Published 12/1/2023“Are you ready?” Mentor asked.
I nodded, my heart pounding in my chest. I had been training for this moment for years, and now it was finally here. I was about to face the ultimate test of my abilities as a wizard.
Mentor placed a hand on my shoulder, his eyes filled with confidence and pride. “Remember everything I’ve taught you,” he said. “Trust in your instincts, and you will succeed.”
I took a deep breath, trying to calm my nerves. “I will,” I promised.
With that, Mentor stepped back, giving me space to work. The room around us was filled with magical artifacts and books, their power practically humming in the air. It was a small library hidden away in the basement of an old bookstore – our secret sanctuary where we had spent countless hours studying and practicing magic.
In the center of the room stood a large stone pedestal, upon which sat an ancient tome bound in leather. The Book of Ages – it contained knowledge and spells from centuries past, its pages filled with the wisdom of those who had come before me.
My task was simple: open the book and recite the incantation written on its first page. Doing so would unlock its full power, granting me access to all of its secrets. But there was a catch – if I failed or made even the slightest mistake, the book would be sealed forever, its knowledge lost to me and future generations.
I approached the pedestal cautiously, feeling a mix of excitement and trepidation. This was it – my moment to prove myself as a worthy wizard.
With trembling hands, I reached out and lifted the book’s cover. A surge of energy pulsed through me as I made contact with its ancient pages. Symbols and glyphs danced across my vision as if alive with magic.
I took another deep breath to steady myself before focusing on the incantation before me.
“Elohim, elohim, oseh ma’aseh bereshit,” I began, my voice strong and confident. “Baruch shem kevod malchuto le’olam va’ed.”
As I spoke the words, a warm glow enveloped me, growing brighter with each syllable. The room around me seemed to fade away as I became lost in the power of the incantation.
Suddenly, a sharp pain shot through my head, causing me to stumble and lose focus. The glow faded slightly as my concentration wavered.
“Keep going!” Mentor’s voice urged from somewhere nearby. “You can do this!”
I shook off the pain and refocused on the words before me.
“Yahweh Elohim tzavaot,” I continued. “Asher hayah v’hoveh v’yavo.”
The glow intensified once more as I neared the end of the incantation. The room around me seemed to vibrate with energy.
“Yud-hey-vav-hey Adonai Elohim,” I concluded. “Amen.”
With those final words, a blinding light erupted from the book, filling the entire room. I shielded my eyes against its brilliance as it grew too intense to bear.
Then suddenly, it was gone.
I cautiously lowered my arm and blinked away the spots in my vision. As my sight cleared, I gasped at what I saw before me – standing where Mentor had been was not a man but a figure clad in robes that shimmered with an otherworldly light.
“Mentor?” I asked uncertainly.
The figure nodded solemnly. “In a way,” he replied, his voice deep and resonant.
“What do you mean?” I asked, confusion etching across my face.
The figure stepped forward until he was standing directly in front of me. His gaze bore into mine, and I felt a shiver run down my spine.
“I am not who you think I am,” he said cryptically.
I frowned, trying to make sense of his words. “What do you mean?” I asked again.
The figure sighed and closed his eyes for a moment before meeting my gaze once more. “I am not from this time,” he said simply. “I am a wizard from the future.”
I stared at him in disbelief, my mind struggling to process what he was saying. “But… how is that possible?” I stammered.
The figure – the wizard from the future – reached up and removed his hood, revealing a face that was both familiar and yet somehow different. His features were older, weathered by time and experience.
“Time travel is a complex magic,” he explained. “One that few have mastered. But I assure you, it is very real.”
I shook my head in disbelief. This couldn’t be happening – it was too much to take in all at once.
The wizard from the future – Mentor – placed a hand on my shoulder, his touch reassuring. “I know this is a lot to take in,” he said gently. “But there isn’t much time. We need to talk.”
I nodded slowly, still trying to wrap my mind around the revelation. “Okay,” I replied quietly.
Mentor led me over to a small table in the corner of the room and gestured for me to sit down. He took the seat across from me and leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table.
“There’s something you need to know,” he began gravely. “Something important that will change everything.”
