Victor's Fortune: Adventure in 19th Century Europe
·
Published 6/13/2023Victor Burns, an undeniable master criminal, uses his cunning to gain riches, narrowly evading capture from a spiteful inspector of police as he attempts to reclaim a valuable artifact amidst mayhem, discovering along the way that his young protégé is more capable than Victor initially believed.

Victor's hand shook. It was not from fear or anger, but from excitement. He had done it. He had pulled off the biggest heist of his career, and the feeling was incredible.
The stone in his hand seemed to vibrate with its own tiny heartbeat, thrumming against his grip. Victor could feel a pulse within it, a life force that called out to him. A voice whispered in his head, urging him to take it home and put it in its rightful place - the altar in the mountainside cave on the edge of the city, where he could bask in its glow.
Victor had been planning this heist for months, studying every facet of the town's security. He recruited Gelina and George - an old gypsy woman who claimed she could read minds and a young pickpocket that he had been training since he saved him from a beating on a street corner three years ago.
But as much as Victor knew about security and how to read people, one thing still remained hidden: the artifact itself. The only thing known about it was that it was a large gemstone that shone with an ancient glory when placed in the altar at the mountain side shrine. That is why Victor came here to begin with, because of that mysterious light shining in the night sky like a beacon for any thief with enough guts to go and steal it.
Victor had gotten closer than anyone else ever has before. He knew all of the security systems and patrol patterns of the city watchmen while they were away on vacation, he had studied them over and over until they were as familiar as his own skin. And now he was inside their most secure treasure vault right under their noses - he had been there for five minutes already!
He turned around to look at Gelina and George - both were crouched behind some crates near the door with anxious looks on their faces. Gelina was studying him for any sign of trouble as she always did, but George just looked like he might be sick or even faint at any moment - and Victor couldn't blame him for that; this job was dangerous enough with all of the precautions they took against discovery so there wasn't any reason to add more risks by moving around inside the vault itself!
"Victor," Gelina said, "we need to get out of here."
"I know," Victor replied quietly, "but we can't leave without taking something." He gazed down at the stone again before putting it back into his pocket with a sigh. "I don't think I'm going to find anything else here worth taking though."
"Then let's go," Gelina urged, "let's get out of here before we're caught!" As she spoke, her eyes darted towards George who nodded in agreement but kept looking pale as death itself at the thought of being discovered inside the vault.
Victor reached into another pocket and pulled out two small bags filled with gold coins. "Here," he said as he handed them over to his accomplices, "this should be enough for us all to live comfortably for a couple years or so."
Gelina grinned broadly as she took her share and counted it carefully before stowing it away neatly somewhere within her skirts and cloak. "It will do nicely," she said happily before turning towards George who took his share hesitantly and stuffed it into a pocket within his jacket without counting it once. His nervous expression made Victor frown - he knew that young man could use some good fortune in his life after growing up on the streets like this!
Victor turned back towards the front door of the vault while Gelina stood up slowly behind him. The door was one big slab made entirely of steel which meant it was much too heavy for either of them to move by themselves even if they wanted to try escape through there! Fortunately though there was also a window high above their heads which could allow them all to climb out easily enough... but would doing so bring them closer or farther away from freedom? And how far were guards patrolling outside? They needed more information than this if they wanted any chance of escaping!
Realizing that their only chance was to confront the uncertainty, Victor signaled for Gelina and George to approach the window. He whispered his plan: they would silently attempt to open the window and listen for any signs of the guards outside. If all seemed calm, they would quickly make their escape.
Gelina's eyes narrowed as she focused her mental abilities on sensing possible danger; George braced himself for climbing the window. Their heartbeats quickened at the thought of finally achieving their goal or facing capture.
With bated breaths, they carried out their plan. The window creaked open ever so slightly, and for a moment, nothing but the outside breeze filled their ears. Then, they heard the distant footsteps of guards making their rounds - an obstacle that they had anticipated. They exchanged
