I never thought I'd see the day.

The day after the bombs fell, I was still in Arnhem. My family had been living there for ages. Ever since my grandpa was a kid. He told me stories about how there used to be a whole other city on this side of the river, but now it's all ruins. Just like what happened to Berlin after the war.

We were all at home when we heard it. It was loudest here in our flat. We could hear the windows rattle and we could hear the whole building shake with each boom. My mum had her hands over her ears, my dad looked confused and angry, and my little sister just screamed louder than ever before. I remember staring out of our window at the patches of black smoke on the distant horizon, and wondering if we were going to die too.

But then the windows stopped rattling and the ground stopped shaking and my mum started crying tears of relief until my dad pulled her into his arms and told us everything was gonna be alright now that those fuckers had finally gotten what they deserved! The next week was spent celebrating the death of those Russian pigs and their American friends who poisoned our planet with their filthy nuclear warheads! We celebrated by locking ourselves indoors until those fucking foreigners were dead too!

Then things got kinda quiet again after a while. There wasn't any more news on TV, or radio, or anything else except for that stupid emergency broadcast signal that kept repeating "There is no danger" over and over again even though half of Europe was smoking ruins now! My mum went out to get some food one day and she never came back. We waited for her for hours in our flat but she didn't come home so we started walking towards where she usually went to get groceries, which coincidentally was also where most of the crying people seemed to have gathered around. I didn't know where my sister or dad was but I hoped they would meet me there soon because I was really scared not knowing where they were or if they were okay since we hadn't seen them since yesterday morning when my mum left for work.

When I found them later that day, there wasn't much left of them but what I did see made me cry for days afterwards until my throat grew sore from screaming every time I closed my eyes at night and saw them in my dreams. My dad was lying face down in an alleyway full of broken glass with blood slowly trickling out of his earhole while someone's leg stuck out from under a pile of rubble nearby him with nothing else visible except for an arm dangling lifelessly out of one end. That's where I found my sister too, wedged underneath some kind of metal table with her head twisted sideways with her mouth wide open like she wanted to scream something at us but couldn't anymore because she was dead. She must've been trying to follow mom outside when it happened because she was wearing her school uniform on that final day forever ago now, but never made it far enough from our flat or maybe even out the door before whatever wiped everyone else off this Earth took her too without even letting her say goodbye. And all I could think about as I stared at their bodies was wondering if this is why mom ran away from home instead of being here with us now as well like she always said she would be whenever dad got drunk and angry at us for doing dumb things like forgetting to clean up after breakfast or accidentally breaking one of his stupid plates when we tried to play catchball in our tiny living room!

I don't remember much after that except wandering around aimlessly through Arnhem looking for survivors while fighting off hunger pains and passing out a few times along the way because getting lost in that big city took up most of my energy by itself with nobody around me who knew how to help me figure out which way led back home anymore! But after a few days I finally found some other people who eventually let me join their group because they said they needed every able-bodied person they could find right now instead if leaving me behind in case something happened to them later on down the road. So instead of staying alone in Arnhem while everyone else went off together across Europe on some great adventure which sounded pretty fun to me back then because travel is awesome, I ended up helping these new friends survive against hordes of zombies roaming the countryside trying to take bites out of our flesh whenever we least expected it! Sometimes things got pretty scary so bad that even thinking about Arnhem seemed better than being present where we were now, especially during those long nights when everyone's nerves were starting to wear thin from constantly hearing sounds everywhere except nothing ever seemed real anymore so you can never tell whether you're imagining things or not anymore!

But then one day things changed again when people started saying that some big thing called "The Wall" finally kept most everything bad away forever more even though nobody knew exactly what it might be yet! They said once we got there nobody would be able to bother us again until forever more so long as we stayed inside it doing whatever we felt like talking about while ducking into stores whenever we needed stuff like cigarettes or booze or whatever else we liked! Everyone seemed excited about going there next so they decided we should all leave together as soon as possible, so off we went traveling across Europe again only backwards this time towards Germany instead until finally arriving one morning at an old railway station with all kinds of people staring at a huge gate standing tall right next to it covered in graffiti letters which said: "Wir sind das Volk!" This means "We are the people!" Only nobody knew exactly what that meant yet either but everybody looked really happy nonetheless once somebody told us everyone could go inside now whenever they wanted provided they had papers proving their citizenship first otherwise security guards might shoot bullets at you instead just because they didn't like how you looked either!

At first it seemed kinda boring living inside The Wall forever more doing whatever you felt like talking about while ducking into stores whenever you felt like buying stuff like cigarettes or booze or whatever else you liked better than anything else before although sometimes people would go outside for a walk without permission just for fun whenever nobody expected them back anytime soon! But then after a while things got crazy again sometimes when refugees started coming from other countries outside The Wall who said lots of stuff about how much worse it was outside compared to inside but nobody believed them because everyone inside The Wall knew exactly what it meant living here forever more doing whatever you felt like talking about while ducking into stores whenever you felt like buying stuff like cigarettes or booze or whatever else you liked better than anything else before without anyone bothering you too much ever again wherever you wanted to go so long as you stayed inside The Wall forever more doing whatever you felt like talking about while ducking into stores whenever you felt like buying stuff like cigarettes or booze or whatever else you liked better than anything else before because that's how life became once everything outside became bad again so bad every single person still alive agreed life was pretty good living here forever more doing whatever you felt like talking about while ducking into stores whenever you felt like buying stuff like cigarettes or booze or whatever else you liked better than anything else before until one day when everything started feeling wrong again somewhere near Germany suddenly because something outside The Wall destroyed half Europe overnight so completely millions died horrible deaths everywhere while millions more fled back inside The Wall hoping deep down everyone still alive would be safe forever more doing whatever you felt like talking about while ducking into stores whenever you felt like buying stuff like cigarettes or booze or whatever else you liked better than anything else before once everything bad disappeared across Europe again leaving behind nothing but burning ruins everywhere once again just like the war before except only worse without anyone knowing why yet!
