Max and the Supernatural War
·
Published 1/18/2023Young witch Max must reluctantly join forces with werewolves and vampires to battle a sinister monster threatening the universe they inhabit, while infusing the thrilling journey with humour and wit.
"The monsters are coming."
I raised my head from my book, where I had been reading about the theory that the extinction of the dinosaurs was caused by a meteorite impact in the Yucatán Peninsula and not by a meteorite impact in the Yucatán Peninsula. I looked at the speaker. It was my roommate, a werewolf named Lucius.
"What?" I replied.
"The monsters are coming," he repeated. "They're going to attack the school."
"Are you sure?" I asked, closing my book. "That's awful news."
"Of course I'm sure." He nodded. "I can hear it. They're singing."
"You can hear them sing?" I asked, incredulously. "How?"
"My ears can pick up frequencies even higher than yours, Max," he replied. "It's the curse of lycanthropy."
"Oh, right," I said. "Well, what are we going to do about it?"
Lucius thought for a moment. "I think we should go to the cafeteria and eat all their food."
"That's a little... extreme," I replied. "But I like the thought behind it."
"Where's your sense of urgency, Max?" Lucius asked. "This school is in danger. I can feel it in my very core."
"I can feel it too, Lucius," I said. "But we don't want to get too jumpy. We should probably wait for confirmation before we panic."
"Okay..." Lucius replied, uncertainly. "I'll go back to my room and check on the plan again."
"That's probably a good idea," I said.
Lucius left the room, closing the door behind him. I returned to my book, trying to memorize the main points of the theory that the extinction of the dinosaurs was caused by a meteorite impact in the Yucatán Peninsula and not by a meteorite impact in the Yucatán Peninsula.
An hour later, Lucius returned. "Max, the monsters are here!"
"What?" I exclaimed. "How could they have gotten here so fast? The school isn't even halfway across the galaxy."
"They didn't have to get here," Lucius said. "They're already in the building!"
"Really?" I sighed. "This is getting ridiculous. How many times do we have to tell them to stop putting the school on their home worlds?"
"This place is crawling with monsters," Lucius said. "I've already seen zombies, vampires, werewolves, and several kinds of mythical creatures I haven't even heard of."
"This school is full of monsters," I replied. "That doesn't mean there's an invasion."
"Well, I'm leaving," Lucius announced. "I don't want to be here when these creatures attack. I'm going to find my own planet. Where I can be free to run around during the full moon without worrying about any pesky humans getting in the way."
"That's a good idea, Lucius," I replied. "I'll pack up my stuff too. Maybe I'll find a new school somewhere nearby. Or even a new galaxy."
"I'll see you later, Max," Lucius said. "It's been nice living with a human."
"Likewise."
Lucius left the room, leaving me alone. I stood up, closed my book, and went to my closet to get some clothes. I was almost finished packing when I heard a voice behind me.
"Max?" the voice asked. "Is that you?"
"Yes." I turned around. Standing in the doorway was a vampire girl I knew as Eliza. "What are you doing here?"
"I was looking for you," she said, stepping into the room. "I wanted to talk to you about something."
"What is it?" I asked.
"It's about this war between the werewolves and us," Eliza explained.
"There's no war," I said, finishing packing my clothes. "Vampires and werewolves are two sides of the same coin. We need each other. And if you ask me, the werewolves need us more than we need them."
"No, Max," Eliza replied. "The war is real. It's been going on for centuries."
"What?" I asked. "Centuries? Really?"
"Yes," Eliza replied. "Ever since the beginning of time."
"Wow," I said. "That's a long time. I'm just a kid. I haven't even been alive long enough to remember the beginning of time."
"Don't you care that we're fighting against a common enemy?" Eliza asked. Her eyes began to glow yellow. "Don't you care that we might be wiped out? That our entire species could be destroyed?"
"Yeah..." I replied. "Of course I care. I just don't know how I can help. I'm not a fighter. All I do is read books and make food for everyone."
"You're the chosen one," Eliza said. "I saw it in your future."
"Wait, what?" I asked.
"You're the one who's going to end this war between our races," Eliza continued. "You're going to save the world."
"I am?" I asked. "How?"
"I don't know," Eliza replied. "But I know it's true."
"Okay..." I said. "I'll try to do my best."
"Good," Eliza said. She took a step closer and leaned forward, her lips slightly parted.
I closed my eyes and kissed her.
