Faithful Beginnings
·
Published 11/30/2023Cameron stood in front of the pet shop window, his breath fogging up the glass as he peered inside. Puppies of all shapes and sizes tumbled over one another, their tails wagging furiously. But there was one puppy who sat alone in the corner, watching the others with sad eyes.
"Mom," Cameron said, tugging on his mother's sleeve. "Look at that puppy. He's all by himself."
His mother followed Cameron's gaze to the corner of the window where the small, brown puppy sat. "Oh, honey," she said sympathetically. "He has a weak leg. That's why no one has bought him yet."
Cameron's heart sank as he watched the other puppies playfully pounce on each other. The brown puppy tried to join in, but his weak leg caused him to stumble and fall.
"I wish I could help him," Cameron said softly.
His mother smiled and kneeled down beside him. "Sometimes all it takes is a little faith," she said.
Cameron nodded thoughtfully and pressed his hand against the glass, offering a silent prayer for the lonely puppy.
Days turned into weeks, and still, no one had bought the brown puppy with the weak leg. Each time Cameron walked past the pet shop on his way home from school, he would stop and check on him.
"You can do it," he encouraged through the window as he watched the puppy try to jump onto a cushion in his enclosure.
One evening, as Cameron was doing his homework at the kitchen table, he heard his mother talking on the phone in hushed tones.
"Yes...of course...we'll be there tomorrow," she said before hanging up.
Curiosity got the better of Cameron. "Who was that?" he asked.
"It was Mrs. Jenkins from the pet shop," his mother replied with a smile. "She says someone is finally interested in buying the brown puppy. She wants us to come and meet them tomorrow."
Cameron's heart leaped with excitement. "Do you think they'll take him home?" he asked eagerly.
His mother nodded. "I have a feeling they will," she said.
The next day, Cameron and his mother walked into the pet shop to find Mrs. Jenkins talking to a couple in front of the brown puppy's enclosure.
"This is Faith," Mrs. Jenkins said, gesturing to the puppy. "He may have a weak leg, but he's full of love and spirit."
Cameron watched as the couple knelt down to stroke Faith's soft fur. They smiled at one another before turning to Mrs. Jenkins.
"We'll take him," the man said.
Cameron felt his heart swell with joy as he watched Faith wag his tail excitedly.
As Cameron and his mother left the pet shop, Cameron couldn't help but ask, "Why did they name him Faith?"
His mother smiled and squeezed his hand. "Because sometimes all it takes is a little faith for miracles to happen," she said.
Over the following weeks, Cameron watched as Faith grew stronger and more confident with each passing day. His weak leg no longer held him back as he ran and played with boundless energy.
"He's like a completely different puppy," Cameron marveled one evening as he played fetch with Faith in their backyard.
Faith dropped the ball at Cameron's feet and barked happily before bounding after it again.
"He certainly is," his mother agreed, watching from the porch swing.
Cameron picked up the ball and tossed it once more, watching as Faith chased after it with determination in his eyes.
"You know," Cameron said thoughtfully, "I think I understand now why they named him Faith."
"Why is that?" his mother asked, curious to hear his answer.
"Because even when things seem impossible, if you have faith and believe in yourself, anything is possible," Cameron said with a smile.
His mother nodded in agreement. "That's absolutely right, Cameron. Faith can move mountains."
And as they watched Faith leap into the air to catch the ball, his tail wagging furiously, Cameron knew that miracles really could happen when you had a little faith.
