Published 4/3/2023Exiled vampire Kevin and stalwart exorcist Norton must overcome their clashing world views and confront their innermost demons to team up and save Europe from Count Jack's vampiric rule, culminating in an epic battle for the legendary tome that could decide the fate of the continent.
The world is an unfair place. I’m not talking about the superficial unfairness of a rich man being richer than me, but instead the unfairness of life and death. I’d seen too many lives lost, each one more painful than the last.
Still, this was something new. In all my years on earth, I had never seen a city so empty. Even during the Black Death, there were still some left alive to bury the dead. But here…there was no one left at all.
And it was my fault.
I ran through the streets, desperate to find salvation. My feet splashed through puddles of blood and mud as I raced towards the nearest cathedral, hoping that God was listening this time. The streets were littered with bodies; people who had been taken by someone or something while they slept in their beds, working in their shops, or simply walking down the street.
I looked up at the sky and saw that it was darkening even further, as if night was upon us before its time. The sun would be gone soon, which meant that those things I’d heard whispers about were true. Vampires existed, and they were hungry for blood tonight like never before.
I reached my destination in front of the cathedral doors just as night began to fall across London. I pounded on the door, praying that someone would hear me and let me inside where I could hide from those monsters I had helped create.
The doors opened with a groan and a man appeared in front of me – Father Norton himself! He didn’t look happy to see me at all; in fact he looked downright murderous as he pointed his wooden crossbow at my face and growled at me to stop right there.
I raised my hands and took a step back, silently pleading with him to understand what was happening outside in his city tonight. He lowered his weapon slightly and asked what I wanted from him this time – clearly he remembered our last encounter when he tried to destroy me after finding out that I wasn’t human anymore…or rather, undead like him now. We’d made peace since then and even started to work together when we realized we both had a common enemy: Count Jack who ruled over this city with an iron fist and thirst for blood that knew no bounds.
But now it seemed we needed each other again to survive this night because neither of us could survive alone against the things lurking outside looking for fresh meat (or blood). There weren’t enough bullets for both of us to kill everything outside – even with his holy water he would run out eventually against these creatures – so we needed a better plan than killing them one by one until all our ammunition ran out and we were overwhelmed by sheer numbers alone.
That meant we needed to strike directly against Count Jack himself if we ever wanted to get rid of his brood once and for all. That meant breaking into his castle which sat atop a nearby hill overlooking London and confronting him head-on before he managed to infect everyone left in town with vampirism too…and eventually every human on earth if we let him continue for too long unchallenged as he already has for centuries now!
