Miria's Momentous Steps
·
Published 5/14/2023In 4th century New Zealand, Miria bravely faces off against an encroaching wuxia culture to protect her newborn son Ailin, and must use her eloquent writing to courageously find her way to a secure future, even while engaging in the seemingly mundane tasks of parenting - like changing diapers while pausing briefly for her son to breastfeed.

"Where are you taking me, father?"
Ailin was a curious child. He liked to know everything about the world around him and how it worked. As such he would often question his mother.
"Why is the sun bright? What makes water wet? When will the stars fall down?"
Miria would usually have an answer for him. She had spent most of her life learning and studying in the name of knowledge. Her pursuit had taken her far beyond their village and into lands unknown to most. The things she had seen were mostly wondrous, but some things were terrible and monstrous.
But this time she didn't know the answer.
"I don't know, Ailin." She replied, as she led him through a thicket of trees, "My master told me to take you to a place where danger lurks in plain sight."
"What's danger?" Ailin asked, "Is it like when I swallowed a stone? Is that what you mean?"
"Yes," Miria said solemnly, "It's something like that."
They were in a field now, with tall grass rippling in the wind. Nearby stood a large tree with twisted roots that formed almost like arms reaching out from under the soil. Miria approached it cautiously at first, but then walked right up to it as if nothing was wrong.
"What are we doing here?" Ailin asked as he pointed at the tree and squinted his eyes, "I don't see any danger."
Miria stopped before the tree and bowed her head slightly to it. Then she looked at Ailin with a serious expression on her face and said, "Just wait here and keep silent while I do something."
"Okay," Ailin answered, seeming more intrigued now than afraid.
Miria walked up to the tree again and placed her hand on one of its twisted roots. She closed her eyes for a moment and then spoke softly: "I'm here now."
