Clash of Champions: A Love-Unexpected

There were two types of people in the world. The first, those who are so focused on winning that they stop enjoying the game, and the second, those who are so focused on enjoying the game that they don't pay attention to the scoreboard. I was neither of these types of people.

I enjoyed the game, I really did. It was fun to play at first, but then it became addicting. I started playing every day, long into the night, and longer still when I had a break from school. Even when I didn't have classes and could stay up as late as I wanted, I would wake up in the morning and there I would be on my laptop again. Then one day, after not having slept for three days, I woke up passed out with my laptop still on, a piece of paper with a few notes written on it next to me, and no recollection of writing them down.

My English teacher called me into her room one day to tell me she'd been reading over my last essay she gave me and noticed something strange. She pulled out a piece of paper from her desk drawer which contained what seemed to be my essay copied onto it word for word and handed it to me. "Do you know where this came from?" she asked.

"No," I said. "I don't know what you're talking about."

She stared at me for a moment before turning around and walking back over to her desk. As soon as she sat down, she began typing away on her computer again like nothing ever happened. "Well then," she said. "You can go back to class now."

The following week there was an announcement over the loudspeaker asking students who had time during their lunch break to attend a special assembly in front of the cafeteria tomorrow afternoon during their free period. Apparently today's lesson was being canceled because all teachers were being called into a meeting at another school building nearby before lunch, but that we should all be prepared to meet in our designated classrooms right after lunch instead with our homework done as usual.

This made sense to me because it sounded exactly like how teacher meetings usually went at my school; they were always held during lunch or right after school was getting out because it's easier to get people together when everyone is leaving at the same time rather than trying to find times when everyone is available individually at separate times during the week. That meant we'd all finish early enough to eat lunch and get back before classes got out anyway so we wouldn't lose any time learning anything useful for class later in the week where we'd actually need it for something other than just passing a test or forgetting about it entirely until next time we needed it again.
