulling away from him again... But this time he grabbed hold of my arm tightly while holding fast onto the railing with his other arm so I couldn't move an inch without falling into the ocean... “You can try all you want to pull away from me, but I am not letting go of either one of us until we both fall into the ocean together… So unless you want both of us to die today then please stop struggling and just enjoy the moment while it lasts… Because once tomorrow comes you might not have another chance with me again… So just enjoy it while it lasts because tomorrow might never come for us again...”

I looked at Diego, his eyes intense with determination, and felt a jolt of adrenaline surge through me. His words resonated with a truth that I couldn't ignore. The wind whipped through our hair, the saltwater mist stinging our faces, as we stood there on the deck, holding onto each other and the edge of the railing for dear life.

For a moment, I closed my eyes, allowing my thoughts to drift back to Paulo – my late husband. Our marriage had been a shell of its former glory long before his untimely demise. Paulo had been a good man, but we had grown apart, tethered only by the memory of what our love had once been. The pain of his mention irked me, reminding me of the bitterness that had lingered throughout the last days of our marriage.

But here, with Diego, things were different. In his arms, I experienced a strange sense of liberation. Yes, we were from different backgrounds, different eras, but none of that mattered in the vast expanse of the open sea. The waves crashing against the ship seemed to echo the storm swirling within me, and for the first time, I felt myself truly alive.

With those thoughts cascading through my mind, I returned my gaze to Diego, his grip on my arm unyielding. The ocean roared around us, an untamed force that mirrored the fire burning within both of us. And in that moment, I made a silent vow to seize the opportunity fate had thrown at me.

I stopped struggling against Diego's firm hold, my body relaxing against the railing. A mirthful smile tugged at the corners of his lips, his eyes filled with a mixture of relief and unyielding determination.

"Tomorrow," I whispered, my voice carried away by the wind. "I will wait until tomorrow to decide."

Diego nodded, his grip on me loosening as he sensed my surrender. His hand slowly shifted from my arm to cup my face gently. The electricity between us intensified as his thumb brushed against my cheekbone, soothing the lines of worry etched there.

Leaning in, he kissed me again, a tender reassurance that sent my heart reeling. In that moment, it became clear to me that the confines of time and language could not contain the raw connection we shared.

We stood there on the deck, our bodies entwined, as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting vivid hues of pink and gold across the sky. It was as if the universe itself had conspired to paint a backdrop for our love, a canvas to immortalize our fleeting moments together.

As night fell, we retreated to our cabin, hand in hand, our hearts entangled like the secrets hidden beneath the waves. Wrapped in the arms of each other, we drifted off to sleep, hoping that tomorrow would bring a new dawn and the promise of a future we dared not dream of.

The ship sailed on, carrying us further away from the lands we once called home, and towards an unknown destination that held the possibility of a love that defied time and logic.

Tomorrow would come, and with it, a choice that would define our destiny. But for now, in this narrow sliver of time, we found solace in each other's embrace, a sanctuary in the wild, untamed vastness of the sea. And as the ship sailed on into the night, it carried with it the whispers of love, the echoes of laughter, and the promise of a deep connection that would forever defy the boundaries of space and time.
