The town’s woods started just beyond the end of the dock, and I hated going there alone.
I avoided it as much as I could, but today was different.
Today was the day I was going to propose to Amy.
So, if that meant braving the dark, creepy woods to find the perfect spot, then so be it.
With a quick glance back at my boat, the one Amy and I had taken many times out on the lake together, I headed forward into the trees.
The canopy above me blocked out most of the sun's light, making it difficult to see, even though it wasn't yet noon.
I walked for what felt like hours before finally finding a clearing that looked perfect for our picnic.
No one would be able to see us here unless they were already in the woods or on the lake, and neither of those things were likely to happen.
I stopped before entering the clearing and listened. There was nothing out there except for birds chirping in the trees and an occasional rustling sound like something was running through the brush nearby. Nervous sweat began to bead across my forehead and down my back. It probably just a rabbit or something eating lunch or trying to escape a predator...but that didn't stop my heart from pounding loudly in my chest or my palms from growing damp with fear-induced sweat. After another minute or two of listening and waiting, I decided nothing was going to jump out at me from behind a tree and walk slowly into the clearing where I would lay out our blanket and await Amy's arrival.
Amy is going to love this place when she gets here!
With that thought in mind, I spread out our blanket across the grassy ground and sat down to wait for her arrival.
A few minutes went by before I heard voices approaching through the trees, first giggling and laughing at whatever it was they were talking about followed by footsteps crunching across dead leaves on their way over.
My heart raced again as I stood up straight in anticipation of seeing Amy again after what felt like an eternity since we had last seen each other face-to-face (aside from seeing her across a crowded restaurant during lunch breaks).
I knew she would be here any second now; all she had to do was follow the path through the woods until she saw me standing off to her left in front of our blanket spread out beneath some large oak trees while everyone else headed off ahead of her towards their own blankets somewhere deeper into the woods - away from me and closer to their friends' blankets - where they belonged.
It felt like hours before someone finally stepped into view through an opening between two particularly large evergreen trees about 30 feet away from me.
As the figure drew closer, my heart pounded even harder, and I could feel a mix of excitement and nerves welling up within me. But as the person emerged from the shadows, I felt my heart sink in disappointment. It wasn't Amy.
It was a man, tall and slender, with an unkempt beard and wild, darting eyes. He wore ragged clothes and carried a burlap sack slung over his shoulder. His presence in the serene woodland clearing felt jarring, out of place.
"Hello," I greeted cautiously, unsure of how to react to this unexpected visitor.
The man's eyes narrowed, assessing me with a mixture of skepticism and curiosity. "What brings you here, lad?" he asked, his voice gruff and weighted with a tinge of suspicion.
"I... I was actually expecting someone else," I stammered, feeling the weight of the proposal ring in my pocket like an accusation. "What about you? What brings you to this part of the woods?"
He let out a wheezing chuckle, devoid of mirth. "I call this place my home, young man," he replied. "The woods have been my sanctuary for as long as I can remember."
His words sent shivers down my spine, and my eyes darted around, suddenly aware of the imposing darkness of the trees surrounding us. "I had no idea anyone lived out here," I muttered.
"Most people don't," he said cryptically, his gaze drifting to the burlap sack by his side. "But enough about me. What were you expecting? Who were you waiting for?"
I hesitated for a moment, wondering if I should share such personal details with a stranger. But the anticipation had become unbearable, and a flicker of hope ignited within me. Maybe this man had seen Amy on her way here. Maybe he knew something I didn't.
"I'm waiting for Amy," I confessed, my voice filled with yearning. "She's... she's the love of my life, and I planned to propose to her here today."
The man's face softened for a brief moment, revealing a glimmer of empathy. "Love, huh? It's a powerful force, I must admit." He paused, as if lost in his own thoughts. "But the woods, as beautiful as they may seem, can be treacherous. Sometimes, they swallow your hopes and dreams whole."
His words sent a chill down my spine, but I couldn't help but feel a hint of desperation. "Have you seen her? Has Amy passed by here?"
The man shook his head slowly, his expression heavy with sorrow. "I'm sorry, lad. I've seen no one but you today."
Disappointment washed over me, threatening to darken the joy that had filled my spirit moments ago. A sense of unease settled in, and I couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't right.
Just as I was about to thank the man for his time and start my journey back to the safety of the town, a distant sound caught my attention. It was a faint rustling; a sound of movement that made the forest come alive. The man and I exchanged nervous glances, sensing that we were no longer alone.
Suddenly, a voice pierced through the silence, echoing with an ethereal, otherworldly quality. "David..." it called, soft and melodic, almost like a whispered caress.
My heart leaped in my chest, recognizing that voice anywhere. It was Amy's voice. I turned to the man, a mixture of fear and hope etched on my face.
"You hear that, don't you? That's her voice. She's here!" I exclaimed, my voice trembling with excitement.
The man's eyes widened, a flicker of fear dancing within them. "Beware, lad," he warned. "The woods can be deceiving. It is said...it is said that the spirits of lost lovers reside here. They lure unsuspecting souls into their grasp, forever trapping them in a suspended state between life and death."
His words sent a chill down my spine, but my love for Amy overpowered any rational thinking. Without another word, I dashed towards the sound of her voice, delving deeper into the woods, where darkness and uncertainty awaited. Little did I know the challenges that would lie ahead, testing the strength of our love and demanding sacrifices I never could have imagined.
