Maia's Brave Stand
·
Published 5/25/2023Against the odds, Maia, a determined and courageous Maori woman embarks on a quest to protect her tribe from marauders by utilizing her newly acquired knowledge of the land -- but will her novice warrior skills be enough to protect her people?

It had been three weeks since the last raid, and we were all beginning to relax. The new tribal meeting hall was almost complete, with the roof thatching complete and a majority of the interior floors done. The food stores were beginning to fill back up nicely, and many of us had more meat than we knew what to do with. I always left the large cuts of meat on sticks by the fire pit outside my hut, just in case any stray travelers came asking.
Life was good.
But then it happened. I was out hunting one day when I saw them come into sight over a hill ridge. There was a large group of men traveling together, a few dozen at least. They were clothed differently than most of our neighboring tribes, wearing brown leather armor with metal plates strapped to their chests and torsos. Their heads were covered with metal helmets with long purple plumes fluttering behind them like flags on the wind. They carried long spears that they used to guide their horses with as they rode down from the hills towards our village.
I dropped my weapon and began running back towards my village, yelling at the top of my lungs for everyone to run for their lives! My tribesmen were confused as I began sprinting past them; some started to run after me while others stood rooted in place trying to figure out what was happening. I continued shouting at the top of my lungs until I made it back to my hut, where I grabbed a small dagger and bow and quiver that were hidden behind my bedding before hurrying off again towards the village center.
I arrived just in time to see the horsemen launching their first volley of spears through the air towards our unprepared tribesmen. Several men fell dead or wounded without ever having had a chance to raise their own weapons in defense. The horsemen rode around the main part of town in circles, each time releasing another volley before galloping away into the hills and disappearing from view. As they left, they let out loud cries in their strange language which echoed throughout our hills like thunder claps answered by distant rumbles of lightning strikes somewhere far away.
The surviving tribal members gathered up quickly despite their confusion and fear; they knew enough not to linger around an enemy attack too long if you wanted to live another day. We retreated into my clan’s hut for protection within its hardened walls made of wood and stone, barricading ourselves inside before picking up our weapons again and waiting for whatever might happen next from within our safety.
After several hours had passed, one brave warrior named Naia stepped out of our hiding space and approached one of the windows that faced out onto our village square so that he could peek outside without being easily seen by anyone watching us from outside who might see him looking out of it. He quickly turned back towards us when he saw something moving near one of the other huts - several heavily armored horsemen with horns strapped atop their helmets had dismounted from their horses and were now walking cautiously towards us. They carried wicked-looking bladed weapons in both hands which glinted silver-white in the light, each weapon adorned with four separate razor-sharp blades on its tip.
As the warriors drew nearer, several members of our tribe prepared to launch a surprise attack. Suina pushed open one wall of our protection just enough so that he could unleash an arrow straight through it into one warrior's forehead. Ngaro immediately followed up on this distraction by pulling me backward through another wall opening so that we could attack them from behind.
Hinekiri joined our offensive efforts, releasing her own arrow at an unsuspecting attacker's chest. Her look urged me to spring into action as well, leaving the safety of our hiding spot to engage in the battle unfolding before us.
Our fellow tribesman Paniniu leapt from concealment, sword held high, and screamed the battle cry "Tuhuna," meaning "warrior." His courageous and unexpected display startled several nearby enemy warriors, causing them to swing wildly in surprise. Seizing the opportunity, Ruaiai dodged their attacks and moved forward to assist Paniniu.
Together, we caught our enemies off guard, faced our fears and fought with great strength and passion, determined to protect our village from this new threat that had come to our shores. Our cries of victory echoed throughout, defying the thunderous war calls that had descended upon us just hours before.
