Published 7/26/2023When Ricky and Tinashe, two heroes from opposite sides of Asia, each discover the existence of a parallel world in crisis, they must team up and embark on a dangerous mission to save both their worlds from destruction before time runs out, learning to trust each other and overcome menacing obstacles along the way.
The stars glimmered amidst the blackness of space.
"That's right, you bitch."
Tinashe rolled her neck and cracked her knuckles.
"You hear me? That's right! I'm gonna snap your neck like a twig!"
The stench of sweat, dirt and blood filled the air. The man in front of her staggered around on his feet, trying to put some distance between them but failing miserably due to his wounded leg.
"Hey!" said Ricky, looking up from where he was crouched over a pile of guns and ammunition that he had liberated from a nearby building. "What's goin' on?" He looked back down at one of the guns, took off its magazine and inspected it.
"Just... We're done here," replied Tinashe through gritted teeth. She let out a howl and charged the injured man. He dropped his gaze towards the ground as she approached him and reached into his pocket. The knife in his hand flashed in the light that shone off their armour as he swung it at her head. As she dodged out of the way, she ducked down and swept her leg behind her to trip him up. He fell forward onto his face, dropping his weapon along with him. In one swift movement, she kicked his wrist away from the knife and pressed her foot down on his forearm so he couldn't pick it up again. The man made muffled screams beneath her boot as she bent down to get closer to him. She smiled triumphantly at him as she used her other hand to thrust a knife into his throat and twist it around to make sure that he bled out quickly. She pulled the knife out and wiped the blade clean on his shirt before getting back up on her feet to look down at Ricky who was still inspecting one of the guns in amazement.
"That was pretty cool," he said in awe after a moment or two had passed. "What did you do?"
She shrugged as she walked over towards him while wiping off some blood off of herself with one hand while keeping an eye out for any more hostiles that might have been hiding nearby, but none appeared to be around as far as she could tell. "I dunno what you call it but my instructors always told me that it's easier to take someone down if they're not fighting back." She picked up one of the magazines from the pile of guns to see what kind of ammunition went inside. "How about you? How did you get those guns?"
Ricky's eyes lit up as he proudly held up the gun he had been inspecting. "Well, I found this abandoned building just a few blocks away. It was filled with crates of weapons and ammo. Must have been some sort of military stash." He grinned, a mischievous gleam in his eyes. "I couldn't believe my luck. I grabbed as much as I could carry and thought, why not share the wealth with my partner in crime?"
Tinashe's lips curled into a small smirk as she took the gun from Ricky's hand to examine it herself. "Partner in crime, huh?" She turned the weapon over in her hands, testing its weight before sliding the magazine back into place with an expert flick of her wrist. "Well, lucky for you, I think we make quite the team."
They stood there for a moment, the sounds of distant gunfire ringing in their ears, before Tinashe broke the silence. "We should keep moving. Can't stay in one place for too long." She gestured towards the horizon, where the first rays of dawn were beginning to emerge. "We need to find a safe place to regroup and figure out our next move."
Ricky nodded, his expression serious. "Right. We can't afford to let our guard down. Who knows what other dangers lurk out there."
They walked side by side through the desolate streets, the remnants of a once bustling city. Buildings stood like skeletons, their windows shattered and their walls crumbling. The air was thick with the lingering scent of destruction and despair. It was a constant reminder of the world they now inhabited—a world where survival was the only thing that mattered.
As they made their way through the debris, Tinashe couldn't help but think back to the time before. Before the world had fallen into chaos. Before everything and everyone she knew had been torn apart. She clutched the gun in her hands a little tighter, her knuckles turning white.
A sudden noise broke her train of thought, causing her to stop in her tracks. Ricky followed suit, his grip on his own weapon tightening. Tinashe strained her ears and soon identified the sound—a faint cry for help coming from a nearby alley.
Without a second thought, she took off towards the sound, her feet pounding against the pavement. Ricky chased after her, their footsteps echoing in the empty streets. They rounded a corner and came face to face with a scene that twisted Tinashe's gut with sorrow.
A young girl, no more than twelve or thirteen, huddled in a corner, tears streaming down her face. She was dirty and disheveled, her clothes torn and stained with dirt. It was clear she had been on her own for some time.
Tinashe knelt down beside her, gentleness in her eyes. "Hey there," she said softly, reaching out a hand. "It's going to be okay. We're here to help."
The girl looked up, fear still etched across her face. But as she took in Tinashe's reassuring smile and Ricky's friendly presence behind her, a glimmer of hope flickered in her eyes.
"Please," the girl whispered, her voice barely audible. "They took my family. I don't know where they are."
Tinashe glanced at Ricky, a silent understanding passing between them. This was what they fought for—to protect the innocent, to give them a chance in this harsh new world. Determination surged through her veins as she stood up, her gaze focused on the horizon.
"Then we'll find them," she said firmly. "No matter what it takes." And with that, Tinashe led the way, her heart filled with a flicker of hope, as they embarked on a new mission—to reunite a broken family and build a future amidst the ruins.
