Error of the Future

The year was 2014, and it's been an interesting ride.

I'm not going to get into the details of what happened, but rest assured it was a lot more than just a series of unfortunate coincidences.

It started with me noticing some odd readings from the LHC - a talk by Stephen Hawking a few years ago had kicked off some fears about the Large Hadron Collider potentially creating a black hole, or another big bang, or something equally catastrophic.

After that, I followed up with some studies on my own, and discovered some worrying results. Turns out one of the departments at CERN was doing some pretty shady stuff behind closed doors. They seemed to be trying to create what they called "a wormhole", without telling anyone else at all.

They were obviously acting under the assumption that if they told everyone else at CERN what they were working on, then word would spread and the project would get shut down - so they kept everything locked in their lair, hidden away from prying eyes and cameras. Luckily for them, I'd always been really good at sneaking around places without getting caught. So I broke into their lab one night, and took pictures of everything I could find, before burning my way back out again.

The next day, I sent everything off to every media outlet in the world, including my old university professor who I knew would take action - he runs CERN for Christ's sake! Before long, everything about this secret project was public knowledge, and the backlash against CERN was huge. It took months for them to clean up their image enough for people to start trusting them again. Enough time for me to put my own plan into action.

You see, after finding out about that wormhole research being done behind everyone's backs, I managed to track down where they'd been hiding it all these years and decided to do something about it myself. So I infiltrated the building one more time while they were all distracted by news of their faults being exposed, and broke into their lab. There was only one scientist there, working late into the night on his latest experiment - no security guards anywhere near him. Easy pickings! He tried fighting back when he realised what was happening - I had to punch him unconscious in order to stop him causing any damage - but he didn't stand a chance against me anyway.

I managed to get everything ready before anyone showed up though - once they saw what had happened there wasn't anything they could do about it either! The other scientists eventually gave up trying to stop me from activating the machine that night - but by then it was too late! To be honest I can't believe how easy it was for me to pull off this whole thing - if I hadn't known better I might have thought it was all part of some plan from above! But you know... maybe it *was* planned? Anyway... let's just say things went exactly as planned once I'd activated the machine...

The first thing that happened was that a small tear opened in space-time on top of my car when I turned my key in the ignition - well... actually it started opening *when* I turned my key in the ignition - but you get the idea! And suddenly there was a flash of light and suddenly there *was* a car where there shouldn't have been one! Oh yeah... by then they'd stopped trying to stop me from turning on the machine obviously... Anyway... that new car kind of freaked me out at first (and scared half my neighbourhood!) but at least it meant we were finally ready to make our trip through time! Myself and my wife had been planning it for ages you see. She hated living in this world anymore as much as I did - so we agreed we needed to leave before things got even worse! We spent our last few minutes together saying goodbye to everyone we knew (I'm so glad we never had kids!) before getting into our new car and heading off down towards Geneva at full speed......
