Her eyes melted with fear and curiosity, like the first time we met. I know that she has never forgotten me.

“I don’t want to remember those times,” she said. “I don’t want to feel bad again…”

Her voice was so soft that no one could hear her. Elena tried to say something else, but then she lost strength. She fell into my arms without trying to resist anymore.

Mlodie pulled her head back, shocked and disgusted by this scene of intimacy in their friendship. She looked at us as if there was nothing left to do but to leave us alone.

It was her turn now. Mlodie knew very well that I had liked Elena for a long time, but our relationship had never been more than a friendship. They were always together, Mlodie and Elena, first in high school and years later in college. But I never dared to tell Elena how much I loved her.

Instead, when she asked me for help to escape from her unhappy relationship with Mathieu, I didn’t hesitate for a second. That day was the worst of my life; for the first time in my life I had failed with Elena. Nothing could make up for that mistake, not even the fact that I saved her life from Mathieu’s rage less than two months ago.

It was just a coincidence that brought us all together again here in Needles during this summer season, in front of the most beautiful sunsets on earth: Needles is located at the edge of the Arabian Sea, facing the gorgeous Western Ghats mountain range. It is an ideal place for tourists who want to enjoy extraordinary sunsets while exploring one of the best preserved natural habitats in India.

Needles used to be a small fishing village until a few decades ago, when tourism started flourishing here thanks to its natural beauty and warm weather almost all year round. However, despite its popularity among tourists - especially European tourists - Needles remained primarily a village of fishermen who live happily ever after in their simple houses surrounded by coconut trees and rice paddies.

“Are you okay?” I asked her softly as she looked at me with anger and sadness reflected in her eyes. We finally had some time alone together after dinner - after a few hours of awkward silence around Mlodie who kept clicking away with her camera every time we talked too much with each other...

“Don’t worry about me! You are fine! How can you be so selfish?” she said in disgust as tears soaked her cheeks again and again...

“Elena, please understand me… It was not my intention to hurt you! Please believe me…”

“I don’t want any favors from you! Just let me go home! I don’t want you near me anymore! Okay?! Leave me alone! Go fuck your faggot friends instead! You are such an asshole! Why am I still talking to you? Fuck you!! Don’t talk to me again!!! Ever!!! And stay away from Mathieu and Mlodie or I will call the police! And you know that they love Mathieu here… They hate Americans!!! And they know what kind of person you are!!! Stay away from them!! Please!!! Don”t pretend that you are good!! You are no better than Mathieu!! Do what you want with your life!! Go fuck yourself!!! Enjoy your little vacations until next summer!!! Enjoy fucking your faggot friends while they are still alive!!!! Fuck off!!! Asshole!!! Asshole!!! Asshole!!! Asshole!!! Asshole!!! Asshole!! Go ahead!! Fuck off!!!! Fuck off!!!! Fuck off!!!! Fuck off!!!! Fuck off!!!! Fuck off!!!! Fuck off!!!! Fuck off!!!! Fuck off!!!! Fuck off!!!! FUCK OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Elena screamed hysterically with tears streaming down her face non-stop...

I stood there frozen, my heart pounding heavily in my chest. Each word that escaped Elena's lips felt like a dagger to my soul. I had never seen her so filled with rage and pain before. It was as if all the hurt she had been carrying within herself had finally burst open, flooding the air with a torrent of emotions.

For a moment, I tried to gather my thoughts, to find the right words to calm her down, to explain myself. But her words echoed through my mind, echoing louder and louder until they consumed my every sense. I had failed her, failed to protect her from the pain that Mathieu had inflicted on her. And now, I had failed to be the person she needed me to be.

Tears welled up in my own eyes as I watched her crumble before me. It was true, I had come to India to escape, to find solace in the beauty that surrounded me. But in my selfishness, I had unintentionally brought all the darkness of our past back into her life. I had shattered the fragile peace she had managed to create for herself.

With a heavy sigh, I took a step towards Elena, cautious not to invade her space any further. "Elena, I'm so sorry," I said, my voice barely more than a whisper. "I never wanted this. I never wanted to hurt you."

Her gaze flickered with a mix of disbelief and pain. "You don't understand," she choked out, her voice trembling. "I thought... I thought I could forget. I thought I could leave it all behind."

My heart ached as I saw the weight of her past pressing down on her shoulders. The scars ran deep, etched into every fiber of her being. "I messed up, Elena," I admitted, my voice thick with remorse. "I should have known. I should have understood that coming here would stir up all those memories. But I want you to know that I never stopped caring about you. I never stopped loving you."

Elena's eyes searched mine, her expression filled with a mixture of anger, hurt, and longing. "Love isn't enough," she whispered, her voice barely audible.

I reached out, wanting so desperately to brush away the tears that stained her cheeks. But she flinched away, a silent wall rising between us. It was then that I realized the damage I had caused, the pain I had unknowingly inflicted.

As she turned to walk away, I called out to her, my voice breaking. "Elena, please... just give me a chance to make things right. I'll do whatever it takes."

She paused, her body tense, as if battling an internal war. Finally, she turned back to face me, her eyes filled with a mixture of hesitation and vulnerability. "I don't know if I can," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Please," I pleaded, my voice filled with raw desperation. "Let me show you. Let me prove to you that I've changed, that I'll be there for you, no matter what."

For a moment, silence hung heavy in the air as we stood there, two broken souls searching for a glimmer of hope in the chaos that surrounded us. And then, Elena took a hesitant step towards me, her hand trembling slightly as she reached out.

"Okay," she whispered, her voice laced with a mix of fear and longing. "But this is your last chance. Don't let me down."

A surge of hope coursed through me as I nodded, my heart brimming with determination. I knew that the road to rebuilding our friendship would not be easy, that there would be moments of doubt and pain. But I was willing to face it all, to prove to Elena that I was not the person she believed me to be.

As we walked away together, the sun began to set on the horizon, casting a warm golden glow over the vast expanse of the Arabian Sea. And as the brilliant hues of orange and pink painted the sky, I couldn't help but believe that maybe, just maybe, there was a chance for us to heal, to find solace in the beauty that surrounded us once more.
