The first sign of trouble was the barrenness.

The planet’s surface had been utterly stripped of any form of life. No insects buzzed through the air, no fish swam in the oceans, and not even a single blade of grass swayed in the wind. Even the soil appeared to be completely void of life—no insects or worms ever feasted on the dead organic material.

The second sign of trouble was her arm.

She reached up to rub her right elbow and felt a sharp pain shoot down to her fingers. She hadn’t felt that pain before, but she could tell it was something serious by how much it hurt. She tried to think back to what might have caused it, but every time she did another wave of pain would lash out from her elbow and she would be forced to focus on something else instead. She turned around and started walking away from the ship while holding onto her elbow—it wasn’t going to heal without rest anyway.

She walked for what seemed like hours before finally making it back to her ship. The large metal cargo bay door opened up in front of her, revealing a vast room filled with boxes stacked high against the walls and more boxes stacked even higher in long rows in between them. All except for one: the box that contained the device she needed to contact home. She sat down in front of it and switched it on, waited for it to connect to the relay network and send its data home, then waited some more until finally a message popped up saying “Message Sent”. Satisfied that nothing had gone wrong with the transmission, she sat back and closed her eyes, listening to a soothing melody play on repeat in order to calm down a little bit before turning off the music and opening her eyes again.

The third sign of trouble was him.

He stood at the entrance of the cargo bay, looking at her with such intensity that she couldn’t even look directly at him without feeling as if he was piercing through her soul with his thousand burning eyes. Their stares met in mutual confusion as they both stood there staring at each other until finally she broke eye contact and looked down at her arm instead, wanting desperately not to look him in the eyes again but knowing deep inside that doing so would only bring even more pain than before. She looked at her arm again and tried to remember how it got injured, when suddenly a flood of memories came rushing into her mind all at once: Trying to find an exit out from under a pile of debris after being thrown around by an earthquake; Hurting herself trying desperately to move things out of the way so that she could escape; Gallantly charging towards an incoming landslide despite being emotionally exhausted by all this; Failing miserably because she didn’t have enough strength left inside; Collapsing onto the ground after being buried alive by tons and tons of rock; Passing out for what seemed like years but was most likely only seconds; Waking up because someone was pulling her out from under all those rocks—someone who just happened to look exactly like him! And now here he was standing right in front of me...

She lifted up her head slowly, now able to meet his gaze without flinching or feeling any pain whatsoever—the pain in her arm had instantly vanished along with everything else inside her mind—and stared straight into his eyes. He stared back at her just as intensely as before while pouring all of his feelings into their silent conversation without having any idea why they were doing so or what they were talking about because neither one of them knew how words worked anymore—as far as they knew they were just sending telepathic messages back and forth between each other using their minds instead of mouths—but neither one cared about that because all there existed between them at this moment was pure love for each other...

“Why did you pull me out from under all those rocks?” asked Larra “You know I already passed away! This is my afterlife!” A look of sorrow immediately shot across his face as soon as those words left Larra’s mouth, but he quickly covered it over with a comforting smile as he replied “No! You are not dead! You are still very much alive! You have no idea how long I have been waiting for you... I will never let you die on this planet ever again!” His voice became shaky towards the end as tears began welling up behind his eyes—he had been waiting for this day for so long that hearing these words come out from Larra’s mouth felt like someone had stabbed him right through his heart... But he kept smiling nonetheless because he knew this was going exactly according to plan...
