 The first time I saw him, it was just a little too late.

I had been tailing the man for two blocks now. Not a hard job, considering that he walked with the plodding determination of a boulder rolling downhill. To look at him, you would think he was in no rush to get anywhere, but I knew better. The air around him was tense and expectant. He had the look of someone who wanted to be somewhere else. Now. 

He turned the corner sharply, and I quickened my pace to follow him around. There he was! Right in front of me! I reached into my coat pocket for my badge and gun, only to realize that both were still in the car. 

"Hey!" I shouted, running towards him "Stop right there!"

The man wheeled around, his eyes going wide at seeing me. For a second, we stared at each other silently. Then he threw his head back and laughed like a hyena. 

"Hahaha! You're a cop?" He said between cackles "This is fucking priceless! Hahahaha!" 

"Yes!" I snapped indignantly "That's exactly what a cop would say!" My mind raced as I tried to figure out how this could have happened. This wasn't supposed to happen! Of all the things in this world, why did I have to be a cop? Why couldn't I be an office worker or something? Anything but a cop! The man - no longer laughing - was pulling out something from his jacket pocket and pointing it at me. 

"W-wait!" I stammered "Don't shoot! You don't understand! What you did wasn't right!" 

"You're the one who doesn't understand shit," He replied coolly "I've done nothing wrong." The object in his hands glinted in the sunlight, and I almost screamed when I realized it was...a camera? No...that couldn't be right...it looked far too small for that...and what was with those strange marks on it? I wasn't sure; it seemed more like an art project than anything else, with some strange runes etched into its surface and glass-like material surrounding them...but how could such a thing do any harm? And then another thought crossed my mind: what about guns? Were guns even illegal these days? Could people just walk around with guns? It didn't seem possible...but then again, this whole situation didn't seem possible either...

 The tower loomed over the skyline of Paris, a dark and foreboding monolith. Etienne looked upon its shadow cast upon the city. His face grim in the twilight.

"The Black Tower..." He thought to himself. "It is more than just a myth." 

The young Frenchman felt his pulse quicken as he glanced back across the city where he was staying with his old friend Glenn in a small apartment near the Sorbonne University. A light flickered in one of the windows of the building. Glenn was up this late studying again; always on a quest for knowledge. And what of him? He had abandoned his studies at the Sorbonne, an esteemed university, to pursue an ill-advised lifelong quest for adventure and glory. Now, he found himself standing outside of that very same university staring up at the Black Tower itself. It was like an ironic curse.

He sighed loudly and began walking towards the tower itself, each step echoed by his footsteps on the cobblestone street. He hadn't eaten since yesterday afternoon when he had left Glenn's apartment and made his way to France's capital city. He had been meaning to stop for food but he couldn't bear to leave Paris without first seeing the tower with his own eyes before heading off to Bordeaux, where he was sure all of this would end in failure anyway. Who was he kidding? He wasn't some great champion destined to save the world from evil forces. He was a man with a sword who happened to be in the right place at the right time when it mattered most and he killed two dark creatures that were threatening his homeland. Yes, they were powerful adversaries but they were not unbeatable and if it weren't for Glenn's expertise in ancient lore, they'd still be causing havoc all across France right now. No, now they were going up against something far stronger than those mere creatures ever were: The Black Tower itself! A being so powerful that even God himself feared it!

He shook his head as if to shake off these thoughts that plagued him whenever he thought about it all -- this prophecy nonsense from ancient texts written by people who clearly didn't know what they were talking about - and continued on ahead towards the tower which seemed closer by each passing moment now. It was then that something caught his eye up ahead. It might have been just a trick of the light but for some reason, there appeared to be some kind of figure standing atop the roof of a building directly across from where he stood on the street; watching him with interest as he walked forward slowly towards them with his hands on his hips and looking up ahead with resolve in both his gait and posture as if challenging them to make their move against him so that he could vent out all of frustration at once against them! He wondered if this was one of those creatures trying to lure him into crossing into their territory or maybe it was just some homeless guy looking for some money...it didn't matter either way because after all, where else would someone go but here? If you were going to lure someone here then surely you'd put yourself in plain sight...or perhaps this was one of those creatures wishing to test him somehow before actually making their move against him? Maybe it wanted something from him...they did say that they wanted something from humanity after all...something that nobody quite knew what it was yet but nevertheless, it meant something important enough for them to actually interfere with human affairs like this after all!

