A goat, the size of a pony, was staring at them with its beady eyes. They had been hiking for hours on end and were tired, hungry and thirsty. The goat had been lazily chewing grass and hadn't looked up at them despite the loud crunching of their footsteps on the dry soil.
"How are we supposed to get food out of that tiny thing?" Sarah asked in a whisper. "Are we even allowed to eat it?"
"What do you mean? This is an herbivore. It eats plants. Of course we can eat it! These are some of the most delicious meat you will ever taste!" Jonas smiled tiredly at her.
Sarah eyed the creature skeptically, but hunger took over and she unslung her rucksack from her shoulders to rummage through it for a knife. Ian walked over to the goat and as he approached it looked up from its grazing, ears flicking backwards, eyes wide with fear. It bleated loudly and began running away from them, kicking up clouds of dust as it went. He gave chase to it for a minute or so until he managed to catch up with it and grabbed the lead around its neck to pull it down onto its back. The animal struggled violently but he held on tight and soon it stopped moving altogether. Sarah was already cutting into its belly with a big folding knife she had bought in London before they left on their expedition. She giggled nervously when she turned around again while wiping blood off her hands with a handkerchief.
Over the next half hour they ate their fill, throwing scraps away into the desert where they left their own footprints behind them like breadcrumbs marking their path back home. As they sat back against rocks chewing on strips of roast goat meat fresh from the fire Sarah suddenly started giggling again.
"What's so funny?" Jonas said with his mouth full of bread, his hands still covered in blood from butchering the animal earlier that day.
"I have just realized what a 'goat' is," she replied still laughing uncontrollably.
Ian watched her curiously as he chewed his lip off, then swiped his forehead clean with his forearm before taking another bite off his slice of bread, which was greasy from oil traces left behind by the meat frying in the pan earlier that day. He swallowed and said: "Yeah, I know."
She stopped laughing at once and looked at him incredulously. "You do? But how? You're from England! I lived there my whole life until I moved here to work for Jonas."
He shrugged his shoulders indifferently as he continued chewing away enthusiastically like a child who hadn't eaten in days. "It's nothing shocking really," he said after washing down his food with water from his canteen. "Goats are animals men used to... touch each other... sexually." His cheeks turned pink as he tried not to look her in the eye while talking about such an intimate subject matter with a stranger sitting next to him while they were out in nature after all; especially when one of them was a woman who made him feel more anxious than anything else did lately whenever she was around him. He knew he should try harder but somehow he couldn't muster any willpower for being less of a coward around her anymore than this faint attempt at holding eye contact for now instead of looking down in embarrassment as he usually did around other people in general too; let alone women that made him feel hot all over when thinking about them naked or otherwise which seemed like every single time since meeting Sarah - no matter if there was something very special about her that seemed different from everyone else yet similar to someone else at the same time or if it simply was because she was new in his life that caused him extra excitement whenever he thought about spending time together with her which seemed like every moment since meeting her too - and didn't want to cause himself any unnecessary mental pain by doing so right now either lest he end up doing something stupid that would only result in more suffering later on like tripping over rocks underfoot or stabbing himself accidentally while eating if this little bit of effort wasn't worth much anyway after all... "Yeah." He cleared his throat awkwardly, having forgotten what he was going to say before being interrupted by thoughts about Sarah or golden showers or whatever else would make him blush red as a tomato if someone were watching him right now which made understanding what exactly Ian said difficult enough therefore without having to imagine someone watching him blush as well which would've caused even more confusion than necessary; making him mutter incoherently between bites thereafter... "Well... yes I guess."
Ian's words hung in the air, causing a tense silence to settle between them. Sarah's laughter abruptly ceased, replaced by an uncomfortable shift in her seat. She couldn't bring herself to look at Ian, embarrassed by the sudden intimacy of their conversation. Her cheeks flushed with a mixture of anger and confusion. How could he talk so casually about something like that? And why did he choose to enlighten her in such a crude manner?
Jonas, sensing the awkward tension, decided to break the silence. "Well, now that we're all... informed about goats, shall we continue our journey? We should reach the oasis by sunset, and the thought of fresh water is quite appealing, isn't it?"
Sarah nodded, grateful for the change of topic, and quickly packed away the remnants of their impromptu meal. She cast a sidelong glance at Ian, her unease mounting. It was as if a veil had been lifted, revealing a side of him she had never known existed. She wondered if this revelation would alter the dynamics of their group, tainting the easy camaraderie they had established during their journey.
As they set off once more, the sun cast elongated shadows across the endless expanse of sand, drawing a stark contrast against the radiant blue sky. Sarah focused her gaze on the shifting dunes, hoping to quiet her racing thoughts. She wasn't sure how to process what had just transpired, her mind a chaotic jumble of emotions. There was an unfamiliar tension now, an unspoken boundary that had been crossed.
Ian, too, felt the weight of the conversation settle heavily on his shoulders. He regretted the way he had nonchalantly shared that piece of information, realizing now that it had been inappropriate. As he trudged through the sand, he sought solace in the rhythmic crunch of his footsteps, attempting to drown out the rising tide of self-doubt and embarrassment within him.
With each passing mile, Sarah and Ian found themselves stealing glances at one another, their eyes meeting fleetingly before quickly shifting away. It was as if they were caught in a delicate dance of uncertainty, each hesitant step carrying the weight of unspoken words and unexplored emotions.
Jonas, though oblivious to the shift in dynamics, couldn't help but notice a subtle change in the air. The previously lighthearted banter between him and Sarah had grown muted, replaced by an awkwardness that seemed to affect the entire group. His mind raced, contemplating ways to remedy the situation, but every solution seemed half-formed and incomplete.
As the sun began its descent towards the horizon, casting an orange glow over the desert, they finally reached the oasis. The sight of shimmering water promised relief from the desert's relentless heat, but it did little to alleviate the tension enveloping their small band.
Sarah took a deep breath, summoning the courage to address the elephant in the room. "Ian," she said softly, her voice barely audible over the rustle of palm fronds in the gentle breeze. "I... I didn't appreciate the way you shared that information back there."
Ian winced, his gaze fixed on the ground. "I'm sorry, Sarah. I should have been more considerate, more... sensitive to the situation."
She nodded, her gentle demeanor softening. "I know you didn't mean any harm," she said, her voice filled with understanding. "But sometimes it's important to be aware of how our words can affect others."
He looked up at her, gratitude flashing in his eyes. "Thank you, Sarah. I'll remember that."
Jonas, who had been observing their exchange, smiled. The tension in the group had dissipated, replaced by a renewed sense of unity. The oasis seemed to breathe life back into their souls, offering an opportunity for growth and forgiveness.
As Sarah, Ian, and Jonas settled by the tranquil pool, their reflections mirrored in the water, they shared stories of their past adventures and dreams for the future. In that moment, the desert became more than just a harsh landscape; it became a crucible of self-discovery and friendship, binding them closer together.
As the night sky unfurled its tapestry of stars, the group found comfort in the shared silence, knowing that alongside the challenges they faced, they had forged a bond that would withstand the tests of time. The sound of their laughter filled the air, a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring power of camaraderie.
And so, under the watchful gaze of the twinkling stars, they drifted off to sleep, their dreams intermingling with the whispers of the wind, carrying them further into the vastness of the desert, where new adventures awaited.
