Appalachian Enchantment: Carl's Quest for Legends of the Land.
·
Published 6/14/2023Intrepid internet-savvy college student Carl embarks on a quest to unearth the mysterious folklore hidden in rural Appalachia, where a journey of self discovery reveals a timeless culture and a world he never knew existed.

"Why would you want to move to the middle of nowhere?!" my mother said.
"Mom, I'm twenty-four years old! Who wants to live in the city all their lives?"
My mother was quiet for a moment. "I do." she responded.
"Ugh, whatever." I said as I walked out of the kitchen and into my room. I knew my mom would complain about me moving to a small town in Appalachia, but I didn't expect her to be this upset about it. She knew that I always wanted to explore and learn from other cultures. This was going to be my way of doing that while still having an income. It wasn't like I was just going to move there by myself, either; Carole would be right behind me after she finished up the semester at our university.
Carole had been my best friend since freshman year. We got along great, and we are always there for each other whenever we need help or advice with anything.
My phone began ringing, so I headed back into the kitchen to answer it. It was Carole again. "Hey Carole!" I said as cheerfully as possible, hoping that it would cheer up my mother a bit. "We're getting on the road in about an hour! How much longer before you're ready?"
"I think about another hour or two." Carole replied. "I'm just trying to get everything done here before I leave, and everyone else is being really slow today."
"Well try your best to hurry up! This place sounds awesome, and I hope to meet everyone who lives here soon!" My enthusiasm must have changed her mind, because she agreed with me and told me she'd see me soon. As we hung up the phone, another call came in from an unknown number.
"Hello?" I asked as cheerfully as possible again. "Is this the number for the Appalachian Folk Tales organization?" A woman's voice on the other end responded that it was indeed their number, so I explained how they called me and asked if they had any job positions open. The woman on the other end informed me that they did indeed have jobs opening up soon, but they weren't accepting applications until a few days later due to having some things they had to sort out first. All qualified people could apply then, though, and she would be happy to provide whatever information she could until then. We ended up talking for about thirty minutes about the Appalachian culture before finally hanging up the phone again; Carole should be arriving within a couple of hours now, so hopefully we can both get some rest before we head out there this afternoon.