Etienne pressed further ahead and soon enough found himself standing outside a door which led inside a tall building with no windows whatsoever on its facade! He took a deep breath and exhaled loudly before taking one last look around him before finally turning back around towards the door leading inside where only darkness awaited him beyond it; waiting for him like an abyss ready to consume everything within its eternal embrace! Etienne gritted his teeth together as he reached out towards that door handle and grasped hold of it tightly while pushing down hard on it until eventually forcing it down low enough until finally opening that door wide open! However, nothing happened immediately after doing so; nothing moved except for the shadows within flickering slightly along with each gust of wind that blew past outside past him on this street...nothing moved inside at all except for those shadows which danced within their confines like moths trapped within a jar until finally disappearing altogether once Etienne stepped inside through that doorway behind him! The young Frenchman stopped dead in his tracks as soon as he had taken one step inside; completely dumbfounded by what lay before him...or rather whom lay before him because standing directly in front of him was clearly none other than Minerva herself!  The first time I went to the White House was in 1952. 

I was ten years old, and my uncle Mike took me to see Dwight Eisenhower’s inauguration. It was a cold day, and we were standing so close to the podium that when they turned on the heaters, my hair started smoking. The heat made me feel like I was going to throw up, so I wandered into the bathroom. Standing at the urinal, I noticed that all of the other men in the room had their hats and scarves on, but I didn’t have one because my mom hadn’t been able to afford any winter clothes for me. So when I came out of the bathroom and saw that everyone had left the stands, I thought it was because they didn’t want me there without a hat or scarf.

I followed them outside and walked around for an hour trying to find my way back inside. When I finally got there, I saw that everyone else was watching Lyndon Johnson take his oath of office as president. 

When LBJ finished speaking, he waved at us from his limo just like Eisenhower had done. So did Hubert Humphrey, who had just taken his place as Vice President. Then Johnson got in his car and drove off with Mrs. Johnson sitting next to him. Everyone else got in their cars too and drove away. My uncle Mike tried to find me, but couldn’t because all of the cars looked alike that day, even after Johnson had wrecked his own Buick by hitting a tree in Dallas two months later. After he died and Bobby Kennedy took his place as President, they changed all of their cars because they didn’t want them to look like the ones that carried Johnson and Kennedy when they were shot. So now when you see one of their cars on TV you can tell it’s theirs right away. But back then you couldn’t tell. 

