Beyond the Deep Realm: A Multiversal Odyssey
·
Published 5/3/2023A courageous and ingenious group of scientists working in a revolutionary under-sea lab risk their lives to create a machine that can communicate with alternate realities, but when inter-dimensional creatures invade, will they be strong enough to save the multiverse and themselves, or will they make the ultimate sacrifice?

The lab was dark, save for the occasional orange glow of the emergency lights. The air was warm and humid.
"No-one else is here," said Dr. Jameson, a worried look on his face. "Should we check the main control room?"
"I don't know what good it'll do," replied Dr. Callow, sighing, "but I suppose you're right."
They walked through one of the side doorways into a hallway that lead to the main control room at the end of the vast facility. There were no signs of movement or life anywhere, but as they approached the control room, Dr. Jameson heard a strange noise from inside. It was a faint buzzing sound in the distance, like an enormous swarm of bees had somehow found its way into their lab.
The two scientists slowly opened the door to find themselves staring at a sight they could barely believe; dozens upon dozens of creatures, all completely unknown to them, swarming around them. Something shimmered over their heads - something like an invisible dome that separated them off from the rest of the lab. This must be what created the buzzing sound - some sort of forcefield generator, perhaps? Whatever it was though, it didn't seem to have any effect on their visitors; they simply continued to fly around mindlessly in their little spheres.
Suddenly, one of the creatures flew out towards them and stopped just in front of them. It looked vaguely humanoid - two arms and legs, with four distinct eyes in a somewhat oval-shaped head - but its skin was covered in blue scales and it had two long horns sticking out from its head on either side. The creature opened its mouth wide and let out a loud scream that sounded vaguely like words: "*Death awaits you!*" The scientists instinctively backed off as more and more creatures swarmed towards them until finally they were cornered against the back wall of the room by an immense swarm that left no gaps between them at all. They could see nothing but blue scales and beaks surrounding them as they struggled to breathe in through their oxygen masks while trying not to panic.
As suddenly as it started, everything stopped moving and all sounds faded away until there was nothing but silence again. The creatures disappeared back into their spheres as quickly as they had appeared and there was once again nothing visible except for the green glow from the emergency lights everywhere in the lab.
The two scientists looked at each other for a moment before removing their respirators and gasping for air.
"That... That was terrifying," said Dr. Callow after taking several deep breaths. "What was going on there?! Why did that creature say *death* awaits us?" He started pacing back and forth across the floor with his hands clasped behind his back while he thought about this question aloud to himself.
"I'm not sure," replied Dr. Jameson after taking another few deep breaths to calm down his racing heart rate, "but I think I saw those same creatures before... In one of our simulations!" He walked up to one of their computer terminals near where they had been standing just moments ago during all that excitement and started looking through some files on it, hoping to find some information on what had just happened to them. A few minutes later he spoke up again: "Oh! Yes! Here we go!"
"What is it?" asked Dr. Callow excitedly as he walked over to him and leaned over his shoulder to look at what he had found. After reading for a few seconds, he said: "Oh my goodness! You're right! These are from one of our simulations where we used genetic material from different species from across multiple universes together in order to create new life forms! But how could these creatures have found their way into our simulations?" Another few seconds passed before Dr [Callow] shouted out: "We've got it! This is our fault!" He pointed at an entry at the bottom of one of the files showing how many simulations had been carried out recently with this particular genetic formula involved without any problems or errors! "Someone must have accidentally sent out those designs instead of just deleting them properly!" Now both scientists were shouting simultaneously: "This is our fault!" They both turned around quickly to face each other and stared silently at each other for several agonizingly long seconds before each saying in unison: "It's time to face responsibility."
