Pharaoh and the Forge of Oubo
·
Published 3/14/2023In fifth century BCE Africa, Pharaoh, an audacious ruler of Oubo kingdom, must handle an arduous task against a powerful adversary, alongside loyal and courageous companion Taura, putting the kingdom's future in peril to uncover a dark secret, while risking the cost of protection being too great.
"Fools, I say! All of you are fools! You do not know how to rule your kingdom. The land is in ruin, the people are starving and you are wasting our resources on this foolish quest."
The council hall was in uproar. The king sat motionless. He had heard all this before. But he knew what he was doing was right.
"Our mines have run dry, we have no wood to build ships and we cannot even afford to pay our warriors anymore."
The king stood up slowly and walked towards the exit. His advisors fell silent as he passed them. "You may all leave now," he said without turning around.
He walked out into the hallway and closed his eyes. He would rather be anywhere but here. There was a rustling sound as Taura, his faithful friend turned protector, came up behind him.
"Are you alright my king? You look troubled." Taura's voice echoed softly through the empty hallways of the castle. The king sighed deeply. "I am fine my friend," he replied wearily, "Look at me Taura, I am a king, the ruler of all that I see before me. Why do they not understand my vision?" He gestured towards the large windows that overlooked the courtyard of the castle and beyond it to the vast forest that stretched out endlessly in every direction like a blanket of green velvet that covered the rolling hills and valleys of their realm. "I see so much beauty here, so much life..." He trailed off for a moment as if lost in thought then looked back at Taura with determination on his face and strength in his voice. "They do not understand Taura," he continued, "They do not understand what it means to be a king, to rule over all that you see before you with responsibility and honor." He turned away from the window towards Taura who was nodding quietly in agreement while looking at him with gentle eyes filled with admiration and respect. "I mean to show them all," he declared loudly as he grabbed hold of his sword and raised it high above his head, "I will show them how a true king behaves!" With that he sprinted down the hallway followed by an excited Taura who could barely keep up with her master's swift pace.