I never found out how long it took anyone else to notice that I wasn’t with them anymore, but it must have been at least five hours because that night when Mom came home from work she started yelling at Uncle Mike for letting me walk around by myself in Washington Dc in February without a hat or scarf or a coat or anything and not telling her where we had gone even though she asked him over and over again until finally he admitted that he had lost track of me somewhere between the Lincoln Memorial and Union Station where we had gone to buy our tickets for Eisenhower’s Inauguration Ceremony earlier that day which could have happened anywhere along a six mile stretch of road between those two places which are both pretty big cities themselves so Uncle Mike said he started driving up and down each street looking for me because he figured if anyone would know how to find their way around in Washington DC it would be me although he only told Mom this much later after she smacked him across the face with her purse while screaming “How could you let something like this happen?” over and over again which is why my jaw still hurts like hell today after all these years whenever somebody bumps into me unexpectedly or grabs my cheeks between their thumb and forefinger so hard that they leave little blisters behind which is what happens whenever Aunt Maggie comes over to visit us almost every weekend from her place outside Chicago where she lives with Uncle Howard who works for Boeing which is where Dad used to work before he retired twelve years ago which is why Aunt Maggie always brings me new toys whenever she visits which is why I love her more than anyone else except Mom who doesn't love anybody else except for Dad who died back in 2003 from cancer which is why Aunt Maggie drives over here every weekend from Chicago except for last weekend when Aunt Maggie called Uncle Howard from her place outside Chicago where she lives with him now instead of driving over here from Washington DC where she used to live before moving across town with Uncle Bob who lives alone now since Uncle Mike moved back home to Los Angeles last fall so he can be near his wife who has Alzheimer's which is why Aunt Maggie told us during dinner that night last Saturday night before going outside in her garden behind her house on Sunday afternoon just before Hurricane Irma hit Chicago last Sunday afternoon where she lives with Uncle Howard now instead of coming over here twice a week like she usually does every Tuesday and Friday after work except for last Monday morning when Hurricane Irma hit Los Angeles instead of Chicago but not hard enough so that people had time enough to drive out of town before getting trapped by the floodwater rising up everywhere inside their houses just like what happened back in 1953 when Hurricane Hazel hit here causing millions of dollars worth of damage throughout the entire state including Hoboken New Jersey where I lived until 1955 before moving back here during Christmas break so I could go skiing with my friends at Snow Valley Ski Resort which is why we went driving up into Big Bear Lake above San Bernardino California yesterday afternoon during lunch break at work today before school starts tomorrow morning because one of my friends wants me to meet his girlfriend's parents after school tomorrow afternoon so they can ask him if it's okay if they get married someday soon even though they're already engaged already like three weeks ago while they're still seventeen years old plus four months apart from each other except for him being born on one month closer to January 1st than her birthday on December 30th which means neither one of them will be eighteen years old yet until May 8th next year unless something bad happens along the way which is why nobody should ever try doing anything important nowadays because everything always turns out exactly opposite from what you thought it would be especially if you think it's gonna turn out better than it really does especially if you think it's gonna turn out bad enough so everybody will forget about anything good you've done in your life before then but instead ends up turning out worse than anybody thought possible except maybe 9/11 during 2001 or so whenever all those planes crashed into all those buildings including the Twin Towers which nobody expected even though everybody knew something bad was gonna happen sometime soon even though nobody knew exactly when or how only that something like this would probably happen sooner rather than later except probably not this bad ever again which is what makes 9/11 even worse than Hurricane Hazel or any other disaster since then including Hurricane Katrina during 2005 or so whenever Superstorm Sandy nearly wiped New Orleans off the face of the earth before wiping Hoboken off too during 2012 or so whenever Hurricane Sandy swept through town just days after President Obama won reelection against Mitt Romney who wanted everyone stay poor forever no matter what even though Mitt Romney has nothing whatsoever to do with our current president Donald Trump whose name rhymes with orange plus icky plus gross plus dumb plus ugly plus nasty plus stupid plus bad plus sad plus angry plus mean plus dumb again only worse because unlike George W Bush who kept America safe every single day during 9/11 George W Bush didn't do anything about global warming which threatens our children's future unless somebody stops it soon starting today by putting solar panels everywhere you can put them including everywhere there isn't any sun left including inside your house if you have electricity running through your roof just like my aunt Carolyn showed us how two weeks ago with her husband Richard while visiting us here in Sacramento California last Sunday afternoon while she was still visiting us here yesterday morning instead of visiting us there yesterday afternoon when she might have seen Donald Trump live on TV hosting The Apprentice during Wednesday night prime time instead of staying home watching CNN Newsroom with Anderson Cooper instead which is why we didn't see Donald Trump live on TV hosting The Apprentice during Wednesday night prime time either even though Anderson Cooper talked about how awesome DJT was while calling Hillary Clinton things like "crooked" "nasty" "irritable" "grumpy" "unhinged" "mean" "selfish" "bitter" "vengeful" "bitchy" "unwomanly" "malicious" "warlike" "cruel" "heartless" "evil" "petty" etc etc etc ad nauseam ad infinitum ad The thought didn’t really register as anything more than idle chatter in my head as I took in the landscape of the magical land. A tingling feeling started rising in my chest, and a grin crept across my face. 

