Jesse huddled against the biting wind, his fingers numb as he tried to light a cigarette. The lighter flame flickered and died, mocking him. He swore under his breath and shoved the lighter back into his pocket.
"Need a light?" a voice called from the shadows.
Jesse looked up, squinting against the snowfall. A figure stood on the other side of the street, their face obscured by the hood of their parka. Jesse hesitated for a moment before crossing over.
"Thanks," he said as he took the proffered flame. He cupped his hands around it, finally managing to light his cigarette.
"No problem," the stranger replied. "It's a cold night to be out here."
"Yeah, well... I'm used to it," Jesse said with a shrug.
The stranger nodded and fell into silence as Jesse smoked his cigarette. The snow continued to fall in thick flakes, blanketing the city in white.
"What brings you out here tonight?" Jesse asked after a while, curiosity getting the better of him.
"Just passing through," the stranger replied cryptically.
Jesse raised an eyebrow but didn't press further. He finished his cigarette and flicked it into the street.
"Well, thanks again for the light," he said awkwardly, unsure of what else to say.
"No problem," the stranger repeated with a small smile. "Stay safe out here."
With that, they turned and walked away, disappearing into the falling snow. Jesse watched them go before shaking off his unease and continuing on his way.
As he trudged through the snow towards his dingy apartment building, Jesse couldn't shake off thoughts of the mysterious stranger. There was something about them that had piqued his interest - an air of mystery and danger that intrigued him. He pushed open the door to his building and climbed up to his floor, still mulling over the encounter.
Inside his apartment, Jesse stripped off his wet clothes and collapsed onto the couch. He closed his eyes, trying to banish thoughts of the stranger from his mind. But no matter how hard he tried, their face kept appearing behind his eyelids.
"Fuck it," he muttered, giving in to temptation. He pulled out his phone and searched through the contacts until he found the number he was looking for.
"Maya," he said when she picked up. "I need to see you."
The line was silent for a moment before Maya replied, "Where are you?"
Jesse gave her his address and hung up. He stared at the phone in his hand, wondering what he had just gotten himself into.
A knock on the door interrupted Jesse's thoughts. He got up and opened it to find Maya standing there, her hood pulled up against the snow.
"You wanted to see me?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Yeah," Jesse said with a nod. "Come in."
Maya stepped inside and shrugged off her parka, revealing a slim figure clad in black. She looked around the apartment with a critical eye before turning back to Jesse.
"What did you want?" she asked again.
"I... I don't know," Jesse admitted. "I couldn't stop thinking about you."
Maya's lips quirked into a small smile. "Is that so?"
"Yeah," Jesse said with a shrug. "There's something about you... Something different."
Maya studied him for a moment before replying, "I could say the same about you."
Jesse raised an eyebrow in question, but Maya didn't elaborate further.
"So what now?" he asked instead.
"Now we wait," Maya said cryptically.
"For what?" Jesse pressed.
"For them to find us," Maya replied with a grim smile.
