Echoes of the Heart
·
Published 6/26/2023In a perilous stone-age world, where danger lurks at every turn, stoic warrior Henry and intuitive healer Alex join forces to unravel the mystery of a mythical creature hidden deep within the woods. As their physical and emotional limits are tested, their unexpected bond transforms into a forbidden love, adding a tender twist to their mission. Will the revelation of their feelings for each other become their greatest strength or their ultimate downfall as they face insurmountable odds?

It was a warm day, and the light breeze that blew through the jungle canopy was a welcome respite from the heat of the sun.
Alex sat on a fallen tree, his feet propped up on another log and his spear resting against the trunk of yet another downed tree. He stared out into the green expanse of forest that stretched as far as he could see, in both directions.
“I hate this,” he said to himself, pulling off his shirt and wiping his brow with it. “What even is this beast we’re looking for?”
He sighed, then glanced behind him at Henry who was sitting on the ground at the base of a large tree. The two had been travelling for weeks now, since they had entered this strange land of stone buildings and metal tools. Their village had called this place ‘America’, which made no sense to Alex. A man named Richard had explained to them that America was just a name for their home, but Alex still didn’t understand why they would call it something so ridiculous.
Henry looked over at Alex and smiled when he saw his friend staring at him. He waved with one hand while pinching some meat off one of the roasting rats that hung by his side on a stick.
Alex shook his head and smiled back before turning back to face the jungle again. Something rustled nearby in the undergrowth, then he heard what sounded like a bird cawing above him. He looked up and saw several large birds soaring through the canopy above him. They were unlike any bird he had ever seen before; they were much larger than any bird he knew of in his village, and their feathers were bright red, white, yellow and blue in a strange pattern across their bodies. As they flew overhead they let out loud shrieks that echoed through the trees.
A high-pitched noise suddenly filled Alex’s ears and he felt dizzy all of a sudden as everything around him seemed to blur together in a strange haze. He blinked hard several times as he tried to clear his vision, but nothing changed and everything remained fuzzy until suddenly everything went completely black for a moment before returning to normal again.
Alex blinked again several times before looking around puzzledly. Everything seemed different somehow; instead of the jungle canopy ahead of him there was now an open field stretching out in front of him with tall grass swaying gently in the wind along with several small trees scattered throughout it, but none as large as what he usually saw in this place they called America.
“Where are we?” asked Alex quietly to himself, looking around more confused than before. He stood up and picked up his spear before scanning around, searching for anything unusual that could have brought them here instead of just witnessing something new in this new land like usual whenever they travelled through America. That was when he noticed Henry standing next to him wearing nothing but his loincloth. Alex looked over at Henry who just smiled at him slightly before walking towards him slowly with a hand held out towards Alex expectantly .
Alex reached out and took Henry's hand, the confusion and uncertainty still etched across his face. His fingers intertwined with Henry's, grounding him in this strange new landscape. The field stretched out endlessly in front of them, bathed in the soft glow of the setting sun. The air was crisp, carrying the faint scent of wildflowers. It was a stark contrast to the dense jungle they had grown accustomed to.
"Where do you think we are?" Alex asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Henry shrugged, his eyes scanning the vast expanse before them. "I don't know, but it's beautiful, isn't it? It feels...different."
As they cautiously ventured further into the field, their footsteps creating a gentle rhythm in the quietness, Alex noticed something peculiar in the distance. A solitary figure stood beneath a towering oak tree, their back hunched and their hands clasped behind them. The figure appeared ethereal, swathed in a flowing garment that billowed in the wind.
"Who could that be?" Alex wondered out loud, his grip on Henry's hand tightening.
With a curious and inexplicable pull, they moved closer to the figure. As they approached, they realized it was a woman, her long silver hair cascading down her back. Her face was turned away, hidden from their view.
"Excuse me, miss?" Alex called out tentatively, his curiosity outweighing his urge to turn back.
The woman turned slowly, her eyes holding a depth and wisdom that seemed to reach into their souls. Her voice, when she spoke, was like a whisper on the wind.
"Welcome, travelers," she greeted them, her voice a soothing melody. "You have stumbled upon the Threshold of Time, where past and present intertwine."
Alex and Henry exchanged bewildered glances, their minds struggling to comprehend her words. Sensing their confusion, the woman smiled gently.
"Fear not, for you are granted passage through the corridors of the ages. Embrace the journey that lies ahead."
With a single wave of her hand, the field around them seemed to shimmer, dissolving like gossamer threads. In its place emerged a bustling cityscape, vibrant with life and pulsating with energy. The clatter of horses' hooves, the hum of conversations, and the scent of spices danced through the air.
"Behold," the woman whispered, her voice filled with ancient secrets. "Welcome to the heart of a forgotten empire."
As the sight unfolded before them, Alex and Henry found themselves immersed in a world of grand palaces, opulent gardens, and towering temples. They explored narrow alleyways and bustling market squares, their senses intoxicated by the vibrant colors and exotic aromas that surrounded them. The people they encountered wore elaborate robes, their heads adorned with intricate headdresses. They spoke in a language that Alex and Henry couldn't understand, yet somehow, they felt a connection.
Days turned into weeks as the two friends delved deeper into this forgotten empire, learning its customs, traditions, and stories. They became ensnared in the political intrigues and the enchantment of a world lost to time. They met scholars and artisans, fierce warriors and benevolent rulers, discovering a truth that transcended the boundaries of their own existence.
But amidst the grandeur, amidst the spectacle of a forgotten past, a yearning began to grow within them. A longing for home, for the familiar comforts of their village and the sense of belonging they had left behind. The woman's words echoed in their minds, guiding their steps even as they yearned for closure.
And so, as the sun began its descent on the fading empire, Alex and Henry stood at the threshold once more, staring into the shimmering void that lay beyond.
"Do we go back?" Henry asked, his voice tinged with nostalgia and longing.
Alex turned to his friend, his heart heavy with conflicting emotions. "As much as I've treasured this journey, Henry, I think it's time. Our village, our people...they need us."
With a nod of understanding, they stepped forward, the Threshold of Time embracing them once more. The world shifted and swirled, the grand empire dissolving into fleeting fragments of memory. And as the disorienting darkness engulfed them, they clutched each other's hands, their passage through time and space unraveling before their very eyes.
When the darkness receded, they found themselves back in the familiar jungle, the vibrant hues of America welcoming them home. The fallen tree they had sat on lay before them, as if time had never passed. And yet, in their hearts, they carried the whispers of another time, another world, forever entwined with their own.
Hand in hand, they ventured back into the jungle, the warmth of the sun and the rustling of leaves accompanying their every step. And as they journeyed on, they knew that the Threshold of Time would always be there, waiting patiently for the travelers who dared to open their hearts to the mysteries of the past.