*This is it.* My very first time entering another world, and I was already exploring. But there was something else, something that felt wrong… 

I stopped for a second and looked around. The landscape before me was almost familiar, like those paintings you see of an ancient city somewhere in Europe. Tall walls with battlements stood before me, broken down in some places, but otherwise largely intact. Above me shone the sun, but it seemed darker somehow, more purple than orange. It was then that I noticed that I wasn’t alone on this hillside. Sitting by her feet were two girls, one with blonde hair and another with red hair. 

I jumped off my broom and walked towards them. “Hey!” I called out to them, “What are you guys doing here?” The blonde girl looked at me curiously, while the redhead stared at me emotionlessly. They started to speak at the same time, each saying something different. 

“Hel-lo? What are you doing here?” asked the blonde girl sweetly. She had a cute face and freckles dusting her cheeks. She seemed like she could be a pretty good friend if we ever met again. 

The other girl spoke next, this one being the redhead who had yet to say anything other than stare at me blankly. Her eyes were narrowed slightly from what I could only describe as annoyance and irritation towards me for interrupting their conversation. Her white dress reminded me of those you would see on Snow White or even Alice in Wonderland; it certainly suited her well. Her voice carried an air of authority about it; she was probably used to getting her way all the time. “How did you get into this world? You have no right to be here! You should leave now! Go back where you came from!” she spat at me venomously. 

I turned towards the blonde girl and smiled sheepishly, hoping to calm her down a bit so we could start communicating properly. Unfortunately for me, she only seemed angrier after seeing my smile; she stood up angrily and pointed her wand at my face threateningly. “I said go back where you came from! This is our land! Leave now or I will make you leave! Go away now!” she shouted at me angrily through tears which were starting to form in her eyes. As much as I didn’t want to hurt her feelings by leaving so hastily without saying goodbye or thank you or anything like that…I really didn’t feel like getting hexed! So I quickly hopped back on my broomstick and flew off as fast as possible from their sight before either of them could try attacking me with their magic wands again…and miss horribly, of course! 

I continued flying for some time until I spotted a lake below me; judging by its size alone, it must have been massive! Large enough to hold almost all of Tri-Cities inside of it easily! A quick look around told me that there were no signs that anyone had ever been near this place before except for myself; there weren’t any footprints or anything of the sort surrounding the lake itself either…probably because nobody had ever approached it before! Anyways…better check out this lake since I was already here anyways! It would be a shame not to check out such a large body of water after all…at least that’s what I told myself anyways so that I wouldn’t feel too guilty about leaving those two girls behind…those poor girls though…They went through all that trouble just so they could try attacking me with their wands when all along they didn’t even realize who they were attacking…they failed miserably too! With how awful they were at spellcasting, I wonder if they really were real witches after all….or if this was just some sort of elaborate prank set up by kids who thought dressing up as witches would be funny…nahhh someone would never do something like that….right? 

 

 Following her call to service as a Pacific nation's defender, Aicha, a young supergirl with astounding agility and strength, battles against the Forces of Consciousness.  The sound of metal striking metal rang out as Aicha's sword blade met the metal of her opponent's shield. Her opponent, a tall and thickly built man too large to be considered human, was a perfect physical specimen. His skin was pale white, his eyes blue and his hair blonde. Like not just any blonde but that really bright platinum color that some people went for. The kind that doesn't even look natural and you know they paid money for it.

Aicha's foe stood in front of her like a wall, with his shield held before him and his sword pointing at Aicha's chest. Aicha had already swung at his head three times and each time he'd blocked her attack with ease. She'd been dodging his attacks for the past few minutes but she knew she couldn't keep up this pace forever. He was slowly wearing down her defenses and if he didn't do something soon she would be dead or at least severely wounded.

Aicha tried to think of her options as she dodged another swing from her foe's sword. She could try to jump over his head and land behind him or she could try to dodge around him but both those plans had severe drawbacks. If she jumped over him he could easily swing at her while she was in mid air and if she ran around him he could use his shield to pin her against the wall where she'd be an easy target for him. Besides there was no guarantee either strategy would work, so Aicha decided to stick with what she was doing now. 

