1. The Regret of the Atom
·
Published 12/2/2023"Three. Two. One. Drop!" The words echoed in the cockpit as the Enola Gay released its payload, and a sense of finality settled over the crew.
Colonel Paul Tibbets, the pilot, watched as the bomb plummeted towards its target below. He felt a mix of anticipation and dread, knowing that this single act would change the course of history.
In the back of his mind, he wondered how he would feel once it was all over. Would he be relieved? Satisfied? Or would there be something else?
As the plane banked away from the explosion, Tibbets caught a glimpse of the mushroom cloud rising into the sky. It was a sight unlike anything he had ever seen before, and it filled him with a strange sense of awe.
Down below, in Nagasaki and Hiroshima, people were dying. Thousands of them. Men, women, children - all incinerated in an instant by the power of this new weapon.
It was what they had trained for. What they had been preparing for. But now that it was actually happening... now that they were witnessing the destruction firsthand... it was hard to wrap their minds around it.
Tibbets turned to look at his copilot, Robert Lewis. The man's face was pale and drawn as he stared out at the devastation below.
"You alright?" Tibbets asked him.
Lewis nodded slowly. "Yeah," he said quietly. "I think so."
Tibbets understood how he felt. They had just unleashed hell on earth - a power so great that it could wipe out entire cities in an instant - and there was no going back from this.
He glanced back at his crew: Ferebee and Van Kirk; Beahan and Caron; Taylor and Ashworth; Jacob Beser; Theodore Van Kirk; Richard Nelson; Wyatt Duzenbury; Joseph Stiborik; Robert Shumard; William Barney and Richard Nelson.
They were all trained professionals, but he could see the shock and disbelief in their eyes. They had known what this bomb was capable of, but seeing it in action was something else entirely.
As the plane made its way back to base, Tibbets couldn't help but think about the man who had made all of this possible: J. Robert Oppenheimer.
He remembered meeting Oppenheimer for the first time - a brilliant physicist with a vision of harnessing the power of the atom. He had been captivated by the man's enthusiasm and charisma, and he had agreed to lead this top-secret mission without hesitation.
But now... now that he had seen what this bomb could do... he wondered if it was all worth it.
Tibbets found himself thinking about Oppenheimer's words after the first successful test of the bomb: "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds."
At the time, he hadn't fully understood what Oppenheimer meant. But now... now that he had witnessed firsthand the devastation caused by this new weapon... he thought he might have an inkling.
As the Enola Gay touched down on Tinian Island, Tibbets felt a strange mix of emotions. Relief, certainly - they had accomplished their mission and made it back safely - but also something else.
Regret, maybe? Remorse? He wasn't sure how to put it into words. All he knew was that dropping that bomb had changed him in ways that he couldn't yet fully comprehend.
As Tibbets climbed out of the cockpit and onto the tarmac, a sense of weariness washed over him. He looked up at the sky above - so blue and peaceful - and wondered how long it would be before they would have to do something like this again.
And as he walked away from his plane, leaving behind the wreckage of a city and the ashes of its people, he couldn't shake the feeling that they had opened a door that could never be closed.
