Pups with Power: A Tale of Growth and Adventure
·
Published 6/7/2023In 22nd century New Zealand, nine heroic pups possessing extraordinary powers - but human flaws - must exercise courage and friendship to overcome the complex obstacles in their lives, or risk losing their newfound personal growth.

The first time I saw the Paw Patrol, I was just a little kid. My mom had taken me to a park and we played on the slides and swings, and when it started to get dark, she told me it was time to go home. We walked down the sidewalk together, back to our house and I clutched her hand with one paw and held my other paw up in the air behind her head and pretended I was flying. The clouds were big and white and stuck out against the blue sky.
We passed by a group of kids playing on the street, running around in circles around two people who were sitting on the curb of a driveway. One of those people was a big dog. He had brown fur that sort of looked like mud-colored chocolate chip cookies, with big ears and a long tail that waved back and forth as he ran around. He had a shiny gold badge on his chest that said "Chase" in red letters. He looked like he was having fun, but something about him made me feel sad. It wasn't until my mom told me that Chase is sick that I knew why.
"Hi," she said to the kids, looking at them with her kind eyes. "What are you doing?"
A girl who was wearing rainbow-striped socks with yellow shoes turned to us and smiled. "We're making cookies!" she said proudly. "We're going to bake them for Chase." She pointed at the dog who was running around in circles with another boy who wore pink cowboy boots with sparkles on them. "He's so happy now," she told my mom. "He hasn't been well."
I asked what happened to Chase, why he hadn't been well. My mom took a deep breath before answering. "When dogs don't have enough food or shelter or water," she explained carefully, putting her paws on my shoulders as she spoke, "they can get sick." She bent down so we were eye-level and put an arm around my waist so that we were hugging each other sideways. Her voice got quiet for a moment before she continued speaking again. "Some dogs even die -- especially if they're very small or very old." My eyes widened at this news and I felt cold all over my body when I realized how lucky Chase was to be alive at all after he'd been through so much suffering in his life.
My mom kept talking while we hugged each other tightly; it felt good being close to her after hearing news like this, because she always made me feel better no matter what kind of trouble I got into -- or even if I didn't do anything wrong at all! It's hard not feeling scared sometimes when something scary happens instead of exciting or fun or surprising like most things usually are when you're little; it's easy for you to fall apart when you don't have your mom there holding you together. But now we were strong together against whatever might try to hurt us from stealing our happiness away from us! We'd run away from it if we had to! Mom would keep any bad things away from us if they came near!
She finished telling me about Chase's situation -- how he needed more food than regular dogs because he hadn't eaten much for years before he was rescued from living on the streets by some nice people -- and then went on to explain how the Paw Patrol started helping animals in need like Chase (and other animals too) by giving them food and medical attention when they needed it most! They had lots of adventures too; there were ten dogs in all who called themselves members of the Paw Patrol: Officer Chase, Marshall the fire dog, Ryder the police dog, Rubble the construction worker dog, Rocky the snowboarder dog, Zuma the surfer dog -- all kinds of dogs who did all kinds of amazing things! There was also Skye who helped fly planes filled with supplies where they needed to go; there was Everest who helped rescue people who were trapped in burning buildings; there was Tracker who tracked missing children; there was Bella the nurse dog; there was Tuck who could fix broken car windows (and sometimes their engines too); there was even Ellie who could work as an EMT! But best of all: Paw Patrol members saved lives wherever they went! They saved puppies like me from getting lost or in danger; they also saved cats sometimes too! They saved humans too if they needed help!
My mom knelt down next to Chase again once she finished talking about everything she knew about them -- especially how important it was for people to help dogs like Chase so that nobody else ever had to suffer like him! She put her fingers under one paw while I put my hand over one paw -- which made us look like we were holding hands together! We told him thank you for keeping everyone safe by joining the Paw Patrol -- and that we hoped he'd get well soon so everybody could go back home again soon! When we stood up again, Mom hugged me
