I don't know why I always feel so comfortable in my own kitchen. It's nothing special. Just a plain, old stove and a few cabinets. In fact, it looks like it hasn't been updated since the 70s. But I always feel safe when I'm here. Sometimes when I'm stressed out or feeling anxious, I'll just wander into my kitchen and start cooking to take my mind off of everything.

Today was one of those days. The kids are getting older now and they're starting to get more active in their extracurricular activities. My husband and I were having a hard time keeping up with them, so we decided to hire someone to help us out with them while we work on our careers. I'm a teacher so that means that I have to go to school during the day and then work from home at night to grade papers and prepare for class the next day. My husband is the same way except he works from home during the day instead of from school.

So now we have an au pair living with us, helping us take care of our children. She's wonderful and sweet but she makes me feel like a terrible mother sometimes because all she does all day long are chores around the house, takes care of the kids, cleans up after them, etc., etc., etc., while I'm in school all day long or grading papers late into the night at home and then going straight to bed after that because I'm exhausted! I mean, how can anyone who is working full-time possibly find time in their schedule to devote quality time with their children?!

I felt guilty about this for quite some time until Terrence came into my life. He was the first man that made me realize that love has no boundaries between age or gender or race or nationality or anything else. He was also the first man that made me realize that being a good parent is more than just providing financial support - it's also being there for your children every step of the way through thick and thin and not letting them grow up without you by their side as much as possible!

It was one of those quiet rainy days here in Rome when Terrence came into my life. The kind of rain where you can only hear it on the windows, not see it falling outside because it's dark outside already, not even able to see your hand in front of your face due to all of this gloominess! Needless to say, I was feeling pretty depressed and lonely on this day because my family had left earlier that morning for a trip to San Francisco and they wouldn't be back until Sunday night - which meant two days away from my babies!

Terrence was sitting alone at one of my favorite caf's - he had his laptop open on the table in front of him and was drinking a cappuccino while looking down at his phone deep in thought when I walked in and sat down next to him. Then he looked up at me and smiled as if he recognized me from somewhere - although we'd never met before!

"Are you Sarah?" he said with a big smile on his face. "Yes," I replied stupidly because how did he know my name?! We hadn't spoken before! He must have read my mind because then he said: "You look just like your photo on Facebook!"

I got really embarrassed but he just laughed like crazy because he thought it was so funny that I got embarrassed by something so silly! Then he told me his name was Terrence, which reminded me of an actor who plays a fictional character named Terrence on some television show called "The Bachelorette". So now whenever Terrence tells me that his name is Terrence, I always giggle like crazy because it reminds me of this dumb TV show! His laugh sounds exactly like Terrence's laugh too - very muffled sounding with lots of air escaping through his nose through his mouth when he laughs!

Anyway, we talked for hours about everything under the sun! He asked me about my family (my kids are awesome!) and work (I make good money!) and hobbies (cooking!) and likes (coffee!) and dislikes (politics!) - you name it! Then finally he asked if he could walk me home because it was getting late outside! So we both put our coats back on (our jackets were upstairs at the caf) and walked slowly together side-by-side through this dark evening toward my apartment building up ahead. When we got inside the building, we stopped at each floor so that only one person could go into the elevator at a time - which meant we had plenty of time to hold hands together all four floors up to my apartment door!

He's been living with us ever since! At first my husband wasn't too happy about having another man living with us but now they're best friends - especially since Terrence helps out around the house waaaaaay more than our au pair ever did these past couple years! We're all so happy together here in Rome...and now when people ask if Terrence is gay and I tell them yes, they always ask why would someone gay want to spend his life living with three heterosexual people? And then I tell them: "Love has no boundaries." And then they understand what being a good parent looks like from now on...

One morning, the sun peeked through the curtains, casting a warm glow across the kitchen. Terrence stood by the stove, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee embracing the room. He always had the coffee ready before anyone else woke up. It had become a morning ritual, a small act of kindness that made us all feel loved. As I entered the kitchen, rubbing the sleep from my eyes, Terrence turned and flashed his signature smile.

"Morning, Sarah," he said cheerfully, pouring a cup of coffee for me.

"Morning, Terrence," I replied, sipping the steaming brew. "You're up early."

He chuckled. "Just wanted to make sure you start the day right. You have a big day ahead, don't you? Parents' day at school."

I nodded, a mixture of excitement and nervousness. It was the day when parents were invited to spend the morning in the classroom, interacting with students and getting a glimpse into their world. As a teacher, it held immense importance for me, a chance to bridge the gap between home and school. But the thought of not having my own children next to me filled me with a pang of melancholy.

Terrence must have noticed the worry on my face, for he placed a gentle hand on my shoulder. "You're going to be amazing. Your students are lucky to have you."

His words melted the tension, and a smile found its way back to my lips. I believed in myself, in my abilities as a teacher. And though my children couldn't physically be present, I knew they were always close to my heart.

At the school, the parents filled the classroom, the air buzzing with a blend of excitement and curiosity. I greeted them all, introducing myself and sharing stories about their children. As I walked through the room, the walls adorned with colorful artwork, I couldn't shake off a certain sense of pride. These children were like my own, their growth and achievements a testament to the love and guidance that surrounded them.

Just as the day was winding down, my phone buzzed with a message from my husband, Paolo. He informed me that they had all landed safely in San Francisco and were enjoying their first day of vacation. I was relieved to hear that they were having fun, but a part of me longed to be there beside them, enjoying the moments that I so often missed.

When I returned home, Terrence stood in the kitchen, rolling dough for a batch of homemade bread. The familiar smell of yeast filled the air, and the sight of him working so effortlessly brought a wave of comfort. We had fallen into a rhythm, a harmony that filled our lives with laughter and support.

I sat at the kitchen table, watching Terrence's skilled hands knead the dough. "Thank you for everything," I said softly, my voice trembling with emotion.

He paused, meeting my gaze. "Sarah, you don't have to thank me. It's an honor to be here, to be a part of your family."

I smiled, tears welling in my eyes. "You've become such an important part of our lives, Terrence. I can't imagine it any other way."

Terrence placed the dough aside and walked over to me, pulling me into a warm embrace. In that moment, our shared love for the children and each other enveloped us, reminding me that family goes beyond blood relations.

As I leaned into his arms, I realized that our bond had grown stronger over time. We had become not just friends but confidants, partners in the intricate dance of parenthood. And though life could be unpredictable and challenging, I knew that as long as we had each other, our family would always find comfort and love within the walls of our humble kitchen.

And so, with the aroma of freshly baked bread filling the room, we stood together, ready to face whatever the future may bring, united by the unbreakable bonds we had created. Our story, like life, continued to unfold, guided by the enduring power of love and the understanding that no matter the circumstances, our kitchen would always be a safe haven, a place where memories were made, and the hearts of those who entered were forever touched.
