Blindly Persistent: Hailey's Stand Up Comedy Adventure
·
Published 5/31/2023Hailey, a rebellious and resilient 21-year-old Japanese girl with Cerebral Palsy, uses her wit and extraordinary mission to climb from obscurity to extraordinary VIP status as an unlikely stand-up comedian in medieval Japan, disregarding stereotypes and upending the status quo.

The sun beat down on my shoulders, and the back of my neck stung. I could hardly feel the cool breeze that blew across my skin. I looked up at the old oak tree that stood in front of me. It was a beautiful day. The forest was full of birdsong and bright flowers, but all I could see was grey shadows and spots dancing in front of me. I took off my sunglasses and rubbed my eyes, but nothing changed.
"How am I supposed to carry all this wood back by myself?"
I set down the big logs with a heavy sigh and covered my face with my hands. My stomach growled and I realized it had been more than two days since I'd eaten anything aside from dry rice cakes. Taking out the last ones, I ate them as quickly as possible, then opened my mouth for more water from the small bottle I carried around. It was empty.
I sighed again, turned away from the tree, and started to make my way back through the forest, leaning heavily on my cane to keep me stable as I walked over the uneven ground. Before long, I reached the river where I had left my boat tied up to a rock under some trees. Fishing would have been nice, but there wasn't much food in the woods these days, so whatever fish were in the river would be safer where they were than if they wound up in a fox's belly. It would have been better if there were any fish in the first place...but there weren't. When you're hungry enough you'll catch anything though, even if it's just a frog or something else you'd normally throw right back into your water source because you don't want it getting into your pot either.
I got into my boat and rowed across to shore before pulling it up onto land and making sure to tie it down solidly so it wouldn't float away while I slept under a tree nearby. Then I sat down with my back against a big boulder and put my sunglasses back on before closing my eyes briefly to rest them from staring at nothing all day without them on. With darkness surrounding me once again, I felt asleep easily and dreamed of sashimi in soba sauce---the best way to eat raw fish for anyone who really loves sushi!
"Where is that girl?"
A woman's voice woke me up from my dream a few hours later when she shouted at someone behind her in an annoyed tone, "She's not here yet," she said as she began walking over towards me as well as turning to look behind her at whoever had spoken to her earlier. "If you must know she went out fishing." She leaned down next to me, "Hailey," she called softly until I woke up enough to take off my sunglasses again, "Are you alright? You look tired."
"Oh...yeah..." I muttered sleepily before standing up slowly. "I just haven't eaten very much lately." A smile crept across her face as she reached into her kimono sleeves and drew out what looked like a pair of chopsticks tied together with red string around their middle before handing them to me carefully.
