Time Travelling Aliens in 2016 China

As they embark on a humorously surreal journey to return to their own time, they must come to grips with the ironies of fate in a world they never expected.
It was early morning, the sun was rising and the world was waking up.
We stopped in a clearing to rest, drink some water and eat our rations. I took off my backpack, sat down and leaned against a tree. The rest followed and sat down around me at a respectable distance. Some looked at me, others looked at each other. We were all a little nervous but we didn't look as tense as we had before - when we had first arrived here; it hadn't been easy.
As I ate my rations, I thought back to how we got there.

"I've got some bad news."
Professor Hopkins stood in front of us, addressing the class of 22nd century students who were sitting on the floor looking up at him. It was the usual cramped conditions in the lecture hall, but everyone was paying attention because this wasn't something that was common.
"The timeline has changed." He continued. "It's not that it's different from what it should be, but it's definitely changed. The problem is that we don't know by how much or where, so now we're going to have to go back to 2016 and find out what happened." He paused for a moment and looked around the room at all of us before continuing: "That means you'll have to stay here until we get back." He gestured with his hand toward the exit door behind him saying: "You can leave through there if you want." This caught everyone by surprise and many started looking around at each other before turning their heads to look at him again - the looks on their faces told me that they had no idea what he was talking about. "There are still some things you need to know," he said after another pause. "First of all: do not use any technology or anything else that might resemble technology and most importantly: do not interact with anyone or anything unless absolutely necessary! If you're asked a question or confronted just say that you come from another time without explaining why and then continue on your way." He waited for us to digest this bit of information and then continued: "If someone tries to talk to you more than once - do your best to avoid them and if they insist, warn them away with force." And then he added with an empathic smile: "I'm sorry!"; he knew how much people wanted to learn about the past.
