"So I was thinking, well, we're in the middle of nowhere and you have to go home in a few days. I could easily go on a road trip to some cool spots in Asia before we part ways."
"Zhang, your English is awesome but we don't always understand you," Liya said with an embarrassed smile.
They were sitting at a small table at the front of their hostel cafe, drinking overpriced mineral water and eating some kind of strange salty bread that Liya had picked out. They'd been exchanging stories about North America and China for a couple hours now.
"You know what I mean, Lih-ah?" Zhang replied, emphasizing the last syllable of her name like he always did. "I mean we can travel where it's safe, meet new people, eat crazy food that'll probably kill us... The usual stuff."
Liya looked at him thoughtfully and smiled. "You know I'm not too fun because I'm usually too busy studying or working... but I think this idea sounds awesome!"
Zhang grinned and took a long drink from his bottle. He loved how excited she got when she shared an interest with him. It reminded him of why he'd wanted to move to Canada so much after they met online two months ago. He wanted to get as close as possible to her while they could still take advantage of their visas.
"But wait..." Liya looked concerned suddenly. "Are you... are you sure you want to go through all that trouble? What if the border police catch us? How will we explain ourselves? Are you sure it's worth it?" Her eyes were wide with worry as she looked at him searchingly.
He took her hand across the table, smiling reassuringly at her. "Relax, Lih-ah! If we follow my plan, there won't be any problems with the border police." He paused, looking down at his hand holding hers for a moment, then met her gaze again. "I've got everything covered."
