The Portal To Creation: Ryobi, Kofi, and Arjay's Untamed Journey
·
Published 3/10/2023Facing untamed forces and impossible choices, three fearless 4th century BCE African friends, Ryobi, Kofi, and Arjay, embark on a treacherous journey through a mysterious portal to a strange and wondrous dimension - in search of a path back to safety.
I walked alone across the field. The sun was setting and the last rays of orange light filled the open spaces between the tall grasses, creating a carpet of gold. I could hear the river in the distance, and I found myself walking in that direction. My new friends had tried to convince me not to go, but they didn’t understand.
I walked a bit further and stopped at the edge of the forest. It was dark now, and I could only see a few feet into it past my own shadow. I never had liked the woods; I always felt like something was watching me from inside those dark trees.
Sighing, I turned away from the forest and began walking back to the village when something caught my eye. There! I looked more closely and saw what appeared to be a bright blue light shining from behind a shrub. I walked closer to it and noticed that it seemed to be pulsing rhythmically. It only took me a moment before realization dawned on me; it was a heartbeat! Was someone hurt? Did someone get hurt while hunting? Why hadn’t anyone noticed yet?
I scrambled over to where I thought the source of the heartbeat was and looked beneath a large bush to find someone lying there, hidden in the tall grasses. The person looked like they were sleeping, their arms folded over their chest. They wore strange clothes: a tunic with colorful strips wrapped around their legs - they looked like some kind of warrior or king! Who ever this person was, they had been hurt pretty badly; there were bloody bandages wrapped around their right leg just under where their tunic covered it. The blood stained cloth was soaked through with rivulets of red that ran down their leg and dripped off onto the grass below them.
I stared at this stranger for several minutes trying to figure out who they might be. As I watched them sleep soundly, breathing slowly with each beat of their heart, my mind raced through all of the people in our village: Kofi, Arjay, my father... they all wore regular clothes and none of them would look very much different than this man here in these woods right now. But then why would no one in our village have come looking for him if he had been here since before sunset? And if no one knew that he was here, how did he get here?
I began thinking about how he could have gotten hurt so badly as I took another glance at his wounds. He must have been in pain when he arrived here because there were crusted up blood blisters all along his arm where he must have gripped it tightly as he walked through our fields on his way here. How long ago did he arrive? And why did no one notice?
As I pondered these questions, I suddenly realized how tired I felt too - even more tired than normal! How long had we been working out in this field today anyway? You know what? After everything we’ve gone through today - after all of well work we put into this harvest - we deserve some rest tonight! We can start worrying about finding this stranger tomorrow morning when we’re rested up after a good night sleep by our fires at home...
