The Immortal Rebellion
·
Published 3/28/2023Against all odds, the awkward and determined Jaimie must draw strength from within to take on the immortal elites who control the distant underwater world and make immortality available to all that seek it.
"What's the point of living forever if it means living like this?" Jaimie asked.
The group stood in the shadows of a large storage container, overlooking the warehouse where the elites kept their most valuable possessions. A few men were going from room to room, checking inventory and making sure everything was in order.
"It's like I'm just... wasting away," Jaimie continued, scanning the warehouse with her binoculars. "I mean, what do they even use these things for? They're rich enough that they don't need to work. And they're immortal, so what are they gonna do, collect these treasures forever? What's the point in that? Why not share with everyone else?"
"Lower your voice, I think we're almost there," Sam whispered back. Sam was an older man, an ally she'd met a few weeks back when she'd joined the rebellion. He had been part of it before, but after he'd been injured one too many times he wasn't allowed to fight anymore. So now he took care of administration and intel gathering. The others didn't trust him, but he was all Jaimie had.
"I mean, why not share it with everyone?" she continued talking, louder this time as she scanned around for any more elites. "There are billions of people on Earth and only a handful of them are getting immortality treatments."
"Hey, I hear you," Sam said. "But we can't just go knocking down doors asking for immortality treatment for everyone."
Jaimie shook her head. "They have all these things here," she gestured to the warehouse around her. "Why not share it? Make it available to everyone?"
Sam sighed and put his hand on her shoulder. "We've been over this before," he said softly as he looked into her eyes. "It's too complicated to explain right now... but there *are* reasons why they keep it so secret."
Jaimie bit her lip and looked away from him. She felt ashamed; she knew that there were reasons why the elites held onto their immortality treatments so tightly, but she still couldn't help but feel frustrated by it all sometimes. It seemed unfair that there were billions suffering around the world while a handful lived comfortably for eternity. No matter how much she understood or tried to rationalize it all away though... there was no denying that things weren't fair.
"We'll make changes though," Sam continued as he tried to smile at her and reassure her that there was hope yet. "If we can get in here and steal some of this stuff then we can find out what makes them immortal." He gestured to the warehouse around them again as he spoke those last words; Jaimie knew exactly what he was thinking about too: getting rid of the elites once and for all would be a whole lot easier if they could figure out how to replicate their immortality treatments without having to rely on them directly anymore - at least until they could overthrow them peacefully and make things fairer for everyone else on Earth instead anyway - but this mission wasn't about that at all: they would steal whatever they could find within the next few hours among other things and then run away before anyone knew what was happening in the first place. It was dangerous work; they didn't know exactly who was working where or how many guards there were in total, their plan relied heavily on surprise attacks and quick thinking - both things Jaimie struggled with - but if anything could help her prove herself then this surely would be it: stealing from the elites themselves would surely be enough proof that she could handle being part of this movement even if none of them seemed to think otherwise so far...
