Mei Lin was startled awake by the shouting of a child. Looking out, she saw a little boy running down the road towards her, yelling at the top of his lungs.
"The village has been taken! The demons have attacked!"
She quickly jumped out of bed and started to get dressed. "Get your weapons," she called to her companion, Ling. "The village is under attack." She ran over to a table, where several long wooden boards sat on top of each other like a tower. She took off a lid, revealing several scrolls and books inside. She grabbed the one at the bottom and carefully unrolled it onto the table. Ling came over and looked at it with curiosity. "Is that..." he began.
"Yes," Mei Lin replied, "It's an ancient language that only my family knows how to read and write."
She pointed to a word in the middle of the page, which said: 'Demon'.
"If we can find out what this demons' weakness is, we may be able to kill them," she said with excitement. She grabbed another book from inside the container and opened it up on top of the other one. On page after page was written: 'weakness of demon'.
Ling peered closer into the book. "There are so many different versions," he commented wryly, looking up at Mei Lin's face as she studied the pages intently. "Everyone who wrote this seems to think they knew exactly what demon's weakness was." He sighed and went back to studying the scroll on top, scanning for any useful information. After flipping through it for a few moments, he found something that caught his eye and showed it to Mei Lin. "Here's something interesting," he said as he pointed to a part near the bottom of the page that had writing on it: 'demon's weakness only lasts for three days.' At that moment, realization dawned upon them both and they turned their gazes to each other simultaneously with large grins stretched across their faces. It wasn't long before they broke out into laughter as they embraced each other tightly in celebration for finding out about its weakness. They were unable to contain their happiness even when they heard crashing noises coming from outside of Mei Lin's house. They turned their heads towards the noise and looked at each other nervously. "I don't think we have time to figure out what their weakness is," Mei Lin said quietly as she looked at her house shaking from side to side violently while she clung onto Ling tightly with fear racing through her veins like wildfire. Suddenly, a deafening growl cut through the air causing both of them to jump backwards in fright while covering their ears tightly with their hands. A large red demon appeared through Mei Lin's front door pushing her house away effortlessly as if it were made of paper dolls instead of bricks and wood boards holding together walls and ceilings together. It was twice as tall as most men and had horns protruding from its head while fangs protruded menacingly from its mouth showing them just how sharp they were by snarling ferociously at them while saliva dripped down from them onto its chin. The demon sneered viciously at them evilly before lunging towards them with incredible speed causing both Mei Lin and Ling to scream in terror as they backed away further against Mei Lin's wall which caused her bookshelf above them to topple over onto them crushing them underneath piles of books until all you could see were two heads barely peeking out from underneath all of those books staring up at that horrible creature that had just tried to kill them both with horror-stricken eyes filled with tears standing perfectly still unable to move because of shock until all you could hear were two pairs of bodies let out quiet whimpers then nothing but silence once again filled with dread as everyone else stood frozen in place watching this horrific scene unfold in front of their very eyes waiting for someone else to do something while they pondered who should die first? All except one person since everyone is panicking trying desperately not be eaten by that beastly creature while they considered using their last remaining breath to say goodbye to their loved ones before dying in fear thinking it would be better than being eaten alive by that hideous monster standing right there in front of you not more than ten feet away ready to tear you apart piece by piece starting with your legs then arms then torso then finally your head all while watching your life drain away before your very eyes feeling pain unbearable pain until you blacked out and died hopefully peacefully with no suffering whatsoever which wouldn't be possible considering everything I just described would probably take mere minutes instead of hours or days or weeks or months etcetera etcetera...
With trembling hands, Mei Lin and Ling slowly crawled out from underneath the pile of books, their bodies bruised and sore. The sight of the demon still standing before them sent shivers down their spines, but they couldn't afford to cower in fear. They had stumbled upon the demon's weakness, and now they had to gather their courage and use it.
"Remember, its weakness only lasts for three days," Ling reminded Mei Lin as they stood up, wiping the dust off their clothes. "We have to act quickly."
Without hesitation, Mei Lin reached for her weapons—two sharp daggers—and handed one to Ling. The weight of the weapon felt reassuring in her grip, a reminder that she wasn't alone in this fight. They locked eyes, resolve burning within them, as they took a decisive step forward.
The demon's eyes glowed red with malice as it lunged towards them once again. Mei Lin and Ling dodged its attack with nimble footwork, their movements precise and synchronized. They had studied countless martial arts techniques and trained relentlessly for moments like this. Their bodies moved with a fluidity that surprised even themselves, as if they were attuned to each other's thoughts.
With a swift motion, Mei Lin thrust her dagger towards the demon's abdomen, aiming for its weak spot. The demon howled in agony as the blade sank into its flesh, black smoke escaping from the wound. Ling followed suit, driving his dagger deep into the demon's shoulder. The creature roared, its strength wavering as it struggled to fight back.
Mei Lin and Ling didn't let up, launching a relentless assault on the demon. They weaved in and out of its attacks, their blades finding their mark with deadly accuracy. The demon's body weakened with each blow, the black smoke billowing from its wounds growing thicker. Mei Lin's heart pounded in her chest, the thrill of battle coursing through her veins. She had trained her whole life for this moment—to protect her village, to vanquish the darkness.
But just as victory seemed within their grasp, the demon let out a blood-curdling scream. Its body convulsed, its grotesque form contorting. Mei Lin and Ling watched in horror as the creature morphed into something entirely different, shedding its demonic guise to reveal a small, innocent-looking boy.
The transformation left Mei Lin and Ling stunned, their blades hesitating in the air. They saw the fear in the child's eyes, the confusion etched on his face. Slowly, Mei Lin lowered her dagger, followed by Ling, as they realized the true nature of their enemy.
"What have we done?" Mei Lin whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "We attacked a child."
Ling's voice wavered with remorse. "We were blinded by our mission, by our desire to save our village. We didn't stop to question who or what we were fighting against."
The child, trembling and sobbing, curled up in a corner. A surge of guilt washed over Mei Lin and Ling, their hearts heavy with regret. They had become the monsters they sought to vanquish.
Kneeling down in front of the child, Mei Lin spoke in a soothing voice. "We are deeply sorry for what we've done. We did not know the truth. Can you find it in your heart to forgive us?"
The child looked up at her, his eyes filled with a mix of sadness and forgiveness. "I... I forgive you," he stammered.
Touched by his forgiveness, Mei Lin and Ling vowed to protect him, to make amends for their mistake. Together, they would search for a way to break the curse that had transformed the child into a demon, to restore him back to his true form.
Their journey would be long and arduous, filled with challenges and sacrifices. But as Mei Lin and Ling stood up, the weight of their guilt transforming into determination, they knew they couldn't give up. The true battle had just begun—to find redemption and to protect the ones they loved.
With renewed purpose, they embarked on their quest, leaving behind the wreckage of their once peaceful village. The road ahead was uncertain, but they were prepared to face whatever trials awaited them. For Mei Lin and Ling, it was no longer just about defeating demons but also about confronting the demons within themselves. And in the darkness, they would strive to find the light, clinging onto hope and the belief that redemption was possible, even in the most unlikely of places.
