The audience howled with excitement, “You’re gonna lose! You’re gonna lose!” the cowboys shouted in unison, the men and women in the crowd jeered and hissed at Sydney. A couple of black people joined in the chants.

Sydney had never been so exhausted in her life. She was out of breath and her legs were about to give way. She was a good fighter but she wasn’t athletic. Her face was bruised and covered in blood from Jase’s punches and kicks. Her arms were scarred and her wrists were sprained from the rope he tied her up with. The only thing that kept her going was the thought of her daughter back home.

Sydney had never imagined she’d be facing a white man for her freedom in New Zealand. But after her husband died and her home burned down, she found herself bound her wrists and standing before a racist judge. Sydney was lucky that she had a neighbor who happened to be a lawyer and he helped her write a letter to the New Zealand government to ask for her release. As soon as she got out, she bought an air ticket to Australia and took her chances there. But Sydney was not lucky again. She was caught and brought before the same judge and made to pay a hefty fine. Unfortunately, Sydney didn’t have any money so the judge decided she could work it off.

The first few days were excruciatingly hard. Sydney was put in a cage and forced to watch as people came to the circus and paid money to see her. She slept on a dirty mattress filled with bugs and was barely fed. She kept begging for her freedom but the owner didn’t care. He was going to make as much money as he could from Sydney and then sell her off to the highest bidder.

Then one day, a young cowboy came to the circus. He was heavily tattooed and wore a cowboy hat. He looked like the typical cowboy you see in movies. Sydney was especially drawn to him. He was handsome and looked like he was kind. He introduced himself as Jase and asked why she was there. Before she could answer, the owner appeared and told them to get lost, they were disturbing the show. But Jase politely asked him not to sell her. He said he would buy her if he could.

The owner laughed, “You? A white guy? Where are you going to take her?”

Jase avoided eye contact with the owner and looked into Sydney’s eyes. She felt a strange connection with him.

“I’m taking her to the west,” Jase said. “I’m taking her to America.”

Sydney was taken aback by this idea. She had heard stories about America from her husband. He used to tell her about the freedom he had felt when he first arrived. It was a place full of opportunities and many natives lived on reservations in the west. He told her about his best friend, a native called Thunder. In America, people did not discriminate against people based on their skin color. They didn’t think that those with lighter skin were better.

Sydney was intrigued by this but she knew the owner wouldn’t let them go.

“You don’t have the money,” he said.

“Yes, I do,” Jase said as he pulled out a wad of cash. The owner’s jaw dropped. Jase counted the money and put ten thousand dollars on the table.

“I’ll give you five thousand now and the rest when we get there.”

The owner didn’t say a word. He took the money and gave Sydney a key. “Get out,” he said and he walked away.

Jase and Sydney walked away from the circus and left the city. They bought tickets for the train ride to Utah, USA.

Sydney and Jase fell in love during the arduous journey. Sydney told Jase about her family and friends back home and Jase told her about his life in the West. The train stopped at multiple cities and towns, each one bigger than the last. Sydney was curious about everything she saw, the people, the buildings and the culture. One day, Jase took Sydney to a native reservation in the west. It was beautiful and many people lived there. Sydney was happy to see them. Jase told her that they were called Shoshone, they were a native American tribe.

Finally, they arrived in Utah and Jase was ready to give the rest of his money to the owner. But instead of taking the money, the owner tied Sydney’s hands and took her to the nearest town. Sydney begged him to stop, she pleaded with him but he simply ignored her.

“Don’t worry,” Jase said. “I will find you.”

Sydney cried as she watched Jase walk away. She didn’t know what to do. The owner had her tied up and was dragging her through the streets. Sydney got scared when they stopped at a circus. She knew what she was walking into.

The audience started to cheer and Sydney could hear the cowboys chanting. She closed her eyes and waited for the worst. Suddenly, she was pushed to the ground. She opened her eyes and saw Jase standing over her. He untied her hands and helped her up.

“How did you find me?” Sydney asked.

“I went back to the reservation,” Jase said. “The Shoshone people told me where you were.”
