Oli's Revolution
·
Published 5/25/2023Spirited middle-schooler Oli rallies her classmates against an oppressive school administration in China's rapidly-evolving future, proving that unlikely friendships, daring adventures, and courage can be used to challenge the status quo and fight for an equitable education system.

"I'll be late for my class if you keep dicking around!"
A student at West High, Oli was very familiar with the situation. She had been through a lot of teachers who couldn't stand students who were late to class. Usually, she could just dodge the teacher and get to her seat, but today it didn't work. The teacher in question had blocked the door and continued staring at her.
*sigh* I wonder why he's being so aggressive today... He has a really bad temper too.. Not like I can blame him though.. I guess this is what they call "burn out". Heh, it's funny how people continue to assume that teachers teach because they love teaching... Sometimes I feel like these people need to get their heads checked.
"Look, I'm really sorry about this," Oli said as she tried to avoid eye contact with the teacher. It wasn't working though; the guy was locked in on her like a hungry predator staring at its pray. "I'll just go ahead and-"
"No."
Oli stopped dead in her tracks. Why was he saying no? What was his problem? Was he trying to get them both fired? She wanted to ask him that question, but what stopped her from doing so was not the fact that she didn't want them both fired. What stopped her from doing so was the fact that she knew she wouldn't have time for that if she did ask him. Class would begin soon, and since this teacher had blocked the door, Oli would be forced to wait until the end of class.
And then there was the matter of Mr. Cai's attitude towards students late to class. If someone was more than 5 minutes late (which Oli definitely was), then they would be spending some time with Mr. Cai after school. Their punishment depended on how long they were late: 10 minutes - detention, 15 minutes - suspension, 20 minutes - expulsion... Since Oli had been standing in front of Mr Cai for over 30 seconds now (and counting), she knew she'd be getting either detention or suspension... And since this happened every other week, it wasn't even worth arguing about what punishment it'd be anymore...
Oli sighed again and waited for class to start up again before walking into the classroom and taking her seat in the back row of the room next to one of her friends (She didn't know his name). She dropped her bag onto her desk and pulled out her pencil case before turning towards her friend and asking him about their homework assignment for English class.
Meanwhile, Mr Cai walked over to his desk at the front of the classroom and began going through some paperwork that needed his attention: marking students who were late or absent *again*, grading tests/homework assignments/projects..."Why do we even bother giving these kids work?" he thought as he looked over one of Oli's tests which ended up being just as bad as expected "They don't even know how to write properly! They don't even know where comma splices are! How do these kids expect to learn anything if we don't make them do anything!? This is why their generation sucks so much!" Frustrated by his students' apparent inability to understand a simple concept like comma splices, Mr Cai angrily threw down Oli's test paper onto his desk and walked back towards his desk while mumbling something under his breath; most likely something along the lines of "god-forsaken generation".
About five minutes later, Mr Cai began calling all of his students up one by one (in alphabetical order) so they could hand in their homework assignment/test/project/whatever it was that required marking before handing back out some blank sheets of paper so they could take notes during class. However, when he got halfway through his list, he noticed something strange: One student hadn't handed in anything yet! He glanced at his list quickly once more... Yes! Her name was Oli! This wasn't good! He literally threatened every single one of his students that if anyone failed to hand in any assignments on time then they'd face serious consequences! Now he had no choice but to follow through with what he said or else everyone would be pissed off at him for not punishing them properly! He considered himself lucky that this never happened before now! What should he do!? Should he punish Oli after class or should he give her a pass!? No way! Giving her a pass would set a bad example for everyone else! He couldn't let everyone else know that once you're lazy enough you don't have to face any consequences! That would only encourage more laziness among his students! So clearly Mr Cai had no choice but punish Oli after class...
After calling out all 30+ students who handed in their work without any problems whatsoever (except for Marissa who gave him a blank sheet of paper instead of an assignment), it was finally time for Mr Cai's dreaded conversation with Oli after class... *sigh* ...He didn't want to do this... Especially not when it was happening every other week... Still though, there was nothing he could do but follow through with what he said earlier... ...*sigh* Well then, here goes nothing...
