The Secrets Within Shadows
·
Published 6/19/2023In 1940s New York City, Eliza, a fiercely independent and resourceful woman, becomes entangled in the treacherous world of the local mafia. When her childhood friend Danny is unwittingly pulled deeper into the criminal organization, Eliza seizes the opportunity to expose the truth, fighting not only for their freedom but also to shatter the chains that bind her to the oppressive societal norms of the era. Will Eliza's unyielding determination be enough to outwit both the ruthless criminals and the iron grip of prejudice, ultimately paving her own path towards justice and liberation?

“Eliza is so beautiful,” Danny said as he stared at me with those puppy eyes of his.
“Stop…staring…like that, Danny,” I told him. “You look like a fool.”
I could feel my cheeks heating up. He was actually making me blush! No man has ever done that to me before let alone some slimy weasel like Danny.
“But you are the most beautiful woman in the world and I am your humble admirer, Eliza,” Danny replied. “Why don't you agree to go on a date with me? I would treat you nice, Eliza. I will take you out to dinner at the finest restaurant in town. We can have wine and dine until the sun goes down.”
I was speechless but it only lasted for a moment or two because I immediately burst into laughter.
“Take me out to dinner? What do you think this is, Danny? It's not the 1930s anymore! You don't 'take someone out to dinner' anymore! You cannot afford to take me anywhere because all you do is smoke and drink all day long! You don't even have a job but you want to take me out to dinner? You think that's gonna happen?” I asked him looking insulted. “I'm not one of those girls who will fall for your cheesy pick-up lines, Danny. Now leave me alone before I throw something at you!”
As I turned my back on him, Danny grabbed my arm and pulled me back towards him. He took hold of my face and forced his lips onto mine and tried to kiss me. His breath smelled bad! It smelled like cigarettes and garlic! How could anyone let themselves get so filthy? He was a mess and he did not care about himself at all! Why couldn't he just learn how to be clean?
Danny had always been a desperate creep ever since we were kids in elementary school but he had never tried anything like this before! In fact, he hadn't talked or even looked at me in any peculiar way when we were kids either; he just remembered liking the color of my dress once or twice when we were kids but that wasn't anything unusual either. That was just him being weird again; there was nothing more to it than that. But this time, he had actually tried kissing me and it made no sense whatsoever because we were not friends or even acquaintances anymore...we didn't know each other well enough for him to try something like that on me now! Why would he just go ahead and kiss someone he didn't even know anymore after all these years? This was just insane! Did he really think it would work on me that easily? Did he really think that he could just start kissing women without their permission these days? He was going to get arrested if someone saw him do this in public! Did he really not know anything about the real world anymore after being locked up in prison for so many years? It made no sense whatsoever! If anything, his actions only make him look like an idiot...and they were making *me* look like an idiot too! What kind of girl would allow herself be kissed by some stranger on the street? No self-respecting woman would do something like that for sure…but then why did I feel so conflicted about what had just happened? Why did I feel so…flustered by his touch? Why did my heart race when our lips touched each other? Why did I start feeling giddy inside? Why did I start feeling warm inside when his tongue started licking inside my mouth?! When we broke away from each other's embrace, neither of us said anything for a moment or two but we kept staring into each other's eyes without blinking for what felt like forever but must have only been about three seconds because it certainly felt longer than that…but then Danny started chuckling under his breath as if something funny had just happened.
What was going through his mind right now? Was he laughing because something silly had just popped into his head or did something else make him laugh like that? Did he find what happened between us funny somehow or was he laughing while thinking about something else entirely unrelated to what just happened between us…perhaps things related to his life in prison perhaps or things related to our lives back when we were kids together maybe…things which made him laugh because they were funny to remember perhaps but not necessarily because they had anything to do with our kiss just now. Trying hard not to lose myself in thought any further, I turned my back on Danny once again and left him standing on the sidewalk where we met earlier today; leaving him behind without saying another word as if nothing strange had happened between us today at all even though it definitely had…in fact, it confused me more than anything else ever could have…
Danny stood on the sidewalk, watching Eliza walk away from him. He ran a hand through his unkempt hair, trying to make sense of what had just happened. The taste of her lingered on his lips, a mixture of sweetness and uncertainty. He couldn't help but feel a strange mixture of shame and exhilaration. Shame because he knew he had crossed a line, kissed a woman without her permission. Exhilaration because for that brief moment, he had felt a connection, a spark that he had never experienced before.
As he pondered over the events of the day, memories began to flood his mind. Memories of a time long gone, of a friendship that had once been pure and innocent. Eliza had been his best friend as a child, the only one who had accepted him despite his troubled home life. It was her kindness and warmth that had given Danny hope during those dark days. But as they grew older, they drifted apart. Danny's path had led him to a life of crime and it seemed that Eliza had chosen the complete opposite. They had become strangers, destined to walk separate paths.
Lost in his thoughts, Danny found himself wandering aimlessly through the city streets. The night enveloped him, casting shadows on his troubled soul. His mind replayed their encounter on a loop. He thought about the desperation in his actions, the reckless impulse that had driven him to kiss her. He couldn't shake the feeling that there was something more to it, something deeper that he couldn't quite comprehend.
Days turned into weeks, and the memory of that fateful encounter stayed with Danny. He became consumed by his obsession with Eliza, haunted by the ghost of their past friendship. He started to frequent the places he knew she would visit, hoping to catch a glimpse of her. But each attempt ended in disappointment, with Eliza remaining an elusive figure in his quest for redemption.
One day, as Danny sat alone in a dimly lit bar, drowning his sorrows in whiskey, a familiar voice broke through the haze of his thoughts. It was Eliza, standing at the entrance of the bar, a hesitant look in her eyes. Danny's heart skipped a beat as their eyes met, the weight of their shared history hanging in the air. With a slight nod, Eliza made her way towards him, her steps cautious but determined. She took a seat beside him, her presence filling the air with a tangible tension.
"I never thought I would see you again," Danny whispered, his voice choked with emotion.
"Neither did I," Eliza replied, her voice soft yet filled with an underlying strength. "But something keeps pulling me back to you, Danny. I can't explain it, but there's a connection between us that I can't ignore."
Danny's eyes widened in surprise. He had never anticipated this confession from Eliza. He had always thought that their past would forever remain nothing more than a distant memory, but here she was, reaching out to him when he least expected it.
"I've spent so long trying to push you out of my mind," Eliza continued, her voice trembling. "But I can't deny the way that kiss made me feel. It awakened something inside me, something I never thought I would experience again."
Danny stared at her, disbelief and hope warring within him. He reached out and gently placed a hand on hers, feeling a spark of electricity between them.
"Eliza, I've made so many mistakes," he confessed, his voice filled with regret. "But I want to change. I want to be worthy of you, of the connection we share. If you're willing to give me a chance, I'll do whatever it takes to make things right."
Eliza looked deep into Danny's eyes, searching for sincerity and truth. And as she did, her heart whispered of forgiveness and second chances. In that moment, she made a decision that would change both of their lives forever.
"Okay, Danny," she said softly, a smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "Let's see where this takes us."
