Emotions Unleashed: A Surreal Journey
·
Published 1/17/2023A reckless group of American students unleash forces beyond their control when they enter an enchanting portal to an alternate reality, playinggames with emotions and risking losing themselves to the power of their own hubris.
The once quaint town of Denton, Texas was now little more than a war zone. Buildings were in ruins, the streets filled with puddles of blood, and fires raged all around us. The sky was black with smoke, the sun barely visible behind it.
A chill came over me as I ran through the streets, trying to find my friends. We had been at the party, celebrating the end of our first year in college. Then, out of nowhere, everything went crazy. People started yelling, crying, and screaming. A crashing sound tore through the air. Glass shattered. Chairs toppled over. The ground shook. Then silence.
I made it to the edge of the town, and into what used to be the city park. There, in the midst of the rubble, was my friend Emily. She was covered in blood. Her eyes were wide. She looked like she was in shock.
"Emily! Are you okay?" I asked.
She turned her head slowly toward me, her eyes still wide. "Amelia!" she said, then screamed, "They're here! They're here!"
"Who's here?" I asked.
A loud shrieking sound came from behind me, sending chills down my spine. It sounded like a thousand voices crying out in terror. Suddenly, a wave of darkness washed over me. I could see nothing, but felt a great weight land on top of me.
"Get off of me!" I yelled. I pushed against whatever was on top of me, but it wouldn't move. I felt a sharp pain in my ankle, then another in my stomach.
"GET OFF OF HER!" I heard Emily scream.
I felt the weight lift from my body. I took a deep breath and looked up. In front of me stood Emily, her face twisted in rage, staring down at two large shadows that lay on the ground.
"You are not welcome here," she said. "You are not wanted. You are not safe. Leave this place."
The shadows writhed on the ground, and I heard a dozen voices cry out in terror. They moved away.
Emily turned to me and said, "Are you okay?"
I struggled to get to my feet, but my ankle wouldn't take my weight. "I think I sprained my ankle or something. What the hell just happened?"
"Let me see," Emily said. She knelt down and gently rubbed my foot. "This is going to hurt," she said as she snapped my ankle back into place.
I yelped, but the pain subsided quickly, and I felt no trace of a sprain.
"Thanks, I think I'll be okay now."
As I began to walk, I suddenly noticed a large pile of rubble in front of us. "Wait a minute," I said, "that wasn't here before."
"No, it wasn't."
I looked around. "What did we do while we were asleep? Because this looks like a war zone."
Emily shrugged. "I don't know. I mean, we were asleep. We didn't do this. Look at us."
I looked down at our clothes. They were covered in dust and grime. Emily's hair was disheveled, and her makeup was smeared. My clothes weren't much better.
"This isn't how we went to sleep," Emily said. "It's like we were in some kind of fight, but we weren't fighting. We were just sleeping."
I looked down and noticed a small piece of white paper stuck to the bottom of my shoe. I bent down and picked it up, then opened it up.
"What does it say?" Emily asked.
"It says, 'If you are reading this, then congratulations. You have passed the test.'"
"What kind of test?" Emily asked.
"No idea."
Emily looked down at the ground and pointed to a spot near her feet. "Look, there's another one."
I bent down and picked it up. "Same thing," I said.
Emily walked around the area and found five more pieces of paper scattered around us. I found one more.
"It's addressed to you," Emily said.
I looked at the paper she handed me. It had my name on it: Amelia. Then I read the note:
Dear Amelia,
Congratulations on passing. You will notice that you are now in a different world. You will also notice that you have the power to shape your world through your emotions. This can be a great gift and a great burden, but never forget that you must use caution. Your emotions may be powerful, but they are not unlimited. If you give in to fear, rage, or hate, you may find yourself drawn into the darkness that you sought to destroy. If you are strong, and if you work together, you will be able to return to your world. Please be careful, and remember: only you can shape your world.
Sincerely,
The Shadow King
"That's creepy," Emily said. "I mean, my God! We were asleep, and we somehow managed to save the world?"
