'The Unusual Housemates of Mary'
·
Published 3/29/2023When shy, introspective Mary accidentally inherits a motley group of talking housemates, led by an anthropomorphic toaster, she must rise to the challenge of protecting their newfound freedom, friendship, and a place in her small mountain town against all odds.
She was a beautiful girl, with long, golden hair and big, green eyes that took in all the world.
She lived in a small house up on the mountain, her parents had left her alone to watch over the place.
They said they were going on a trip to visit their old friend, but never returned. Mary was also scared of people finding out about the animals she kept at home. She cared for them as well as she could, but one of them was having some trouble. It was getting sicker every day and needed a doctor.
Luckily, there was one in town, who would be able to help her little friends. At least, that's what she thought.
When she arrived at the doctor's office, he looked at her like she was insane when she told him about this "house" full of animals that needed his help. He had just given her an appointment for next week and told her to stay away from any strange houses in the mean time. She left the office quite disappointed and walked down the street towards her home in tears.
She had been walking for a while when it dawned on her that maybe he didn't understand what she was saying so loud. After all, most animals can't talk and people don't like strange things very much. So she decided to try again in a more quiet voice and whispered to herself: "I've got an injured animal at home."
Suddenly, a small voice behind her replied: "That's awful! I'm sure he'll love you!"
Mary turned around and saw a small mouse looking up at her with big, blue eyes from up on top of an ice cream cone: "Aww... Don't cry young lady!"
She stopped crying and looked down at the mouse confused: "How did you know my name?"
The mouse smiled back at her: "Oh I heard it from your friend when he left here earlier today."
The girl gasped: "You mean... You're talking?"
The mouse nodded and said: "Yes indeed! I'm talking! Would you like me to show you how special I am?"
Mary nodded eagerly while the mouse jumped off of his cone and started running around everywhere holding his arms out like airplane wings: "Look, look! I can fly! I can fly!"
The girl giggled and then suddenly remembered why she was here in the first place: "Um... Could you please help me find my way home? My dog is sick."
The mouse stopped running around immediately and asked earnestly: "Oh no! Why didn't you say so earlier? We have to hurry before it's too late!"
Mary smiled gratefully and started walking faster up the road towards home with the mouse following close behind her, until he asked again: "What kind of dog is it?"
She turned around surprised: "You want to meet my dog too?"
The little creature nodded eagerly again as they continued their journey up the mountain side together. They talked about dogs mostly until they reached Mary's house where they found nothing but an empty bed upstairs and an overturned kitchen table downstairs. She sat down on the couch sobbing loudly while the mouse listened calmly until it finally ventured to ask: "What happened here?"
When Mary finally calmed down enough to tell him what happened yesterday and how worried she was now because of all this mess downstairs and how much time had passed since she went out looking for help, he started pacing back and forth across the floor trying to think of what they should do next. Suddenly he stopped dead in his tracks with his mouth hanging open slightly as if he had just figured something out. His eyes lit up with excitement as he grabbed Mary by both shoulders and said hurriedly: "We need to go get your dog some help!"
Again Mary nodded excitedly when suddenly something outside caught their attention beyond the window curtain. A shadow passing by quickly almost invisible due to its speed darted into view for just a second only before disappearing again outside behind some bushes along with two men carrying rifles on their shoulder moving fast towards her house. Her heart skipped a beat as panic set in. She started thinking quickly about hiding somewhere inside but there wasn't anywhere where they wouldn't find her eventually so instead she decided that there must be some other way out of this mess besides being shot by those two guys who were most likely armed robbers or worse considering how fast they were moving right now towards her house without making any noise whatsoever leaving just a tiny cloud of dust behind them in their wake as they made their way toward this place without stopping once even once while still wearing those masks hiding their whole faces underneath making them look almost inhuman or robotic standing out among all those trees like this with those rifles slung over their shoulders looking ready for whatever trouble may come ahead of them down this path that led nowhere except straight into Mary's front yard surrounded by tall trees giving them no choice but to continue forward like they did wherever they came from in order not to be noticed by anyone else around here who might call 911 or get involved in this mess themselves otherwise wondering why those two men were prowling around these parts dressed like that in such unusual clothing making no noise whatsoever other than their footsteps not even bothering themselves looking around at anything let alone breaking into someone's home so aggressively like all those other criminals did before who usually never moved this fast unless there was something worth stealing inside which usually never took them more than a few minutes if not seconds so whatever could these two guys possibly want here? Either way she knew there was no time left for any further thoughts or questions because sooner or later those two men would be through that front door ready either to steal everything they could find inside or shoot whoever got in their way while that stupid little mouse probably stood there frozen waiting patiently above all else sitting on top of an ice-cream cone right there by her feet looking probably pretty helpless against these two heavily armed intruders prepared to kill anyone who ever got in their way regardless of whether that person posed any threat or not which meant SHE might be next if she didn't get out of there soon enough which meant NOW before it was too late already leaving only one real option left besides getting herself killed here waiting for whatever fate might bring which meant getting out through that broken window behind her lying flat on the ground crawling slowly without making any noise whatsoever under that bush just barely visible through that thin layer of green leaves making sure not to leave any trace behind otherwise risking being spotted by those two men standing right outside peering inside carefully worrying about whoever might be hiding inside waiting for them hoping it wasn't too late already because time was running out fast now barely able anymore to see what those masked intruders would do next pulling out both guns pointing them inside through those glass windows searching everywhere searching everything thoroughly without noticing anything except their own reflection staring back at them while Mary crawled further away into safety hoping it would buy her enough time so maybe someday when everything calmed down again maybe then somehow something good would eventually happen eventually allowing life itself finally taking over once again until another crime like this one occurred somewhere else causing another dangerous situation where normal people wouldn't feel safe anymore knowing somehow deep inside themselves under all those layers subconsciously buried underneath each individual human being living freely breathing deeply wondering about life itself deeper than all others living peacefully oblivious covering up their fears protecting their hearts racing too fast running faster than anyone else making mistakes paying bigger prices dying young not leaving much behind except memories fading away sometimes becoming nothing remembering only fragments instead memories fragments memories fragments memories fragments memory fragments memory fragments memory fragments memory fragments memory fragments memory fragments memory fragments memory fragments memory fragments memory fragments memory fragments memory fragments memory fragments memory fragments memory fragments memory fragments memory fragments - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -\m|_|_|> * | * | * [ * ] * [ * ] * \m/ (Mary)* !
