Anna Vampwick and the Shocking Slasher
·
Published 3/17/2023In a fight against a deadly slasher preying upon her campus, 19 year-old Anna Vampwick, a complex, determined young woman determined to right an oppressive system seeks justice--but can she uncover her past in time to save them all?
I'm not a wimp. I've taken some hits in my time. Maybe it's because I'm a girl, maybe it's because I'm short, maybe it's because I don't hit back, maybe it's because my mom taught me never to throw the first punch. But I can take a hit.
I can also give one out.
That's what makes this whole thing so frustrating. I'll tell you what frustrates me - being told by some asshole that he's got a rule and that if you break that rule, you're out of his club forever and no one else will have you. That, right there, is frustrating as hell.
Rule number one: keep your fucking hands to yourself. Rule number two: don't drink out of anyone else's drink unless you ask them first. And those are just the big ones! There's at least ten more rules that we have to follow or else someone could get hurt - if not from getting slapped, then from being ostracized or whatever the fuck they do to get rid of people who piss them off (that one has never been made clear).
But this guy - this guy who hates me for some reason - he doesn't even pretend these rules mean anything to him anymore. He breaks rule number one all the time, and anyone who tries to stop him gets shoved around like a rag doll before everyone else comes in to calm things down and make sure the situation doesn't spiral out of control (and trust me - they always do). And he breaks rule number two all the time too! Sometimes he'll walk up to someone and - just like that - steal their drink right before they can take a sip! Or sometimes he'll take a dude's drink right after he takes a sip! And believe me when I say this - these guys are pissed! They're pissed because they're not supposed to be drinking underage, but the vast majority of them have already decided that the loss of their fake IDs was totally worth going out tonight with this weird group of people who seem so much cooler than their boring old friends back home.
And now here we are at yet another party, fighting over drinks on the floor instead of talking about our majors or what we want to do with our lives or anything like that for God knows how long, when suddenly out of nowhere this random girl walks up next to us with a full cup in her hand (which she stole from somewhere). She looks at me for a second before saying "I know you."
What? What does she mean? How? Do I know her? Did we go to high school together? Did we meet at the grocery store once? Did we play on the same soccer team? What did she mean "I know you"? Did she know someone else named Anna Vampwick who went to her high school? Is she confusing me for someone else? Did she see me on TV once and think "Ah yes! That woman looks very familiar!"? Who is this girl!? What was she talking about!? It was almost as if... as if...
"I know you," she said again. "I know why you're doing this."
"Doing what!?" I asked nervously, still trying to figure out where I knew her from. My mind raced through all my memories but nothing seemed familiar until - wait! Those eyes! Those eyes are familiar! Those eyes look just like... but no... no way...
"You're not happy," she said simply, as if it were obvious. "You've been waiting for something your entire life, but it never seems close enough to reach." With each word she spoke, she edged closer and closer until finally we stood face-to-face only inches away from each other. It looked like she was holding back tears while making eye contact with me - looking at me so deeply that it made my stomach feel funny inside while staring into the most beautiful pair of green eyes I had ever seen in my life.
