It was the sound of a cicada that woke me up. It was the summer after my mother died, but I could still hear her voice in the nectar of flowers. My father had told me there was only one flower she loved and it was the yellow mauve. The honey flower. We weren't allowed to call them honey flowers when she was alive, they were called something else.
The mauve flowers were everywhere.
I got up and walked outside, heading straight for my favourite tree in the garden. I ran my fingers over its rough bark and then sat myself down on the grass beneath to watch the sun rise.
My favourite spot.
The house was quiet, so quiet that if you listened hard enough you could hear your own thoughts. The birds were singing their songs, and there were some other noises that I couldn't quite place - probably from the forest just beyond our property line.
A cool breeze blew across my face as I looked up at the sky as it changed from black to purple to pink. And then suddenly I saw something strange in the sky. A bright light shone through a white cloud, so bright it lit up the morning sky like you'd never seen before. It danced around and shifted colours - red and green and blue, even a colour I didn't know existed - until it faded away just as fast as it appeared.
It must have been a shooting star!
I'd never seen one before! I jumped up out of my seated position and clapped my hands together in excitement. "Mum!" I yelled to no one in particular, "Did you see that?"
No response came back to me aside from an echoing silence. I let out a sigh and sat back down again under my tree, watching as the first rays of sunlight began to break over the horizon line. But then just as it had happened before, another light appeared above me this time, far more intense than the last one had been! Not a shooting star this time however - this one moved towards me slowly, stopping just above my head where two people appeared from thin air onto an invisible platform with four light grey legs sticking out into thin air above them apparently holding them up in space without any visible means of support or connection between them or anything else for that matter!
They both wore long flowing cloaks with hoods covering their faces, but something about them seemed familiar...
One of them spoke to me in a voice that sounded familiar too: "Greetings Lelani."
"Lelani?" I asked aloud whilst simultaneously thinking Who knows my name? And why are they calling me something other than Lea? "Who are you?"
"We shall reveal ourselves shortly," answered another voice I recognised instantly as belonging to 'him' standing beside his companion who had spoken first. "But first we have much to discuss."
