·
Published 4/30/2023Trapped in a perilous Pacific paradise, brave adventurers Jared, Boris & Ezekiel discover an archaic machine granting them immense superhuman strength -- but soon encounter a relentless foe seeking to utilize their newfound power, leading to a desperate, thrilling quest to protect their newfound strength and save the world.

A sudden gust of wind blew the door to the bar closed behind us. I had to grab it before it shut in my face and broke my nose. It opened with a bang, and we all stumbled inside.
I caught myself on the counter, and turned around to face my friends. They couldn’t even stand up straight - Boris was leaning back against the wall, and Ezekiel was standing on his tip-toes like he was about to fall over at any moment. It wasn’t that funny anymore, but I laughed anyway. “That was one hell of a walk.”
Boris groaned something that sounded vaguely like ‘You call this walk?’ while Ezekiel wheezed something that I couldn’t understand at all.
I ordered a round of strong drinks for them, and asked the bartender if there were rooms available for the night. He didn’t hear me because the music was so loud, so I repeated myself louder. Finally he nodded and pointed towards the back of the room with a grimy finger.
I almost tripped on someone as I made my way to the counter again. All of this bar hopping was getting tiring, but what choice did we have? We needed money if we wanted to get out of here tomorrow morning - or whenever it finally was when we slept it off - and we didn't want to get stuck in some town full of crazies with nothing but our clothes on our backs.
Luckily, this place seemed like a decent enough place for us to stay for now; no one seemed hostile towards us, and they were all nice enough to let us spend our money here without beating us up too badly first. The last thing we needed right now was more trouble.
We finished our beer after paying our tab, and staggered onward down the hallway until we found the room at the end of it. I unlocked it and pushed open the door with one hand while holding onto the wall with another arm; Ezekiel was still trying to stand on his tip-toes next to me, but Boris decided to take up most of the space in front of me instead of walking in a straight line next to me like he usually did.
"Hey! Watch where you're going," said Boris as he held onto my shoulder for support. "You could be more careful." He looked down at me suddenly with wide eyes when he realized how close our bodies were together at that moment, but quickly turned away again when I looked up at him, smiling widely as usual even though I knew he'd rather be somewhere else right now than here with me in this hallway with these other guys in this strange country far away from home – or anywhere else but here, really. He could be such a kid sometimes; always wanting everything just so without giving anything back in return. But I loved him all the same. Even though he always twisted things around until they were ugly and hurtful somehow, or accused me of being selfish or not giving enough without ever giving anything back himself. It's hard explaining love sometimes, especially when you don't even fully understand it yourself half the time. Or maybe because you don't understand it yourself half the time? Love can be quite confusing, but that's okay because then love is exciting too! And excitement is fun! As long as you aren't alone in danger when you're excited or scared, or both, like we were today with those gunshots across town, and that bomb going off earlier today too.
We should have stayed home instead. We should have listened and not gone out drinking tonight, not gotten separated from each other. But what are you supposed to do when your friend tells you about a bomb going off in town near his house? You can't just sit there doing nothing – you run out into town with your buddy searching for his family. That’s what we did; we ran out into town together in search of his family. It was a perilous journey, with explosions and strangers chasing after their own friends. Ultimately, we faced the soldier who had executed these attacks all those years ago, seeking revenge against those they felt unloved by.
In the end, we survived the night, though our world was shattered by the loss of life and the cruel actions of others. We now realize that love and friendship are the most powerful forces against darkness, and that even in the face of tragedy, hope remains.
Surrounded by death and chaos, at least we have one another: Boris, Ezekiel, and I, standing strong as the best of friends. Holding onto love and friendship, we cry, hug, and laugh through the pain, knowing that together we can make it through these troubled times.