She slowed down her movements enough for the man in front of her to make a small opening in his defense and then lunged forward and cut a deep slice into his arm. The man grunted in pain but otherwise didn't react much to the hit, which angered Aicha greatly because it meant that it hadn't done much damage to him. He raised his free arm towards the sky and muttered something under his breath. As soon as he finished speaking five swords flew through the air towards him, all of them landing perfectly in his hand with their blades pointed towards Aicha. 

Aicha wasn't sure why he only summoned five swords when there were eight swords floating around him but she wasn't going to complain about it either way because now there was less room for error on his part while they fought. The man took a step back and then charged forwards, swinging all five swords at once in an attempt to overwhelm Aicha. She dodged all five swings easily enough but while doing so she saw an opening in the man's defense where one of the swords had exposed its wielder's side for just a second too long. Aicha took advantage of this opening by lunging forward with all the strength she could muster, cutting into the man's side with enough force to wound him significantly.  

The man grunted again in pain but this time he dropped one of the swords that he'd been holding onto, making it disappear into thin air as soon as it left his hand. He pulled himself back together despite that injury though as he ignored it and continued fighting as though nothing had happened at all . Even though Aicha was slightly impressed by this display of will power on his part she also knew that it wouldn't be long until he wore down eventually because she could see blood streaming down from where she'd wounded him earlier on now.  

Aicha couldn't let herself get distracted by the thought of victory right now though because if she did then he might find an opening in her defenses while she wasn't paying attention and take advantage of it when that happened, which would mean death or serious injury for her most likely depending on how lucky he got today. Instead Aicha focused on dodging as many attacks from her foe as possible while waiting for another opportunity like before to present itself so that she could finish off her opponent without fail this time around instead of getting forced into a bad position like last time due to impatience on her part.  

Eventually after what seemed like forever but probably wasn't more than ten minutes later, Aicha got what looked like a good opening in her opponent's defense again when one of the swords slowed down just long enough for its wielder to realize that something was wrong with it and throw it out of the way before diving away from where it used to be and into cover behind another sword instead before Aicha could reach him if that opening still existed anymore after all this time passed since first spotting it earlier on during their fight . Seeing this chance suddenly vanish made Aicha angry but more than anything else it made her curious about what exactly made that opening appear in the first place when normally they never showed themselves like they did before when fighting against someone who didn't have powers like hers did .

 The figures dashed across the field, a kaleidoscope of colors whirling in a tempest of chaos. Explosions rang out as beams of light cut through the air, impacting on shields and ricocheting off powersuit armor. There was no sign of victory or defeat, just a muddled mess of blood, energy, and death.

From his vantage point atop one of the nearby buildings, Telleron watched with disdain. Over the past several years he had grown used to death and destruction, but it still bothered him to watch the slugfest between his allies and their enemies. He sighed, knowing that there was nothing he could do to help. As an agent of The Foundation there were some things he was not allowed to do. All he could do now was hope that his comrades would survive until the end of this fight. 

He glanced around at the buildings around him, looking for signs that someone had seen him enter. So far everything seemed fine; no alarms had been triggered and it didn't look like anyone had noticed his arrival via teleporter. It had been a risky move to bring Adonna here with him, but she hadn't been in any condition to fly back on her own power. Thankfully she remained unconscious for the trip over and hadn't seen anything during her teleportation which might lead her to suspect that something was wrong with this situation.

He walked toward a nearby alleyway, moving cautiously so as not to be caught by surprise by anyone who might be watching from above. This area wasn't likely to have any agents; they were more likely to be found in other regions where they could monitor activity without being too obvious about it. When he reached the entrance to the alleyway he stopped and looked around again before walking down its length until he came upon a small metal door set into the wall at the far end. He opened it up and stepped inside, quickly closing it behind him before activating the portal that would take him deeper into The Foundation's underground base.
